Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Luke

Acts 1:5 ESV

5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Acts 1:8 ESV

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Jesus says Holy Spirit is coming and will accompany power.

Acts 2:1–4 ESV

1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 10:44–46 ESV

44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. 45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,

The term tongues appears three times in Acts

Acts 19:1–6 ESV

1 And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus. There he found some disciples. 2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?” They said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.

Acts 19:1

Tongues does not occur in but it probably occured because of the wording “people saw that they had to the Holy Spirit.

Four events

No where in N/T is it taught that Baptism in the Holy Spirit results in the speaking in tongues.

Jesus teaches in you will receive the Spirit and in Jesus says you will receive POWER. Power us the biblical sign

Could be special circumstances surrounded the 4 events involving speaking tongues.

Paul says “not all speak in tongues.” The same language used in Acts is the same here in Corinthians.

From Lukes writings it is clear a Christian without power has not received the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Moderate Pentecostal stress of the experience of receiving the Holy Spirit is correct. YOU KNOW when you receive the HS.

The term baptism in the HS implies immersion in the life of the Spirit. JTB said I baptize with, the one coming after me will baptize you with the Spirit and Fire. (Matt 3)

1 Corinthians 12 ESV

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills. 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? 1 Cor 12:13

1 Corinthians 12:13 ESV

13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

People would argue that Paul is teaching here we have been baptized in the HS when we were saved.

Evangelicals have been wrong to limit Paul’s understanding of the baptism of the HS to this initial subconscience act of conversion.

We cannot limit our understanding of Acts bc of the verse in :13.

In Acts the baptism of the HS is a conscience experience of power.

3. Never in the books of Acts is the HS a subconscience influence. It is a experience.

4. The reason we should stress the experience the Baptism of the Spirit is bc the apostles teach in Acts it is consequent upon and subsequent to faith.
