Thyatira (thi-a-tear-a)

This is the longest of the seven letters, and is written to the church in the smallest town. They had little political or religious significance, there was little thret of persecution, but there was a temptation of social exceptence Thyatira was a manufacturing center Known for its cloth indestery Weaving, dyeing, and sewing were the major sources of income

It was a defencless city it had no natural fortress and was generally under the military protection of pergamum s=30 miles to the east the city was conqured by Rome in 190 B>C.

18 And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine brass; 19 I know thy works, and charity, and service, and faith, and thy patience, and thy works; and the last to be more than the first. 20 Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols. 21 And I gave her space to repent of her fornication; and she repented not. 22 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. 24 But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden. 25 But that which ye have already hold fast till I come. 26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: 27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

To the one who conquers I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name written on the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it.’ 18 “And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write: ‘The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like a flame of fire, and whose feet are like burnished bronze. 19 “ ‘I know your works, your love and faith and service and patient endurance, and that your latter works exceed the first. 20 But I have this against you, that you tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and is teaching and seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 21 I gave her time to repent, but she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality. 22 Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her I will throw into great tribulation, unless they repent of her works, 23 and I will strike her children dead. And all the churches will know that I am he who searches mind and heart, and I will give to each of you according to your works. 24 But to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who have not learned what some call the deep things of Satan, to you I say, I do not lay on you any other burden. 25 Only hold fast what you have until I come. 26 The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end, to him I will give authority over the nations, 27 and he will rule them with a rod of iron, as when earthen pots are broken in pieces, even as I myself have received authority from my Father. 28 And I will give him the morning star. 29 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

Christ begins by praising them for what they are doing right.

A powerful woman who is called Jezebel symbolicly had such a great influence within the church that she encourged the Believers to participate in the guild festivals theese festivals involved comitting fornication and eating things sacrificed to idols.

Not only did the Christians lack zeal for Godly discipline and correct doctorine, they also obliged those who erred in theese ways and condoned there errors.

Just as the Old testement Jezebel, the pagan wife of king Ahab, led the Israelites astray, so this new testement Jezebel was doing the same. Her compomise with the socially acceptable imorality. of the times is described by the savior as plunging into the deep things of satin.

They wanted to tolerate sin in the name of cultural accommodation

The bottom line of our Lords appeal to believers at Thyatira was ethical as well as doctrinal. He criticizes there practice more than their doctrine.

It may well have been that false prophetess was more than encouraging and tolerating secret sin rather than promoting it publicly . Thus, the Lord reminds them that He has eyes like a flasme of fire which penetrate the human heart and reveal its secret desires.

Christ thretens to cast this immoral woman into bed of great tribulation the cll to repentance was issued and there was still time to repent, but the door of divine opportunity was about to close.

Christ ends with a message to the true believers who have not been led astray by false teaching

He blesses them for not falling prey to false teaching

He exhorts them to hold onto what they have until he comes

He again ends with “He who has an ear let him hear “listen to what I say and follow it
