Stress Vs. Rest
Stress Vs. Rest
Jesus began to beside the sea in Capernaum
Jesus taught all day until sundown
Mark 4:35
On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.”
(You’re Not The Only Boat On The Sea)
Mark 4:36
And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.
The disciples took Jesus in the boat
And other boats were following Jesus to the other side.
Mark 4:
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep.
Mark called it a windstorm! Matthew said it was a great storm.
Mark said that the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
Matthew said that the boat was being swamped by the waves.
I like how Matthew puts it - SWAMPED
Have you ever felt swamped by storms of life?
Other boats were following Jesus - News Flash you are not the only one feeling swamped.
(Does Jesus Care?)
But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
A great windstorm and Jesus is in the stern (Back of the boat) SLEEP. Not only that has a pillow…
“And they woke him and said to him,” - “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
Our Thought process has 4 Functions
Perception
Association
Evaluation
Decision Making
The disciples perception:
I see and hear - wind, waves, water, a boat, other men panicking and someone sleeping…
I feel - water, other men moving around....
Association:
Wind - Waves - Water is not a good combination. Fear of drowning - A fear of the boat capsizing.
A fear of past experiences + their current perception began to become their reality.
Storms then came become paralysis - a state of powerlessness or incapacity to act
or it can cause cynicism of my mind! Where we begin to doubt other people. Cynicism has a hard edge of suspicion.
Evaluation:
My Storm Vs. Jesus Sleep
Decision making:
This was the decision “And they woke him and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
Have you ever felt this way.
And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
Your storm will cause you to make decision to ask a serious question. “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”
Jesus do you care?
Storms can keep you in a CYCLE of stress!
(“And He Awoke”)
And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Mark 4:
He rebuked (he ordered the wind to stop) - He said to the sea, (New Testament Commentary: Hush)
Blight, R. C. (2012). An Exegetical Summary of (p. 230). Dallas, TX: SIL International.
There was a great calm!!!
He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?”
Jesus speaks to three areas:
The wind
The Sea
The disciples
Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith? - Fear and Stress does not equal Faith!
(How to break the CYCLE of Stress)
And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
#1 It’s Through Identification
The Disciples - “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
Stress produced by perception can be connected to identification - My perception of who Jesus is critical…
You have to know who’s in your boat on the sea called life.
#2 Breaking the Cycle of Stress
Is not always with a prayer but a pillow
Could it be that we pray about stuff that the creator aready knows about it!!!
3# Faith has a position
(Sleep)
Break the Cycle of Stress by taking your position of faith.
