Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
Jesus was letting the people know that John was the ones that was prophesied about in Mal. 3:1

Jesus goes on to say some very important words to us that are repeated several more times and that is “he who has an ear let him hear!”
But some refuse to listen as if they are like little children wanting to draw attention to themselves by acting out or up, look at me, look at me, pay attention to me!
Matthew 11:16–19 ESV
“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates, “ ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’ For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”
Matthew 11:16-19
Vs 16-19 Talks about the attitude of the people who were there and if they were or were not paying attention
Jesus addresses the heart and attitude of those around them both John the Baptist and Jesus Himself
Matthew 11:16
Matthew 11:16–17 ESV
“But to what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to their playmates, “ ‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn.’
They were as one writer put it they were fickle or caustic!
caustic it means that they were sarcastic, bitter, scornful, as to burn or carried at the organic tissue or fiber, they were destroying or eating away at Jesus comments
Caustic it means that they were sarcastic, bitter, scornful, as to burn or carried at the organic tissue or fiber, they were destroying or eating away at Jesus comments
How do we listen, are we acting upon the words that we hear or do we just let it in one ear and out the other? Or are we trying to draw attention to ourselves?
Matthew 11:18–19 ESV
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.’ The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is justified by her deeds.”
Matthew 11:18-19
These verses are what they were saying about Jesus and John they were demons, gluttons, winebibbers, and friends to all kinds of sinners
It is not a matter of how well the message is prepared or presented, it is about the heart of the person and if they are respective to the heart and words of Christ
If you are hard hearted and non-responsive to the call of Christ then you will be shut down until you change
But if your heart is open and receptive then you will hear the heart of Jesus and be drawn to change by the Holy Spirit
