Fruit of the Holy Spirit

Galatians 5:22–23 NIV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
a list of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit = his personality
Galatians 5:21–22 NIV
and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Holy Spirit is a perfect reflection of Jesus Christ
read the gospel accounts and we see all these characteristics in Jesus
become a follower of Jesus and we receive the Holy Spirit
Acts 2:38 NIV
Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
one advantage is a new spirit and a new position - legally we are citizens of heaven
no paperwork to fill out, no entrance fee to pay, no ongoing criteria of moral achievements
once we confess Jesus we are in the kingdom
Second Advantage
we get the personality of Jesus
all of these characteristics are now manifesting in our daily walk
get one get them all - no excuses for denying any one of them e.g. patience or self control
we have got them all and we need to engage and energise them in our daily walk
Love Joy Peace
these three are the foundations for all these characteristics
love drives everything we do
Romans 5:2 NIV
through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.
Romans 5:8 NIV
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
the whole purpose and work of God is fundamentally love
without love all things are just vain endeaavours
without love - I am a noisy gong
without love - I am nothing
without love - I gain nothing
1 Corinthians 13:6–7 NIV
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1 Corinthians 13:
Joy and Peace
love is foundational - it is at the heart of the kingdom of God
the difference between joy and peace is one of direction within one’s being
peace is the inner quality that is over spirit, mind and soul
joy is the outward quality that peace emanates
we are known as Christians by our love, yet
joy and peace go hand in hand with that love
Radical Christianity
I will contend that it is not love that makes us truly radical
it is the incredible joy that is displayed in any circumstance
Philippians 4:6 NIV
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:5–6 NIV
Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
Philippians 4:4–6 NIV
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
we are commanded to rejoice
rejoice comes through godly inspired prayer
we rejoice in the everyday events of our life
it may be terrible as the world sees it or it could be triumphant
divine rejoicing is firmly rooted in the hope of eternal life in Christ jesus
Peace FLows
Philippians 4:7 NIV
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
joy actually enhances the flow of peace
want peace in your life - express joy
Expressed Joy
2 Corinthians 4:15–18 NIV
All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
our joy is for the glory of God - it is something external of us , it is not a ME ME ME moment
light and momentary troubles are in the world
eternal glory is in the heavenlies and we are in the heavenlies
