Witness
In this text Paul is writing to Timothy who is a leader and a teacher in the church.
This however, does not mean that this word is only for Timothy.
In the Gospels we see this command given in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Other Accounts of Commissions
Mark 16
Luke 24:45-
Luke states 2 things that Matthew and Mark do not.
Repentance for the forgiveness of sins and witness.
These are the 2 things that Paul leaves with Timothy.
What —>
the word - The Gospel, the Good News, the story of Jesus Christ and the reason that we can have hope and a future because Christ died we can fully live.
When—> “in season and out of season” ALWAYS
How —>
—> reprove —> convict—> people need and want to know the truth—> without the truth about their sin they can’t get better —> Medicine is a great analogy for spiritual conviction, when you have surgery to get better there is always a little bit of pain, a cut in the skin, a repositioning of muscles, a rebreaking of bones, getting better hurts, but its better for us in the long run.
That takes us to rebuke.
—> rebuke—> However, just like you wouldn’t want your doctor making a cut 6 inches long when one 2 inches will do, be careful when pointing out to others where they have fallen short.
This conviction is must successful in the midst of relationship.
God helps with this process.
God can give opportunities and open doors.
God can make relationships grow faster to allow people to be ready.
Sometimes God just puts people in each others paths that are complete strangers so that one can help the other to see who God is.
—> exhort—> Unlike modern medicine we can always leave each other with hope.
There are no terminal diagnosis here because Jesus Christ has conquered the grave, he has set the captive, free and he has given fresh hope and new life to all those that hear the Good News and call upon His name as Lord and Savior.
When we rebuke and convict our brothers and sisters of their sin we do so with our sin in mind.
Knowing we all need grace and we all count on the love of Christ to pull us through.
I leave you and finish our Stewardship/Membership Series with this...
