The Power of Change
INTRODUCTION
Different- windows verses Mac. They have learned to play nice. Microsoft Office on Mac. But a Mac does not become a Windows machine.
Bryan- had windows loaded on his Mac. It was slow and not worth it. It can’t pretend to be something it is not.
Oil and water are different because water has polar molecules and oil is non-polar. They cannot stick together. Water can only mix with other polar molecules and oil can only mix with non-polar molecules unless you use an emulsifier (like soap).
Jesus doesn’t emulsify us to stick to him. He changes us to be like him.
READ
“I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
PRAY
4 Ways We are Different than the World
Understanding (25)
Understanding (25)
25- “the hour”= when the Holy Spirit comes.
human capacity to understand truth.
This changes with coming of the Holy Spirit-
This gives us a different world view because we see the world differently.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. 24 Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25 because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.

See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.

One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”
He answered, “Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see.”
Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

Figuratively= a way for Jesus to communicate to humans the reality of God and salvation.
They understand later because Holy Spirit changes the way they see the world.
Relating (26-28)
Relating (26-28)
How we relate to God.
26- "in my name" - Jesus does not ask on our behalf- we have direct access because of what he did for us on the cross.
Mediator in a little different sense. He mediated the relationship and does not have to continue to keep our relationship together. It was once for all.
ILL- Not like having to go through an operator. We can call directly because of the relationship with have with the phone company.
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
27-
Phileo love (not agape)
God's love for us goes beyond his love for us- He loves the world
God does not move to love us because of our love. God and Jesus are the prime movers in our relationship, and we respond to the movements of God.
God hears our prayers because of his prior moving to send Jesus. He initiated it.
We love because he first loved us.
We love because he first loved us.
"believed"=
28- Jesus' relationship with Father provides our relationship with the Father.
Jesus came from the Father as the Spirit proceeds from the father ()
This verse is the Gospel-- He came, He lived, He died, He Ascended.
The Gospel is what changes the relationship.
Not what we have done. It’s what Jesus has done.
Failing (29-31)
Failing (29-31)
Pride/arrogance
Jesus was talking about the coming of the Holy Spirit and they don’t want to admit that they still don’t understand.
We fail differently because of grace.
Christians are not perfect, we are just forgiven.
He continues to use us.
Overcoming (32-33)
Overcoming (32-33)
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
Jesus is only way to overcome the world.
CONCLUSION
Have you been changed by Jesus?
