A Joyful Mission

ME:

the previous chapter: Jesus taught His disciples about Him being the vine and that, as branches, we need to abide in Him in order to bear fruit.

He taught on this to communicate His love for us before revealing that the world will hate us.

But He ended with an encouragement, that the Spirit will help us in this world.

In chapter 16, Jesus goes into greater detail about how the Holy Spirit will help us when we face persecution in this world.

Jesus communicates to us a mission He has given us

and this mission will fill us with joy

WE: Help for the Mission

16:4b-15 - The ministry of the Holy Spirit

4b-6: our mission is bigger than ourselves

7-15: our mission requires supernatural help

7-11: the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin

the ruler of the world refers to Satan (vs. 11)

12-15: The Holy Spirit guides us into truth

vs. 12, “you don’t understand now”

vs. 13, “but the Holy Spirit will teach you.”

“sorrow has filled your heart” = sorrow has filled your thinking (vs. 6) = in your mind will be sorrow

replaced in vs. 22, “your hearts will rejoice” = “joy will fill your heart” = “Joy will fill your thinking” = “in your mind will be joy”

interchangeable with soul

it is the center of our spiritual activity and all operations of the human life

center of our thoughts, choices, emotions, and conscience

Jesus is leaving for the Helper to come

Disciples are sad, but Jesus says its for our benefit

GOD: Joy from the Mission

16:16-24 - The disciples don’t understand that they won’t see Jesus in a little while but then will see him after a little while

Jesus tells the disciples they will be sad, then they will rejoice like a woman giving birth

This joy can never be taken from them

The joy comes from the reality of His resurrection

“your heart shall rejoice” (Isaiah 66:14)

To ask in Jesus’ name isn’t simply saying “In Jesus’ name”

it is asking using Jesus’ authority

when we ask in Jesus’ name, we are asking in Jesus’ authority

The disciples weren’t asking with the authority of Jesus yet because Jesus hadn’t taken their sins and replaced it with His righteousness on the cross yet (vs. 24)

YOU: Success of the Mission

16:25-33 - Jesus came from the Father

God loves us

Jesus has overcome the world

The disciples get it now

We will face tribulation but we will have peace and joy to overcome the tribulation because Jesus has overcome the world

We have overcome the world by faith in Christ, victory (, 4:4)

we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37)

Jesus commands us in vs. 33, to take heart

taking heart is a psychological state

He commands this because He has overcome the world, He has conquered the world, He has accomplished His goal

Regardless of circumstance, disciples find joy in Christ as we live out the gospel and continue Jesus’s mission by spreading His message
