INTRODUCTION:
1. Do you know the God of peace?
Philippians 4:9 NKJV
9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
A. God desires peace for His children.
Jeremiah 29:11 NKJV
11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
1. Peace is a blessing from God.
Psalm 29:11 NKJV
11 The Lord will give strength to His people; The Lord will bless His people with peace.
2. Getting to know God will bring peace to your life.
Isaiah 26:3 NKJV
3 You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.
3. Keeping God’s law will bring great peace.
Psalm 119:165 NKJV
165 Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble.
4. Coming to Christ will bring rest for your soul or peace.
Matthew 11:28–30 NKJV
28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”
A. How do we get to know the God of peace?
BODY:
1. We must pursue the things which make for peace.
Romans 14:19 NKJV
19 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.
A. We pursue the things which make for peace when we sow the fruit of righteousness.
James 3:18 NKJV
18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
1. The fruit of righteousness is the wisdom from above.
James 3:17 NKJV
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.
A. When we pursue God’s wisdom we get to know God through peace.
1. God’s wisdom is first pure.
A. This means there is nothing evil in God’s wisdom.
1 John 1:5 NKJV
5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
B. God’s wisdom is pure or perfect.
Psalm 18:30 NKJV
30 As for God, His way is perfect; The word of the Lord is proven; He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
C. If we listen to God’s wisdom it can make us perfect or pure.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 KJV 1900
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
2. God’s wisdom is peaceable (NIV peace-loving).
A. To be peaceable is to seek peace or to give place to wrath.
Romans 12:19 NKJV
19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.
1. We need to be looking for ways to give place to our wrath because the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
James 1:19–20 NKJV
19 So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; 20 for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God.
2. We do not come to know God through our wrath but by getting to know peace.
3. God’s wisdom is gentle.
Proverbs 15:1 NKJV
1 A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
4. God’s wisdom is willing to yield.
A. We don’t always have to be right.
B. We can yield to keep peace as long as we don’t compromise God’s Word to do so.
Romans 12:18 NKJV
18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men.
5. God’s wisdom is full of mercy and good fruits.
Ephesians 2:4–5 NKJV
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),
A. We get to know the God of peace by showing mercy to others.
Ephesians 4:31–32 NKJV
31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32 And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
1. When we show mercy we allow our wrath to be abated.
James 2:13 NKJV
13 For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
6. God’s wisdom is without partiality.
Romans 2:11 NKJV
11 For there is no partiality with God.
A. Partiality does not bring peace.
1. Partiality to the poor makes them feel unwelcome and makes us judges with evil thoughts.
James 2:1–4 NKJV
1 My brethren, do not hold the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with partiality. 2 For if there should come into your assembly a man with gold rings, in fine apparel, and there should also come in a poor man in filthy clothes, 3 and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say to him, “You sit here in a good place,” and say to the poor man, “You stand there,” or, “Sit here at my footstool,” 4 have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts?
2. Partiality between siblings can make them jealous.
3. Partiality between brothers in Christ brings warring amongst our members.
Galatians 2:11–12 NKJV
11 Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; 12 for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision.
7. God’s wisdom is without hypocrisy.
Matthew 7:1–5 NKJV
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. 3 And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? 5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A. If we are hypocrites we are not pursuing the God of peace.
CONCLUSION:
1. If we will pursue the things which make for peace we will get to know the God of peace.
A. The wisdom from above makes for peace.
1. Are you pursuing it?
2. Do you know the God of peace.
3. Come to Jesus today and you will find the God of Peace.
