The Gospel (Part 1) Two Major Parts
Two Major Parts
1. The divine provision of salvation: a) Man’s condition; b) The implication of man’s condition; c) God’s character; d) A summary statement to pull it together; e) Christ’s death: 1) The dilemma it solves; 2) The solution it brings
2. The human appropriation of salvation: a) God’s condition of salvation; b) Man’s additions
Man’s Condition
• Human viewpoint evaluation
• Divine viewpoint (declaration) evaluation: “All under sin”—Romans 3:9b
The implications of man’s condition
• All under sin—what are the implications of that condition (so what?)
• Genesis 2:16-17—there is an unbreakable link between sin and consequence: 1) If you sin, you are guilty. 2) If guilty, you must die.
• Satan wants that overlooked—Genesis 3:2-4
• What does it mean to be “under death?” Ephesians 2:1-4: 1) You were dead, v. 1; 2) There is hope, vv. 2-3; 3) Now alive, v. 4—God took the initiative to provide salvation
God’s character
• If dead in trespasses and sins, who do we have to deal with?
• God—holy, righteous, and just: 1) Righteous—that which loves right; 2) Justice—that which must punish sin.
• God NEVER acts outside His character
• The dilemma this creates . . .
How can God punish sin as His justice requires and at the same time save the sinner as His love desires?
