Intro: We’re back in 2 Samuel we’ve been following the life of one of the greatest men in all the Bible…A man after the heart of God…King David…now we’re seen the worst of him recently, as a man, as a family, and as a king, but even in our lowest, what God has said about us can not be unsaid…He was God’s anointed king, God’s hand was upon him, and because of that the entire world could have set themselves against him and they would have lost because if God is for us, who can be against us
In Samuel rejecting indictment of Saul…He makes reference of David…look at what he says...
Intro: We’re back in 2 Samuel we’ve been following the life of one of the greatest men in all the Bible…King David…now with that said, we are portion of his life where If David Public Image consultant, they would go to great lengths to bury these records…Because it’s been full of David’s Failure’s as a King, as a Father, and as a Man of God...
14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
Recap: Last week we saw a broken and mourning father who was grieving the loss of his son, we spoke about the appropriateness of grieve but we also spoke about how excessive of inappropriate grief (especially because he was the leader everyone was looking up too) was detrimental to the whole
This testifies to the authenticity of Bible…It is brutally honest honest with it’s Hero’s
But now,
The David’s complicated Nephew and the Captain Joab would be the one to talk David off the ledge...
Abraham struggled to protect his wife
let’s see the recap...
Moses was a killer
8 Then the king arose and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his own home.
2 sam 19:
1 It was told Joab, “Behold, the king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.”
2 So the victory that day was turned into mourning for all the people, for the people heard that day, “The king is grieving for his son.”
3 And the people stole into the city that day as people steal in who are ashamed when they flee in battle.
4 The king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, “O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!”
5 Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, “You have today covered with shame the faces of all your servants, who have this day saved your life and the lives of your sons and your daughters and the lives of your wives and your concubines,
6 because you love those who hate you and hate those who love you. For you have made it clear today that commanders and servants are nothing to you, for today I know that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, then you would be pleased.
7 Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to your servants, for I swear by the Lord, if you do not go, not a man will stay with you this night, and this will be worse for you than all the evil that has come upon you from your youth until now.”
8 Then the king arose and took his seat in the gate. And the people were all told, “Behold, the king is sitting in the gate.” And all the people came before the king. Now Israel had fled every man to his own home.
Jacob played favorites with his kids
So it’s important to understand that even
Isn’t it interesting how God can use the most unexpected people, to bring about the results he wants. Joab wasn’t what we would call “Good” But Joab is an instrument in the hands of a good God…So God used Joab, to help the king get focused and get back to doing, what God had called him to do...
Samuel wasn’t the best dad in the world
So David has resumed his reign amoungst his allies....but this next section is about David resuming his reign amoungst those who rebelled against him
And David pretty much all of those things going on
(Prop) Today we’re gonna see king David reinstitute his reign over this rebellious people…but if there was one word used to describe his way of doing it…It would be the word grace…and today as we see david deal graciously with these people, we should be reminded of how Our king Jesus has dealt graciously with us
Outline:
A humble people v.9-10
A gracious King v.11-14
A point of Action v.15
A humble people v.9-10
A humble people v.9-10
So look at the end of v.8 and you’ll read that “all Israel fled every man to his own home” this means that they put their money on Absalom and he ended up being the wrong bet…so think about who these guys are…they are a people who are at the mercy of a king who they betrayed…a king who was good to them…but now he’s the
9 And all the people were arguing throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, “The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies and saved us from the hand of the Philistines, and now he has fled out of the land from Absalom.
10 But Absalom, whom we anointed over us, is dead in battle. Now therefore why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?”
So there was a debate was a debate raging amoungst the tribes who have followed Absalom and it was pretty much this “We’re reluctant to follow the king that we’ve known and rejected…but the new king that we’ve embraced is dead
And Yet God would use them greatly...
2 sam 19:

And I think that is a pretty good picture of whats happened in the west

Here’s the point: Even these Israelites, who had just finished fighting with David…realized that they were much better off coming back under his authority then leading themselves…and so are you

Jesus lived a sinless life

So they recognize their need for King David which is a good first step…but their the’ve been at war with the king…So how will the king respond?
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
28 “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest.
29 Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
30 Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”
A merciful King v.11-14
A merciful King v.11-14
Now remember, reconciliation is a two way street, we see that the people ( at least most of them) are humble and willing, but is the King?
11 And King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his house, when the word of all Israel has come to the king?
12 You are my brothers; you are my bone and my flesh. Why then should you be the last to bring back the king?’
13 And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if you are not commander of my army from now on in place of Joab.’ ”
14 And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, so that they sent word to the king, “Return, both you and all your servants.”
11 And King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar the priests: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his house, when the word of all Israel has come to the king?
So even though the majority of the people were moving toward submitting to David’s reign, the tribe of Judah was lagging behind…why? because they were the most guilty tribe…Absalom’s rebellion began in Hebron which is Judah’s territory....so in their minds their probably thinking, If He becomes king again, he’s gonna kill us...
2 sam 19:11-

Notice whom the king sent t
Here’s the picture: Their rebellion, gave way to failure, which gave way to shame, which gave way to fear, which gave way to more rebellion…and it starts all over again
Do you know anyone like that? are you like that?
But look at what the king does...
He sands a message via the priest v.11
Think about that he could have said Abishai the killer…or Joab…but he choses the priests…Because he wasn’t coming to destroy he was coming to make peace
App: This makes me think of Jesus…
He identifies himself with them v.12 “You are my flesh and bone”
Illastration: Have you ever been around someone who’s made such a fool of themselves that everyone says “Their not with me”
It would have been easy for David to say - “I’m nothing like you”…but he doesn’t he essentally says…I’m just like you
App: This too is just like Jesus...
Read his genealogy - bad fathers, husbands, prostitutes, outsiders, trainwrecks…and Jesus says “these are my flesh and bone”
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
He doesn’t force his reign
David could have forced his reign upon his enemies though he was certainly capable but he didn’t…he gave them a choice
Jesus will never force himself on any of us…Salvation is a matter of a man or women willingly bowing their hearts to Jesus…people who’s hearts are swayed by Jesus...

Allen Redpath said this...
Allen Redpath said this...
“David didn’t lift a finger to reestablish his authority, His return to sovereignty was decided by the voluntary submission of his kinsmen and their loving obedience to his will”
What a great picture of King Jesus
Then look what else the king does...
13 And say to Amasa, ‘Are you not my bone and my flesh? God do so to me and more also, if you are not commander of my army from now on in place of Joab.’ ”
so here we have 2 things happening...
Notice what he does to Joab
notice that David doesn’t give Joab’s position back to him…Joab was the original commander of David’s army…but now he’s not…I believe this punishment for killing Absalom after He told them not too
Notice what he does for Amasa
(He was the former commander of Absalom’s army 2 sam 17:25)…but instead he gives a premier place in his army
He was the former commander of Absalom’s army 2 sam 17:25)…but instead he gives a premier place in his army
Here’s the picture - He takes someone who is one of the biggest enemies and recruits him into his army as a captain...
This is called Grace…and this is a picture of Jesus deals with us...
I think about all the outspoken opponents of Christianity are now on the frontlines for the gospel

A former tenured english professor at Syracuse university who set her sights on bringing down the religious right...
As a professor of English and women's studies, on the track to becoming a tenured radical, I cared about morality, justice, and compassion. Fervent for the worldviews of Freud, Hegel, Marx, and Darwin, I strove to stand with the disempowered.
In here testimony she said this...As a professor of English and women's studies, on the track to becoming a tenured radical, I cared about morality, justice, and compassion. Fervent for the worldviews of Freud, Hegel, Marx, and Darwin, I strove to stand with the disempowered.

So David has responded so mercifully to Israel…and look at the people’s response...
14 And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, so that they sent word to the king, “Return, both you and all your servants.”
His mercy swayed their hearts…He didn’t force them, He won them...
William Blakey said this...
William Blakey said this...
“Most probably the reason why the men of Judah hung back in summiting to David was because they feared the fact that if David was restored to the throne he would kill them for treason,”
“for it was at Hebron that Absalom was promoted and that was Judah’s territory.”
for it was at Hebron that Absalom was promoted and that was Judah’s territory.”
“But when word began to speared that the leader (Amasa) of the rebel forces was not punished but actually promoted to the office of the King’s highest service, all fears of the sort began to be scattered.”
“It was an act of wonderful clemency, it was not usually the way a king would treat rebels…but this was no common king.
“There was no limit to his generosity, where sin abounded grace dId much more abound. and all of this grace lead them to say “Return now, and claim your throne”
App: This is so how Jesus wins our hearts…It’s his kindness and his love that draws us...
Share my testimony

15 So the king came back to the Jordan, and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and to bring the king over the Jordan.
2 sam 19:
So here’s the picture, David now returns from Exile...
14 And he swayed the heart of all the men of Judah as one man, so that they sent word to the king, “Return, both you and all your servants.”
15 So the king came back to the Jordan, and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and to bring the king over the Jordan.

Notice emotional reaction was couple with a physical response…as the king was moving towards them, they began to move towards the King
“15 So the king came back to the Jordan, and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and to bring the king over the Jordan”
Notice emotional reaction was couple with a physical response…as the king was moving towards them, they began to move towards the King
App: This is so Important to understand, to simply believe that Jesus is king is not enough…you have
“Return, both you and all your servants.”v.14
“Return, both you and all your servants.”v.14
Notice their heart wasn’t for the king, it was for the those who had allegiance to the king as well
Complicated people like Joab
Complicated people like Joab
Angry people like people like Abishai
Foreigners like Ittai
As difficult as some of those people were they were also Essential in God’s plan
App: It can be difficult at times, but a part an essential part of your relationship with the king, will be how you relate to his people
“15 So the king came back to the Jordan, and Judah came to Gilgal to meet the king and to bring the king over the Jordan”
16 And Shimei the son of Gera, the Benjaminite, from Bahurim, hurried to come down with the men of Judah to meet King David.
