v.1-2 It was the will of God for Jesus to be tested.
God does not tempt, He tests
Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.
The test, dokimos means to approve or to welcome
Like when money is weighed out so make sure that it is enough.
Tempt
This is where we are enticed to sin, either by our own desires or the devil.
What we see is that God allows temptation to come upon us. Knowing that it will produce godliness.

If you really are the son of God, break the fast that you are undergoing right now.
Jesus quoting Deuteronomy shows that this comes back to Israel, where Israel failed to follow God, Jesus would succeed.
And you shall remember the whole way that the Lord your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.
Just like God tested Israel, now Jesus is being tested.
And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
God was teaching them to rely on Him, not on their own skill, or on their own ways. That He was the provider.
And Moses said to them, “Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.” But they did not listen to Moses. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them.
God tested them by saying will you believe in me for your provision, they didn’t. They wanted to keep as much as they could believing that the food that they could collect would sustain them and not the power of God.
The test is to believe in the provision of God.
Do we trust God?

Do we trust Him with our future, or is He just a religious act that we follow on Sunday morning?
Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Do you believe that or is it just a nice saying that is in the bible!?!?
If you believe it you can relax which is why Paul writes in
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
Israel was asked will you trust me to give you food, Jesus believed it was more important to seek God and God would provide when He needed it, now you asked will you trust God to provide for you.

Satan thought he knew what Jesus wanted, power. The promise had been given to Jesus long ago for in

Satan was telling Jesus that he could expedite the process.

The place that Israel had once again failed. To serve God alone. They thought that they could get power, wealth, prestige from other god’s such as Baal.
Do we bow down to idols?

Make work an idol, you believe that all of your focus needs to be on your carrier so you can get ahead. You think you’ll be happier with more money or power.
If you would work for the glory of God and put Him first He would make your carrier go the direction that he desired.
Make pleasure an idol, camping, hiking, biking, skiing, horseback riding. Doing things that are enjoyable to give you gratification.
If you would put God first, so much more enjoyment is found when we live our lives the way that He calls us to live.
Sports an idol, watching or playing. I can’t make it to church it’s Superbowl Sunday. The big NASCAR race is on. I have an important soccer game.
We sacrifice our time with God hoping that we will find enjoyment in life with the shortcut of _______
This same temptation is still leading millions astray.

The devil took Him to the pinnacle. By throwing Himself off the pinnacle and being caught by angels in the temple in front of Jerusalem it would have been a feat that would have made the people proclaim Him as the messiah then and their. The temptation would have been to escape all of the persecutions and hardships that were soon about to follow.
Satan himself uses scripture here. He is using bad hermeneutics and not keeping in step with the rest of scripture, but this goes to show that if you don’t use context, you have a con.
Jesus responds with scripture that shows the error in what Satan is saying.
“You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.
What is this test at Messah.
Therefore the people quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test the Lord?”
And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the people of Israel, and because they tested the Lord by saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”
After the Lord had provided bread from heaven, now instead of asking for water, trusting God to provide. They are now fighting and asking “is the Lord among us or not?” If He is, let Him prove it.
Satan is tempting Jesus saying, “prove that you are the Messiah and that God is with you.”

We might not jump off a cliff and ask Him to catch us, in fact many times you won’t hear believers speak in a way to put God to the test. However the way that we react to circumstances not only show that we were putting God to the test, but He failed our test.
How could God let this happen!? How is God loving if i’m Going through ______?!
We place expectations on God that he has never said in scripture he would do.
We are placing expectations on God that are outside His will, and when He doesn’t fulfill those expectations we are wrongfully angry.
When we are mad at God, it is because we are putting Him to the test on a promise He has not made.
Don’t fear the trials that you might face, trust the sovereign Lord who cares for you. Don’t give into meaningless ventures that will pull you away from God but make it a point to draw near to Him. Don’t place expectations on God that He hasn’t promised to fulfill. To Him be Glory, forevermore.
