Jesus is led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit.
God brought Him out into the wilderness and go without food until He provided it for Him. Satan tempts Him to prove what kind of servant He is—an imperfect servant. He is proven wrong. Jesus took God’s Words and feasted on them rather than physical food, completely satisifed, waiting on God to give the provision He needed. Where the Israelites failed, Jesus passed. ( ). The devil later Satan (v. 10) is the Adversary, the slanderer, who is trying to disqualify Jesus from being Israel’s Kinsman-Redeemer.
In , God made this promise to Israel’s Messiah in . Is it true? Would He keep it? Would God provide the angels needed? Jesus couldn’t see them until the end, but they were there all the time. Where Israel failed (:2ff) Jesus passed.
Satan takes Jesus to Jerusalem. Because of her rebellion against God, Israel had been given over to him as had all the other nations. With Satan in full control would Jesus take the easiest route and compromise with him? Satan showed Him the world in its glory and power worshiping him. Satan will give Jesus all the Kingdoms of the world without having to go to the Cross. Would Jesus join with Satan and get all of this without going to the Cross or would He remain loyal to God’s plan to accomplish this through the nation of Israel whereby Jesus would be King not just of Israel but of the whole world by going to the Cross?
The Righteousness discussed here isn’t the righteousness associated with faith righteousness unto eternal life but the righteousness associated with being the friends of God.

THE RE-GIVING OF THE LAW

Now, Jesus is qualified to begin His public ministry in Israel:
He begins in Galilee as Is. prophesied (). (Mat. 4:12-16)
He begins to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom. ()
He begins to gather unto Himself a special category of children out from among apostate Israel. ()
He begins to manifest the signs of the prophesied Kingdom. ()
He begins to expose Israel’s vain religious system, its teachings and its teachers and leaders, and instruct His followers to separate themselves from it. ()
The Sermon on the Mount is based on
Jesus is going to make the Law, which had been buried under the traditions of men, honorable again by exposing the corruption of Israel’s vain religious system while imparting corrective doctrines. He gave them a testimony that could be bound up and taken with them when they were forced to leave the land. This teaching would give them light differentiating them from the vain religious system in which was not light (1 Jn.). They would be salt and light and great in the Kingdom ()
Having cast out demons and brought in healing, Jesus gives the Sermon on the Mount fulfilling by setting things in order about the Law in Truth as He readies them for the display of His Righteousness in saving/delivering His friends and destroying His enemies.

The Beatitudes (): Words of comfort by giving reasons for happiness among the believing remnant in light of the Kingdom being at hand.
Happiness under grievous conditions of suffering and oppression because their predicament is about to be reversed (5:3-6)—Poor in Spirit (know all needs must be met by God and have faith in Him to do it)(; , ); Mourners (; , ; contrast ).; Meek (; Ps. 451-7 contrast ); Desire Righteousness more than anything else (; ; ; contrast ); Merciful (; esp. vv. 24-26; contrast with ); Pure in heart will see God (, ; ; contrast ); Peacemakers (; contrast with ); the Persecuted for Righteousness sake (follow in the long line of the prophets).
During this time of tribulation, the believing remnant (who have the faith of Abraham for spiritual salvation unto eternal life) will be intensely persecuted solely because of their relationship to God. Their strongest desire and longing is the arrival of the Righteousness of God that will displayed when He returns to deliver His friends (the believing remnant and those associated with them) and destroy His enemies (those operating against His people). In between these two righteousnesses, they were to walk righteously in accord with the Royal Law of Liberty as revealed in the Sermon on the Mount, especially the y yr. Tribulation Period, and more especially the final 3.5 yrs.
When we add to this the concept of “endure until the end” (; ; ) and associated ideas: ; ; ; ; ; ;
Persecution will lead blessing for the believing remnant because it pushes them into greater trust in God for their needs as they await the promise of the Kingdom, giving her the patience she needs to endure to the end (of that Tribulation Period) (Mat. 10:22.
Those who have the faith righteousness of Abraham by believing in relying on God’s Word to them—the Royal Law of Liberty in accord with Israel’s Prophetic Scriptures—are those who are poor in spirit, mourners, meek and long for the righteousness that God will display when He returns to deliver His friends and destroy His enemies.
Persecution will lead to blessing for the believing remnant because while she mourns without comfort from the world, she knows she will be comforted by God in the Kingdom, giving her the patience she needs to endure to the end. .
Persecution will lead to blessing for the believing remnant because while she is meek/lowly by the world’s standards, she is the inheritor of the whole earth by God’s, giving her the patience needed to endure to the end.
Persecution will lead to blessing for the believing remnant because it will intensify her longing after the coming Righteousness of God above all else, giving her the patience she needs to endure until the end.
b.
Happiness when their conduct and behavior is based on Jesus’ corrective teachings. (5:7-12).
The Similitudes (): Words exhorting them to live in accord with the Light He was giving them.
The Similitudes (16): Words exhorting them to live in accord with the Light He was giving them.
He as Israel’s Messiah King is going to liberate the Law from the error of Israel’s vain religious system, making it the Royal Law of Liberty (, , )
He as Israel’s Messiah King is going to liberate the Law from the error of Israel’s vain religious system, making it the Royal Law of Liberty (, , )
Operating in accord with that would make them the salt and light of the world, showing the way for all, including the Gentiles, to come to God.
The believing remnant will be the firstfruit of what the whole Nation of Israel will do in the future. The believing remnant is supposed to put into effect Kingdom doctrine before the Kingdom comes. Through the teaching of Jesus they have the Law liberated from Israel’s vain religious system ().
The Doers of Truth (): This is how they will be freed from Israel’s vain religious system.
The foundation of the Kingdom wouldn’t rest on the false teachings of the Pharisees () but on the fulfillment of the Law in Truth by Messiah, the believing remnant and the re-gathered Nation of Israel.
Entering the Kingdom will not be based on outer obedience to the false teachings of the Pharisees but on obedience to the Law of Truth that comes from faith righteousness () (Is. 60:3)
Entering the Kingdom will not be in accord with the false teaching of the Pharisees that Jesus was trying to destroy the Law and denied that there would be a future judgment.
Those who correct their thinking and deeds with Jesus’ teaching will be great in the Kingdom.
5:20—The vain religious system put great weight in lesser and greater sins…Jesus turns it on its head. They say some commands don’t really matter. vv. 21-22: Calling someone a fool is just as bad as being angry against someone without a cause which is just as bad as killing someone. If you do this like the Pharisees and teach others to do likewise you are least in the kingdom.
The Doers of Truth (): This is how they will be freed from Israel’s vain religious system.
The Pharisees taught that killing was bad but didn’t teach that the external act of killing really comes from evil in the heart—coveting, hatred, discord, spite, evil thoughts, blasphemy, anger, wrath, lack of value and esteem for others (; ; . Jesus teaches both. During the 400 years of God’s silence, Israel’s vain religious system claimed to be conducting God’s righteousness, they were God’s representatives, He though like they thought.
Jesus’ teaches addresses the inner heart and thoughts condition, not just external acts (; ), leading to the knowledge of the sinful inner heart not a self-righteousness based on external works. Paul does this with one of the comprehensive commands about coveting (). Thou shalt not covet wrought in him all manner of evil desires. The Pharisees taught that all that mattered was the external act as long as they refrained from that they were righteous. But they should have used them to expose their inner sinfulness and natural unrighteousness. The commands were to expose what was in the heart and get them to flee to His Jehovah Name and Grace.
5:27ff—The Pharisees said adultery was wrong but lust from the heart wasn’t and abused the basis for divorce, allowing men to divorce women so that they could marry another woman that they were lusting for. Adultery was really from inordinate desires, sexual lusts, and abuse of one’s body. Fornication, rape, were ways they allowed outside of marriage, liscentiousness are all heart issues that they should have placed under this one overall command.
5:30—Thous shalt not covet. Right hand and right eye are the things we covet the most. We say someone is his right hand man, etc…the things they love the most…this is intensified in the tribulation because they will be imporverished for His name’s sake, and they will see the vain religious system thriving and they will want to go after it and get it…they will be offended.
