Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs 18
Pray before we get started.
Has anyone ever been hurt by words?
Did you like it?
Has anyone ever hurt others by words?
Has anyone ever driven a car?
How is told where to go?
What steers it
No matter the storm that rages against it, the steering wheel tells it where to go.
Semi’s the same way
What about a forest fire? How do they usually begin?
With a small spark.
Smokey the bear, “only you can prevent forest fires.”
The bible describes something through theses pictures of the reality of our tongues.
Though they are small they steer our whole body.
Though they are small they can bring great ruin.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs
There are many wild beasts that man has learned to tame but the tongue is not one of them.
V.8 An unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
IF you were to offer someone something to drink that would benefit their life would you give them a glass of antifreeze or fresh, clean glass of water?
This is what we do with out tongues though to our parents, to our friends, to our those in our community.
When we tear down those we love with our mouths it is like giving them a glass of antifreeze. It is going to break that person.
I don’t care how much someone says they enjoy being disrespected it hurts. It takes a strong man and woman to not retaliate to hurtful words.
With our tongues we bless God and say we love you, then we turn to our brother and and say i hate you who has been made in the image of God.
We learn here that our tongues begin to reveal something about who we are and where we stand with God.
For you are not going to have a fig tree and bear olives or fresh water stream bear saltwater.
It reveals a deeper diagnosis of our hearts.
Say i was a coach and i wanted to build a good basketball team. How would i want to find out if my future players could actually play ball?
Would it be if they had jordan shoes on?
Or a basketball jersey?
Does a mans attire tell the story?
What about taking his word for it?
These basics that would reveal a good basketball player, well has similar traits to seeing the heart. Find a man or a woman with a good heart. Listen to the abundance of their mouths which bears forth their heart.
“Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or else make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for a tree is known by its fruit. Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Matthew 12:
What does your tongue reveal about you?
If everything you said was put on to a scanner and categorize by its fruit what would the outcome be?
fights
arguments
Gossip
blasphemes
dirty language and jokes that doesnt honor God
lies
Will my tongue be used to bring death and division in my home, my school, my neighborhood, or will i use it to bring life to those around me?
Know this is a task that man cannot go alone. As it reveals the true state of our hearts only God can take that which is evil and unruly and turn it into good and obedient.
I need Gods help to help be bless my enemy when i am cursed.
I need Gods help to conceal a matter rather than disclose it to all that are willing to hear.
I need Gods help to not tear down someone for the sake of laughter
I need Gods help to encourage and not divide.
Its not just well i need to do better. The reality is we cannot do better unless we are rewired. Because our wiring is corrupt. This is because our hearts are. I need God to come in and rewire me.
This is the root problem of our hearts.
This is right now where my truck is at.
needs a new computer.
IF you have a virus
When the old one is in though outwardly it may appear to be good when you put it under a load it acts up.
The problem is not the load. The load just revealed the problem.
The only fix is a new computer.
Your problem is not your mouth. The problem is your heart.
When you trust and and believe in Christ the bible tells us that God makes in us a new heart. we become a new creation. Now able to have a mouth that is tamed.
A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself;
The simple pass on and are punished.
Proverbs
The outcome of the man who doesn’t know how to tame his tongue.
Our tongues have the power to build or destroy. If we never learn to tame them they will destroy our lives and those we love.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
And those who love it will eat its fruit.
Proverbs
have you ever seen this played out in life?
Where someone has been been discouraged by our words or someone elses?
Where someone has been encouraged?
There

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold
In settings of silver.
Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold
Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear.
Proverbs 25:
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold
In settings of silver.
A wholesome tongue is a tree of life,
But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Proverbs 15:
Whoever guards his mouth and tongue
Keeps his soul from troubles.
There is something that we see about out tongues that reveals something about our heart.
A fool’s lips enter into contention,
And his mouth calls for blows.
A fool’s mouth is his destruction,
And his lips are the snare of his soul.
A whip for the horse,
A bridle for the donkey,
And a rod for the fool’s back.
Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest you also be like him.
Answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest he be wise in his own eyes.
Proverbs 26:3
Where there is no wood, the fire goes out;
And where there is no talebearer, strife ceases.
As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire,
So is a contentious man to kindle strife.
The words of a talebearer are like tasty trifles,
And they go down into the inmost body.
Fervent lips with a wicked heart
Are like earthenware covered with silver dross.
He who hates, disguises it with his lips,
And lays up deceit within himself;
When he speaks kindly, do not believe him,
For there are seven abominations in his heart;
Though his hatred is covered by deceit,
His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
Whoever digs a pit will fall into it,
And he who rolls a stone will have it roll back on him.
A lying tongue hates those who are crushed by it,
And a flattering mouth works ruin.
Proverbs 26:20-
Will my tongue be used to bring death and division in my home, my school, my neighborhood, or will i use it to bring life to those around me?
