Why DO WE spend the time to read God’s Word?
Why DO WE spend the time to read God’s Word?
Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in heaven.
His Word is Sure.
Its settled.
Its sure.
Its determined.
Its settled in Heaven.
No earthly person can touch it. He keeps his Word from Heaven. No possibility of anything overcoming or anyone destroying it or invalidating it. There no loopholes or restrictions.
Guarantees and Warrantees. You never know if its really going to mean anything.
Thats not how it works with God. His Word is sure, because his character is sure.
However unsettled and unsure we are, we serve a God who has settled His Word.
Thats one reason why we read it.
We live in an unsettled world. An ever changing place. We read his Word because it is the constant in a world of variables.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
His Word is proven.
Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands. They stand this day according to Your ordinances, For all things are Your servants.
Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands.
He has been faithful throughout the generations.
We study the Bible and the different ways God has been faithful to keep his word time and time again to His people.
Adam.
Noah
Abraham
Isaac
Jacob
Moses
Joshua
David
Every one of these men saw how God did according to his Word.
All the prophets.
Then you get to Jesus, the fulfillment and apex of all of human history and you start to see how every promise come together in him.
Then we come to Acts. God is faithful to build his church.
Church History. (This is neglected, but you really should study it.)
His Word is proven. It has stood the test of time. The very reason you and I are here today is because God’s Word has been true.
Verse 91 tells us why his word stands. He is sovereign.
He is the Lord of all the earth.
We perish without it.
If Your law had not been my delight, Then I would have perished in my affliction.
Without His Word, we perish. Without him revealing himself to us in his grace we all stand rightly condemned.
So thankful for a Christian by the name of Blake Bowman giving me a piece of paper with Scripture on it.
It is by His Word that I am saved. We keep going back to his word because it was His word that arrested our hearts to begin with. But not only that.
Some of you have gone through affliction in this life and the ONLY thing that keeps you going is the enduring promise of God’s Word.
Thats why we read His Word. It helps us. It reassures our faith when everything falls.
We read it because we remember what it did for us.
I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have revived me.
So thankful for a Christian by the name of Blake Bowman giving me a piece of paper with Scripture on it.
Ill never forget those words I read that night in Toccoa Georgia.
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,
We keep going back to His Word because its there we first found salvation.
How could we ever forget that?
We read because by seeking His Word, we prove we are His.
I am Yours, save me; For I have sought Your precepts.
If you have no desire for God’s Word, then you have no desire for God and that means something spiritually.
It means you aren’t His.
Spurgeon said this: “If we have sought the Lord, we may be sure that the LORD has sought us, and will certainly save us.”
If you are seeking His Word and Seeking hIs will, you are proving you are his. That you delight in his Word because you delight in Him.
We read because by it we endure.
The wicked wait for me to destroy me; I shall diligently consider Your testimonies.
We can ignore the bad only when we are focus on something better.
We go through difficult days.
There are those who seek to destroy, but we perservere by an ever focused mind on the word.
We read it because its better than any earthly good.
I have seen a limit to all perfection; Your commandment is exceedingly broad.
This is interesting. Perfect should have no limits. Thats his point.
There is a limit to the perfection of this world, because this world is cursed.
You won’t find a perfect man.
You won’t find a perfect spouse. Lauren almost did.
Everything this world offers is less than perfect.
But his Word has no limit to its perfection.
its perfect. Its authoritative. Its inerrant. Infallible. Its sufficient.
I can see why the Psalmist here would follow up this section with the next verse.
We will end tonight with verse 97
O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day.
