Makes the claim that the US has moved from a post Christian era or age in which people who grew up in the church but no longer attend church to what he terms a pre-Christian age or era in which people did not grow up in the church - they don’t know anything about the church, they are not religious.
Therefore he makes the claim that the United States has become a mission field or rather a missions opportunity.
In fact Greg Finke makes the claim that there are more Lutherans in Africa than in the United States and more Christians in China are worshipping on Sunday than in the United States of America.
Finke further notes that if the people in our communities are not coming to the church building, then we the church should be bringing the church to them so that they can experience the community that they are longing for which can be found in the body of Christ.
Greg Finke declaratively states we need to move from being the church only on Sunday to being the church on Monday through Saturday too in our communities, places of employment, and in the public arena in general.
In summary Greg Finke’s book is saying that we need to become missionary churches within our communities in the United States because the United States is the new mission field.
All we have to do is become missionaries in the places in which we live, work, and go to school!
And as a consequence then, should we put away our efficient methods of evangelism and mission which are ineffective and instead choose to follow Jesus Christ’s effective method of spending time with people and getting to know people and living life together as brothers and sisters in Christ and leading souls to Christ.
Finke goes on to advocate The five practices that help mission minded people to be in position to join Jesus in simple in radical ways:
Seeking (and recognizing) the kingdom- Watch for kingdom opportunities in other words watch and see where Jesus is at work
Hearing from Jesus- what has Jesus been teaching you through his word?
What type of conversations have you been having with Jesus?
Talking with people (starting with learning your neighbors name or the grocery cashier’s name at the check-out line that you see everything you go shopping
Doing good- start with simple acts of daily kindness or good
Ministering Through prayer-
(Part of a daily lifestyle not a missions program at a church or denomination)
Transition To Body- Not Paul the writer, put Paul the Apostle, the messenger, the lmissionary
v6- They went
v7- They came
v7- Did not allow them
v8- They went down
Not Paul the writer of 13 books of the Bible.
Not Paul studied under Gamaliel.
Not Paul the scholar but Paul the missionary is front and center in the book of Acts.
v10- Paul saw the vision
v10- We sought to go
Body- Missions Done Right
We Listen To The Holy Spirit’s Counsel
(watch what we say- know when to speak and when not to speak)
Illustration: President Trump’s meeting with Black preachers to discuss prison reform?
They went, but was forbidden to speak by the Holy Spirit.
Why? Paul was just passing through Phrygia & Galatia on his way to Mysia (do not get distracted)
Where is Asia in reference to Phrygia & Galatia?
Phrygia lay partly in the Roman province of Asia & partly in the province of Galatia
We Let Jesus Guide The Gospel’s Progress
(watch where we go- know where we are suppose to go and where we are not called to go)
They attempted to go, but the Spirit of Jesus did not allow.
Why?
Where is Bithynia in reference to Mysia?
Mysia is the north-west part of the Roman province of Asia.
They came up to Mysia, but was told not to go into Mysia?
Disciples follow Jesus
Mark 6
Submit Ourselves Immediately To God’s Vision
(Note: The Unity Of The Holy Spirit)
v6- They went
v7- They came
v7- Did not allow them
v8- They went down
We ought to be working together more.
That’s why we have missions services such as this one!
v9- Vision appeared to Paul
v10- Paul saw the vision
v10- We sought to go
In order to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit:
We ought to be working together more.
That’s why we have missions services such as this one!
Paul and Silas did not need to call a church meeting to elect a special missions committee
Or wait for enough people to show up to meet quorom in order to make the final decision
Or send a letter back to the church in Jerusalem for permission to move forward
Nor conduct a chicken or fish dinner sale in order to raise the funds to travel
All Paul, Silas, and Timothy did was decide to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit!
All they needed to know was somebody needed help
Transition To Close
Mark 3:13-
If I can help somebody, as I travel along
If I can help somebody, with a word or song
If I can help somebody, from doing wrong
No, my living shall not be in vain
There was a thirteen-year old in MOngolia
In her classes on the history of missions
Mark 7:1
If I can help somebody, as I travel along
If I can help somebody, with a word or song
If I can help somebody, from doing wrong
No, my living shall not be in vain
No, my living shall not be in vain
No, my living shall not be in vain
If I can help somebody, as I'm singing the song
You know, my living shall not be in vain
