SLIDE FOR FISHERS OF MEN - DO THE WHAT IF?
WHAT IF WE COULD DO WHAT JESUS DID?
Lord of my emotions and the expression of my feelings, Lord of my will and all my decisions, Lord of my body, physical health, exercise, diet, rest, and appearance, Lord of my sexuality and all its expression, Lord of my family and all my relationships, Lord of my workplace, and my service to others, Lord of my material goods and my perceived needs, Lord of my finances and how I view and handle money, Lord of my plans, my ambitions, my future, and my destiny. Lord Jesus, I invite You into every area of my life.
WHAT IF, LIKE JESUS, WE COULD IMPACT OUR WORLD IN A MAJOR WAY WITH HAVING TO TRAVEL MORE THATN 160KM FROM HOME.?
WHAT IF WE TOOK, UNSCHOOLED, ORDINARY FOLK AND EQIUPED THEM TO TURN THIER WORLD UPSIDEDOWN?
I know You are trustworthy and gentle and want the best for me. I believe You can work miracles in my life. Teach me to hear your voice. Help me to yield my whole life to You. In Jesus name, Amen.
WHAT IF IN 4 SHORT YEARS WE CREATE A MOVEMENT OF DISCIPLE-MAKERS, JUST LIKE JESUS?
WHAT IF I TOLD YOU THAT ALL OF THIS WAS POSSIBLE?
John 1:39 ESV
He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.

FOLLOW ME

John 1:43 ESV
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.”

FOLLOW ME AND I WILL MAKE YOU FISHERS OF MEN

Matthew 4:19 ESV
And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Mark 1:16–20 ESV
Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD AND LEAST-LIVED OUT TEACHINGS OF JESUS.
“FOLLOWING” - STORY
JAMES
JOHN
SIMON (peter)
ANDREW
THIS TAKES PLACE 18 MONTHS INTO JESUS’ MINISTRY
THESE MEN HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING JESUS
LATER JESUS CALLS MATTHEW TO JOIN THEM
SLIDE CHALLENGES TO GO DEEPER
NOW HE CHALLENGES THEM TO GO DEEPER
RELATIONALLY
JESUS INVITED THE DISCIPLES TO COME AND FOLLOW HIM
FROM HERE ON IN HE INVESTS MORE TIME IN THEM AND THEY WILL LATER BECOME ONE OF THE TWELVE
FAITHFUL FOLLOWERS
INTENTIONAL
2. INTENTIONAL
THEY GO ON 6 FISHING TRIPS WITH JESUS
THE FIRST ONE CASTS OUT A DEMON IN A SYNAGOGUE - RELIGIOUS UNSAVED CROWD
Mark 1:21–28 ESV
And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and was teaching. And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes. And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
SECONDLY HE LEADS THEM TO PETERS HOME WHERE HE HEALS PETERS MOTHER-IN-LAW
Mark 1:29–31 ESV
And immediately he left the synagogue and entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon’s mother-in-law lay ill with a fever, and immediately they told him about her. And he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
THIRDLY JESUS PREACHES TO THE CROWDS OF PETER’S HOME TOWN CAPERNAUM (NEIGHBOURHOOD MINISTRY)
Mark 1:32–34 ESV
That evening at sundown they brought to him all who were sick or oppressed by demons. And the whole city was gathered together at the door. And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons. And he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
JESUS SLIPS OFF TO PRAY
Mark 1:37 ESV
and they found him and said to him, “Everyone is looking for you.”
JESUS THEN TELLS THEM HIS PRIOROTY IS TO FISH FOR MEN NOT TO PLEASE THE CROWD - HE IS NOW HEADING OFF TO OTHER TOWNS
AFTER THE INITIAL FISHING TRIPS
JESUS HEADS OUT TO “MISSIONS TRIP”
JESEPHUS THE JEWISH HISTORIAN THAT LIVED AT THE TIME TELLS THAT THERE WAS AT LEAST 204 VILLAGES IN GALILEE LARGE ENOUGH TO HAVE SYNOGOGUES
Mark 1:39 ESV
And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
THIS WAS JESUS GIVING THEM HUNDREDS OF EXAMPLES
JESUS NOW STRETCHES THE DISCIPLES
Mark 1:40–45 ESV
And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.” But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was out in desolate places, and people were coming to him from every quarter.
MARK 1:40-45
THIS IS JESUS SAYING LOOK AROUND IT IS NOT ALWAYS PEOPLE WHO LOOK LIKE US THAT WE NEED TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT
NEXT JESUS SPEAKS TO THE LEADERS AND TEACHERS
Mark 2:1–2 ESV
And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.
THIS IS THE STORY OF THE FRIENDS THAT WERE CONCERNED AND LOWERED THEIR FRIEND THROUGH A HOLE IN THE ROOF
JESUS SHOWED THE DISCIPLES THAT FAITH IS VISIBLE AND CAN BE DEMONSTRATED BY ACTIONS
THEN JESUS DOES THE UNTHINKABLE
Mark 2:13–20 ESV
He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to him, and he was teaching them. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day.
SO THIS THIRD CHALLENGE WAS NOT ONLY
RELATIONAL
INTENTIONAL
MISSIONAL
WHILE WE RECOGNISE THAT THE PERSONAL MISSION OF JESUS WAS TO DIE ON THE CROSS FOR OUR SINS
HIS MINISTRY CALLING WAS TO ADVANCE HIS FATHER’S KINGDOM BY INITIATIONG A MOVEMENT OF MULTIPLYING DISCIPLES
Revelation 7:9–10 ESV
After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”
REVELATIONS 7:9-10
JESUS’ MISSION WAS NOT TO REACH THE WORLD BUT TO MAKE DISCIPLES WHO WERE CAPABLE OF REACHING THE WORLD
JESUS KNEW THAT IF HE MADE DISCIPLE MAKERS OVER 2000 YEARS LATER THERE WOULD BE OVER A BILLION CHRIST FOLLOWERS THROUGH THE LAW OF MULTIPLICATION
IF JESUS JUST REACHED THE WORLD WHILE HE WAS HERE ON EARTH AND NOT TRAINED ANYONE ELSE, ONLY 250 MILLION PEOPLE WOULD HAVE BEEN REACHED AND WE WOULD NOT BE HERE TODAY.
Matthew 10:37 ESV
Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
THIS LEVEL OF DISCIPLESHIP REQUIRES A LOT OF INTENTIONALITY AND FEW MAKE IT TO THIS STAGE.
THE WORKERS ARE FEW BUT THE HARVEST IS PLENTIFUL
Matthew 10:35–40 ESV
For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.
