1 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

Introduction

A question I had when preparing for today was this:
Question: What do we have that could perfectly embody and capture what mission is?
First, it important to define mission. More specifically Christian mission.
gotquestions.org defined Christian mission as:
"following Christ’s call: sharing the gospel with the lost world through God’s wisdom and strength”
Question: So what do we have that embodies and captures the call to share the gospel with the lost world through God’s wisdom and strength?
As I do at times I typed in Christian Missions on google and here’s what came up at first sight.
Here’s what came up at first sight.
What Christian mission is not.
From experiencemissions.org
“Live Authentically, Love Your Neighbors, Serve Within Local Churches. Expand Your Faith, Develop Meaningful Relationships, Live Your Mission Today! Discover Genuine Faith. Experience Culture. Live Your Mission. Grow closer to God”
From Wikipedia
“A Christian mission is an organized effort to spread Christianity to new converts. Missions involve sending individuals and groups, called missionaries, across boundaries, most commonly geographical boundaries, to carry on evangelism or other activities, such as educational or hospital work”
“A Christian mission is an organized effort to spread Christianity to new converts. Missions involve sending individuals and groups, called missionaries, across boundaries, most commonly geographical boundaries, to carry on evangelism or other activities, such as educational or hospital work”
Christian mission is not missions organizations
Is it missions organizations?
Is it Christian missionaries?
Christian mission is not missionaries
Is it supporting Christian missionaries?
Christian mission is not
Is it missions trips? Short or long term?
Question: Do these definitions and descriptions capture for us what Christian mission is?
Question: Do they capture what the call is about? To share the gospel with the lost world through God’s wisdom and strength?
I believe what captures and embodies the call to share the gospel with the lost world through God’s wisdom and strength is not the efforts and the going out that any of us do in the world.
The efforts we make in evangelizing the world are themselves only the cause of what it at the core of Christian mission.
There is only one thing that perfectly embodies what Christian mission is.
Which is the incarnation.
This then begs the question...

Question: How does the incarnation perfectly embody Christian missions?

First, the incarnation perfectly embodies Christian mission because the Father sent the Son.

This was the first missional act from God because it was decided before the foundations of the world.
Mark records Jesus speaking of being sent twice.
It perfectly embodies Christian mission because it was the act of the Triune God to not only proclaim the gospel in the form of a servant, but the incarnation of Jesus displayed for us the reason and the means for Christian missions.
In , Jesus spoke of those who do not receive as those who do not receive also the one who sent Him.
In , in the parable of the tenants, Jesus alluded to Himself as the beloved Son who was sent.
The Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church said of the incarnation:

The Christian doctrine of the Incarnation affirms that the eternal Son of God took flesh from His human mother and that the historical Christ is at once both fully God and fully man. It is opposed to all theories of a mere theophany or transitory appearance of God in human form, frequently met with in other religions. By contrast, it asserts an abiding union in the Person of Christ of Godhead and manhood without the integrity or permanence of either being impaired.

The incarnation perfectly embodies Christian mission because the Father sent the Son to take upon flesh and dwell among us.
God the Son was sent and was the perfect word and expression of the Father.
He was sent by the Father as the perfect word and expression of the Father.
John 3:16 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
The incarnation was the result of God’s love. For His glory primarily and for those who would believe!
There is no better example of being sent.
The incarnation perfectly embodies Christian mission because the Father sent the Son who was Himself God.

Second, the incarnation perfectly embodied Christian mission because in sending the Son, Jesus perfectly revealed the sender, God the Father.

John 14:9 ESV
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Hebrews 1:3 ESV
3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
There is no better example of revealing the truth to the world than the incarnation.
John 6:44–46 ESV
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. 45 It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— 46 not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Jesus revealed the Father perfectly to us in His appearance.
The incarnation perfectly embodied Christian mission because in sending the Son, Jesus perfectly revealed the sender, God the Father.

Lastly, the incarnation perfectly embodied Christian mission because Jesus Christ died, He was raised from the dead and He was exalted.

This is the message and the foundation of Christian mission.
Without this truth, we do not have a message and a foundation.
1 Corinthians 15:17 ESV
17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins.
This is the message that determines whether or not we are doing Christian mission.
The incarnation shows us exactly what Christian mission is and it determines what it is and what it is for.
Meaning that as the Son was sent by the Father, so also we are sent by the Father to share the good news of the death, burial and resurrection.
Missions without the gospel is no mission at all.
The incarnation perfectly embodied Christian mission because Jesus Christ died, He was raised from the dead and He was exalted.
The incarnation perfectly expressed the mission of God to the world.

Sermon

Our focus today comes from verse 16 of first Timothy chapter 3.

1 Timothy was written by the apostle Paul at around 62-66 A.D.
Paul wanted to exhort and encourage Timothy to continue the work He was doing in Ephesus where he was working and overseeing it.
You can say that this letter was a manual for leadership building and warning.
In it we see the call for order and structure for leadership and conduct within the house of God.
Paul, with a concern of a spiritual father, wanted Timothy to guard Himself and the church against false teachers and false doctrine.
We see this in the following chapter.
Paul hoped to get to Timothy. But if for some reason he would be delayed from doing so, Paul said in 4-15,
1 Timothy 3:15 ESV
15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
1 Timothy 3:14–15 ESV
14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
Paul had just given Timothy the descriptions of what Elders and Deacons looked like.
He did this in order for Timothy to have a way of caring for the churches.
Paul wanted Timothy to know how one ought to behave in the household of God.
Then he continued to call the church, the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.
This is what precedes the verse that we are focusing on today.
In verse 16, Paul is giving Timothy now the message of the church.
After giving Him how one ought to behave in the household of God, he now gives Timothy what one ought to confess as the household of God.

Read Verse 16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

This is what we, as those who are supposed to be on mission, are to confess.
Paul speaks of the mystery of godliness.

“Mystery” is that term used by Paul to indicate truth hidden in the OT age and revealed in the NT (see note on v. 9). Godliness refers to the truths of salvation and righteousness in Christ, which produce holiness in believers; namely, the manifestation of true and perfect righteousness in Jesus Christ.

“Mystery” is that term used by Paul to speak of a truth that was hidden.
And godliness referred to the truth of the salvation and righteousness found in Christ.
In , Paul spoke of this mystery being kept as a secret for ages.
which produce holiness in believers; namely, the manifestation of true and perfect righteousness in Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:7 ESV
7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory.
Paul spoke of this mystery being about how the Gentiles came to faith. Which happened due to what he speaks of here in our text.
1 Timothy 3:16 ESV
16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

The mystery of godliness was:

First, He was manifested in the flesh.

This is what we are to speak of in Christian mission.
To manifest meant to cause to become visible. To make appear, or to make visible. To cause to be seen. Which is the first call to Christian mission.
24.19 φανερόωa; ἐμφανίζωa: to cause to become visible—‘to make appear, to make visible, to cause to be seen.’
We are to speak of how God the Son appeared to us. That He was made visible. That He appeared in the flesh.
Which is the first call to Christian mission. To speak of how God the Son appeared.
We are called to make visible the living Christ.
Johannes P. Louw and Eugene Albert Nida, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Based on Semantic Domains (New York: United Bible Societies, 1996), 278.
The appearance of the Son of God sent by the Father, gives us what causes salvation when believed!
When we proclaim of it and tell others of it, if they believe this to be true, then they are saved because of it.
That is why we must share it.
John 20:31 ESV
31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
John 5:24 ESV
24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
The mistake many make is that they wait for a missions trip or a church event to share the truth of Jesus coming in the flesh.
Question:
Jesus coming in the flesh proved to be what the prophets spoke of concerning the Messiah.
Many in the visible church are embarrassed by it. Because it sounds like a fairy tale or fictional.
He was the Christ.
But...
Romans 1:16 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
The visible Son of God lived here amongst us. He appeared to us and He lived a sinless life.
Without this we have no message! This is foundational for the church. Without it we are no church. Paul did not just insert this here by accident.
One can have elders and deacons but without this, a church is not a church no matter how structured and churchy it may look.
He was manifested in the flesh. He appeared and we must confess this as His church.

Question: Do you want to know what Christian mission is?
Look no further than in the person and work of Jesus Christ!
The incarnation of Jesus Christ being fully God and fully man is what we are to confess.
He was manifested in the flesh.

Second, He was vindicated by the Spirit.

To be vindicated meant to demonstrate that something is morally right. It was to show something or someone to be right. To be proven right.
88.16 δικαιόωb: to demonstrate that something is morally right—‘to show to be right, to prove to be right.’ ὅπως ἂν δικαιωθῇς ἐν τοῖς λόγοις σου ‘you must be shown to be right when you speak’ .
Paul is speaking of Christ being proven true by the Spirit. Which is speaking of His resurrection.
Paul, when writing Romans waited no time speaking about this in the first four verses of chapter one.
Romans 1:1–4 ESV
1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord,
Jesus was proven true in that the Spirit of God raised Him from the dead.
Johannes P. Louw and Eugene Albert Nida, Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament: Based on Semantic Domains (New York: United Bible Societies, 1996), 743.
The KJV was right to say in this part of the verse that Jesus was justified in the Spirit. Meaning the what He had spoken was proven true.
He was vindicated by the Spirit when the Spirit raised Him from the dead.
This validates what we confess today! We speak not of a dead man who rotted in a tomb. But of a living Savior who rose on the third day!
But of a living Savior who rose on the third day!
We declare Jesus to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit by his resurrection from the dead.
Story of our first encounter while planning for a missions trip.
We looked for an organization or missionary couple
We found one but they wanted us to do VBS without the bible
They wanted us to leave out that Jesus appeared, died and was raised from the dead
This deals with the need of having a point of reference.
They wanted Vacation School without the Bible
Paul, anchored His instructions for order and leadership in the church with this truth.
Structure cannot supersede or determine the truth of the incarnation.
Question: What do I mean?
The church here in America has determined its conduct and way of doing things according to what is successful or to what is traditional
Many have felt comfort in maintaining a structure that caters to nominal/comfortable Christianity
Many have intentionally left out the death and resurrection from their messages and traded them for what works as far as getting the crowds or a concern with how uncomfortable people may feel about the gospel
Paul did not cater to this. He wrote Timothy what was most important here. Namely, that Christ was justified/vindicated by the Spirit. He rose from the dead and lives.
But friends, this is what gives the structure of the church life and meaning! Without it you will only be left with structure which has no life in it at all.
Quotes from The Trellis and the Vine
We will be arguing that structures don’t grow ministry any more than trellises grow vines, and that most churches need to make a conscious shift—away from erecting and maintaining structures, and towards growing people who are disciple-making disciples of Christ.
Paul was sure to give Timothy what the church was about.
Its about a Risen Savior who calls us to be raised with Him.
To live out our calling in a world that is dark and in need of this message.
Jesus was vindicated. He was proven to be true because He was God and He was raised from the dead. The first of many.

Third, we see that He was seen by angels.

Question: What is so important about Jesus being seen by angels? Why would Paul put this alongside of being manifested in the flesh and vindicated by the Spirit?
This is important because of the cosmic reality of His appearance.
He was seen by Angels during His birth, His earthly ministry and in His resurrection.
He was seen by sinless beings who bore witness of Him.
Heaven paid attention to this more than any other event in history.
The gospel was what they longed to see in its completion!
1 Peter 1:10–12 ESV
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
This is important because what the angels saw
He was seen by angels who longed to see His glory revealed in His death, burial and resurrection.

Fourth, He was proclaimed among the nations.

Which was the mystery revealed!
This was what the Abrahamic covenant was all about.
Paul in Galatians, spoke of Abraham coming to covenant with God through faith not circumcision.
Galatians 3:7–9 ESV
7 Know then that it is those of faith who are the sons of Abraham. 8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.” 9 So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
This is why we proclaim the gospel to all nations. Because those who come to faith by believing will be saved.
This message goes to all who have an ear!
The mission of the church is the proclamation of the gospel.
Paul was making sure that Timothy held this above everything else since it was the mystery revealed.
The gospel was preached to Abraham and we continue to do so today!

Fifth, He was believed on in the world

He was proclaimed among the nations and He was believed on in the world.
This is what Christian mission does.
This really begs the question of our own being convinced.
Anyone can say with words what the gospel is.
But it is another thing to share it because you have been convinced of it.
What precedes gospel proclamation is a convinced, believing heart.
After the resurrection, the disciples who struggled and left Jesus when He was arrested, responded to the resurrection with their lives being given away for it.
Question: Have you been convinced?
Paul was making it very clear that this mystery revealed where Christ was proclaimed and believed in, would by kept and sealed into the fabric of the church.
Question: Have you believed?
John 20:29 ESV
29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
It is going to take a church that absolutely believes to proclaim the message of the gospel to a dying and sinful world.
This is where our mission comes from.

Lastly, He was taken up in glory.

taken up in glory.
He ascended and now sits at the right hand of the Father.
He lives and He is our hope.
Christian mission is not just preaching, proclaiming and believing. It is also hoping.
Hope in the living Christ!
He lives and He loves us today.
Question: What do we have that could perfectly embody and capture what mission is?
I submit to you a living Savior who came as a man, and died a gruesome death but rose on the third day and ascended to the Father.
We confess that:
He was manifested in the flesh
vindicated by the Spirit
seen by angels
proclaimed among the nations
believed on in the world
taken up in glory
