FORD
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples,
“The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat,
so do and observe whatever they tell you, but not the works they do. For they preach, but do not practice.
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others.
You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!

Nicodemus
Probably James
Paul
circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee;
as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless.
phil 3:5-
The Pharisees were a strict sect of orthodox Jews known for teaching and keeping the Torah
Tax Collectors
Tax Collectors
Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.
Chief Tax collector Zacchaeus
And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, “Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.”
Ostracized
If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
On par with prostitutes
Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.
So… when hearing this story realize it was about a religious man who was a member of a sound church and an outcast traitor on the level of a prostitute

And he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.
Abraham
Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar?
You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;
Jesus
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
The Pharisee was justified in the sight of the people; the tax collector certainly was not.
Coram Deo
Coram Deo
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Abraham
For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.
That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.”
The tax collector was not justified before God, whereas the tax collector was
3 clarifying statements
3 clarifying statements
God does not need your service, but your neighbor does.
God is not impressed by your deeds. but your neighbor should be
Through the conduit of faith, God imputes the righteousness of Christ to you and you are declared righteous by God in the presence of the saints and the angels
Simul Justus et Peccator
Simul Justus et Peccator
Justus
For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
Peccator
To whom was Jesus speaking?
He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt:
All my life I have been called unworthy
Named by the voice of my shame and regret
But when I hear You whisper, "Child lift up your head"
I remember oh God, You're not done with me yet
May we each and collectively humble ourselves before God, to the end that the lost among us would be saved, and the saved among us would be renewed, and we might all go to our houses justified.
