How do we view the Old Testament?
How do we view the Old Testament?
Do we need the Old Testment any more?
Has everything in the Old Testament been accomplished and fulfilled through Jesus today?
Do we need the Old Testment any more?
Is the God of the New Testament the same God of the Old Testament?
Is the God of the New Testament the same God of the Old Testament?
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
Malachi 3:6
How do we Interpret the Bible?
How do we Interpret the Bible?
Context is King
Scripture should shape your theology. (Your Theology/Tradition should NOT re-interpret or Shape Scripture)
Your Theology/Tradition should NOT re-interpret or Shape Scripture
The Bible gets to define what it means when it uses certain words. (Not our modern day thinking or context)
How do we Interpret the two Testaments Together?
How do we Interpret the two Testaments Together?
The Old Testament exists as much as the New.
The New Testament can bring light to things in the Old Testament that were shadowy or hidden.
And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “In you shall all the nations be blessed.”
Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.
I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
The New Testament can re-interpret things in the Old Testament.
The New Testament can reinterpret things in the Old Testament.
Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.
What about the things the New Testament doesn’t expose or change?
What about the things the New Testament doesn’t expose or change?
If God doesn’t change and He has a set pattern of the way things He created should work in the Old Testament that the New Testament doesn’t explicitly change, then it should be assumed it is still works the same way.
If the New Testament doesn’t explicitly change something then it should be assumed it is still works the same way.
Jesus did not come to abolish the Law
Back to our original questions.
1. Has everything in the Old Testament been accomplished and fulfilled through Jesus today?
1. Has everything in the Old Testament been accomplished and fulfilled through Jesus today?
Jesus did not come to abolish the Law
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus did not come to abolish the law.
Matthew
1. Has everything in the Old Testament been accomplished and fulfilled through Jesus today?
NO
2. Do we need the Old Testment any more?
YES
Because the two testaments speak of each other AND because without it we won’t know or understand what is being fulfilled in the New.
New Covenant & the Old Covenant
New Covenant & the Old Covenant
In order for th
Jesus Establishes a New Covenanent
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
In order for there to be a NEW Covenent there must be an OLD Covenant.
What is this New Covenant “New” in comparison to?
But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
For he finds fault with them when he says:
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel
and with the house of Judah,
not like the covenant that I made with their fathers
on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
For they did not continue in my covenant,
and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws into their minds,
and write them on their hearts,
and I will be their God,
and they shall be my people.
And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor
and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
for they shall all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest.
For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
and I will remember their sins no more.”
In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
*
The New Covenant is new relative to the Mosaic Covenant.
The New Covenant is NOT new relative to all of the covenants prior to Jesus’ covenant.
The Mosaic Covenant is made “obsolete.”
The New Covenant is NOT new relative specifically to Abraham, who is the Father of ALL believers.
For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
All who believe are Abrahams offspring (Spiritual Heirs of the promise).
*You can Read which will go on to tell you several more times that the New Covenant is new relative to Moses.
Signs of the Covenants
Signs of the Covenants
Old Testament Sign- Circumcision
New Testament Sign- Baptism
Circumcision and Baptism are not the same, but there are similarities in continuity.
Abrahamic Covenant
Abrahamic Covenant
And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your offspring after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you.
God declarared covenant is everlasting.
Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
In the ceremony of the covenant is performed. Where the covenant is cut and the Torch passes between the pieces.
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?” He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.” And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other. But he did not cut the birds in half. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him. Then the Lord said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.”
When the sun had gone down and it was dark, behold, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites and the Jebusites.”
Sign and Substance of the Covenant
Sign- Circumcision
Substance- Faith
Abraham receives the sign (Circumcision) after he recevies the substance (faith). To make him the father of ALL who believe.
“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven,
and whose sins are covered;
blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
Is this blessing then only for the circumcised, or also for the uncircumcised? For we say that faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness. How then was it counted to him? Was it before or after he had been circumcised? It was not after, but before he was circumcised. He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, and to make him the father of the circumcised who are not merely circumcised but who also walk in the footsteps of the faith that our father Abraham had before he was circumcised.
These verses shows that FAITH, not the sign, is the substance of the covenant and salvation.
God commands that Abraham give his son the sign before he receives the substance (Faith).
