Sunday Service
This morning we arrived at one of the oldest Psalms in the Bible. Most believe that this was written by Moses. And in fact, if you look at the title to the song you'll notice it. That's exactly what your Bible likely says. mine reads A Prayer of Moses the man of God this song then for quite literally thousands of years has proclaimed that God. Is A Mighty Fortress?
Let's read the psalm together. And then we'll work our way through the text. Psalm 90 reads like this. Lord you have been our Dwelling Place in all generations before the mountains were brought forth wherever you had formed the earth and the world from Everlasting to Everlasting you are God. Return Man 2 dust and say return no children of man for a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past Or as a watch in the night. You sweeten the way as with a flood there like a dream like grass that is renewed in the morning in the morning. It flourishes and is renewed in the evening at face and Withers for we are brought to an end by your anger by your wrath. We are dismayed. You have set our iniquities before you. Our secret sins in the light of your presence. For all our days pass away under your wrath. We bring our gears to an end like a sigh. The years of our life are seventy or even by reason of strength 80 get their spanned this but toil and trouble they are soon gone. We fly away. Who considers the power of your anger as your wrath according to the fear of you? So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom. Fraternal Order how long have pity on your servants satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love that we may rejoice and be glad all our days make us glad for as many days as you have Afflicted us and for as many years as we have seen evil, let your work be shown to your servants and your glory is power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord Our God be upon us and establish the work of our hands upon us. Yes, establish the work of our hands.
As Moses recounts God's nature and how he deals with man. He breaks it out into three sections. And so today we'll do the same. It begins with the first two verses that simply list. This truth about God God is eternal.
You'll notice that inverse one then he makes this statement. Different Generations now God has been the dwelling place that the place of safety we could say it like this existed before people.
When the first generation came about Moses saying even then you were there. Ready all ready to be the dwelling place.
God existed before the people But it's more of Eternal than that. He existed before all creation.
Could say it like this before the mountains were brought forth or ever you had formed the Earth in the world even then. You are God.
These versus remind us that God's eternality his existence from eternity pass through eternity future. Is the rock upon which we stand he is our Mighty Fortress Arch welding place. And the reason he can be the reason he always will be in part is because he is eternal. Before the mountains were brought forth wherever you had formed the earth and the world from Everlasting to Everlasting you are God. God's eternality, then is contrasted with the finiteness of man. Infinite God deals with finite man in that takes up the bulk of this song. You may have noticed even as we read just how
Front forward God's dealings are with man and if there's one characteristic. Of his dealings with man. It's simply this that God is the judge.
Let's arrive at that as Moses does step by step?
He says this that God returns us people to dust first three says you return man's dust and say return of children of man for a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past or as a watch in the night.
You see how God's eternality in a sentence. Is interview even when we're talking about our finiteness? We are finite and so we will return to dust. Russell told is that God himself governs time you sweep them away these years you sweep these years away as with a flood. They are like a dream like grass is renewed in the morning in the morning and flourishes and is renewed in the evening it fades and whether it's God governs time and uses all of these agricultural images to emphasize Creation images to emphasize God's eternality as it deals with time. The one thing that is common to all men is that we have 24 hours a day and like he's about to mention here. Even those days are very short. 70 perhaps 80
but God governs all of it.
God also is the judge of the world. Like we mentioned this is the primary way that God seems to interact with man according to this song. We're told that were brought to an end by his anger that were just made at his wrath. The God has put all of our iniquities the secret ones even like we're sheet says he's put them under the spotlight of his presence.
What happens when you face the wrath of almighty God?
First line tells us that we pass away. We pass away under your wrath are years are brought to an end. These short years like we mentioned that are 70 or perhaps 80 at most. That even those years are characterized by toil and trouble.
This Toil and Trouble is a consequence just like the rest of these verses here in the section of consequence of the wrath of God against our sins.
Do samosas reflection verse 11 who considers the power of your anger and your wrath according to the fear of you? Moses is putting front and center. Is this that everyone when you face the wrath of God everyone Withers Just like every blade of grass in the heat of day. Just like everything before a flood. What kind of help is there for us then? Well, this is where Moses finishes the Solomon says. So teach us to number our days. Teach us to number our days according to this knowledge we could say. We want this heart of wisdom of discernment. And he simply says this return. Which is a curious thing to say when he's just taken so many verses to describe what happens when the Lord Returns what happens is wrath righteous wrath return O Lord, how long have pity on your servants? It's for this reason that he wants God to return because even though God is his biggest problem in a sense. It is God alone or salvation is found prettiest Mercy us. We are your servants. But it's beyond me or pity he wants to enter into a relationship. He wants to be satisfied and God in the morning with God steadfast love. He wants to Rejoice over God to be glad in him all our days.
He wants to be made glad like first 15 says for all the days. God has given us.
For as many years as we have seen evil. Another words. Yes, every day is filled with evil because of our sin. Life on this Earth is toil and trouble. But running alongside that Toil and Trouble underneath that toilet trouble surrounding that Toil and Trouble. Is this the goodness of God, so make us glad in it. Finally, he says favor us favor us specifically and letting us see our work have meaning and significance. Because it's not ours in the first place. It's his and knows how he says that this let the work if you let your work be shown to your servants and you are glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord Our God be upon us and establish the work of our hands upon us. You'll notice that God's work begets hours. Yes, he says with emphasis establish the work of our hands. And this brief song Moses has reminded us of God's eternality in our finiteness God's infiniteness. and our finiteness
God's holiness and set apart nature and our wickedness and sinfulness. And yet in all these things we end with this plea for pity and satisfaction and favor because it is to God it is God to whom we turn. And in fact, it was during their Wilderness wanderings. This guy would establish a nation through whom he would send the Messiah Jesus Christ who has now come. He has pity us. He does satisfy us. He has shown favor on us like The Sinner.
Have mercy on me The Sinner. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
