Intro
Text - John 20.21-23
The resurrected Lord meets His disciples
Jesus reminds them of the purpose of their calling
Jesus sends His disciples
Title - When A Disciple Is Ready For Sending
Main Point
Readiness is key to becoming useful and fruitful in the work of God.
But how do we become ready?
What does it mean to be ready?
Background
The “sending out” continues in these last days
God is sending out men and women to the work
because it is harvest time
Luke 10.2 - the harvest is great and the laborers are few
Sermon Points
Three things to know before you say “here I am, send me!”
Training
Commissioning
Empowering
Key Questions:
How do I know that God wants to send me?
How do I know the work that God is sending me to?
How do I know that I can carry out the work?
How do I know that God is sending me?
God is training you today - DISCIPLESHIP
discipleship is preparation for ministry
discipleship happens in real life, not just in a classroom
Jesus can only send out “disciples”
God cannot use one who has been “discipled”
only true disciples are willing to -
deny himself and take up his own cross
follow all the way
lay down his/her life for Christ
discipleship trains you to behave as a lamb in the midst of wolves
Luke 10.3
How do I know the work to which God is sending me?
General purpose of preaching the gospel - MAKE DISCIPLES
disciple is the “product” or expected result of preaching the gospel
Mark 16.16 - preaching is the work
What if I am not a man, called to preach?
(for women)
There are other areas of service
notice - Jesus did not speak about sending the 5-fold ministry here
prophets - proclaimer, herald, preacher
wise (men) - grk. sophos, either man or woman
scribes - grk. grammateus, expert interpreter or teacher in writing; authors, writers
God imparts the gifts that we will use in His service
How do I know that I can carry out the work?
Jesus empowers His disciples - EMPOWERMENT
Authority
as the Father has sent me…
The authority is in the commission.
Power - Acts 1.8
The Power comes with the Holy Spirit.
Conclusion
When these three things have taken place in your life -
discipling
commissioning
empowering
THEN, you know that God is sending you.
AND YOU WILL NOT BACK OUT AND RUN, BECAUSE YOU KNOW THAT GOD HAS PREPARED YOU FOR THE WORK!
ALL YOU CAN SAY IS
“HERE AM I, LORD.
SEND ME!”
WHERE TO, LORD?
WHEN DO WE GO?
