Last week Security in Christ…. Therefore… Wants to talk about the nature of that relationship… Comparing being in Christ and being of Adam

Biblical:

Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offence of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come. 15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment arose from one transgression resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift arose from many transgressions resulting in justification. 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ. 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. 19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. 20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Personal:

  •  We like to know where we fit in
  •  Online IQ test really popular
    • How did I do…
    • We like to know how we measure up
  • Exercise…. Data… for me calorie count
  • Investments….
  • Competition…

Bridge:

  • Eternally we line up with Adam… or with Christ
  • We choose to follow our corrupt nature or find salvation in Christ
  • We will measure Adam vs Christ
  • Humanity vs godlimess
  •
  • \\ Body:*

The Work of Adam(Romans 12-15a, 16a, 17a, 18a, 19a, 20a, 21a.)

Romans 5:12

  • The Reality of his act:
    • Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world,
      • Sin has been around for awhile…
      • Pride… a lack of humility… CS Lewis
      • Self-serving… not God serving… living for choices
      •  1 John 3:8 the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning.
      •  We have talked that a failure to follow God… is to be in direct opposition to him…
      • Isaiah 14:12 "How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! 13 "But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. 14 'I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.'
      • Lucifer’s choice was not about a single event… but who is lord….
      • Adam made that choice… we live with that choice… reverse onus….
      • Genesis 2:17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die."
      • Bad horror movie… spoof
      • Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate.
      • Not a single activity… but the inherent propensity to sin.
      •  The beginning of the pattern…
  • The Reality of his act: When Adam sinned…sin entered the human race

  • The Scope of his act:
    • and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- 13 for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
      •  So death was introduced through sin…
      • The ongoing reality of sin is death…
      • It is a universal principle…
      •  Nobody escapes…
      • Age, disease, accidents all ravage our bodies…
      • The scope is everyone… and everyone dies…

è all sin èall die

      • for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
        • It was a reality…
        • The law made it obvious… (conscience, etc)
        • Ten Commandments
      • No one escapes…
      • All sin… all die…
  •  The Reality of his act: Sin is introduced The Scope of his act: Death spread to everyone, for all had sinned…*

  • The Nature of his act
    • 19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners
      • Like rings from a pond…
      • The nature was one of impact…
      • One that changed our relationship to God
      • It was a change in direction for the human race…
      •
      •
      •
  • The Nature of his act; because one disobeyed… all followed into sin
      •
      •
      •

  •  The Results of his act:
    • Original Corruption:
    • 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offence of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
      •  Death reigned… Adam placed death on the throne… and death reigned…
      •  Even though we did not commit the ‘first’ sin… we still inherit a nature apart from God.
      • DNA to SIN
      •  Even though Adam did not have the law, Adam by his very nature stood in opposition to God.
      • We know that all of creation testifies to God… and we know that our nature is to disobey.
      • So even from Adam to Moses death reigned
      • We do not have the ability not sin… even if we have the possibility
    • Eternal Judgement on the Unsaved
      • 15 But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died,
      • 16 The gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned
      • 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one,
      • 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men
      • 21 so that, as sin reigned in death,
        • In Adam there is eternal punishment
        •  Death has reigned in our nature
        • We are apart from God
        • And because of that we are condemned
        •  In Adam… sin and death reign
        • In Adam we have no hope.
        • In ourselves… in the flesh… in our own nature…
  • The Results of his act:
    • Original Corruption: Imputed Judgement
    • Eternal Judgement on the Unsaved: On all…
        •

  • The Relationship of the Law to the act
    • 20 The Law came in so that the transgression would increase
      •  We had a mirror held up
      •  God’s standard
      • Not that once we knew we did worse…
      • Once we knew… it was obvious…
      • Once we knew… we continued
      • Once we knew…
  •  The Relationship of the Law to the act:
      • God’s law was given to make our sinfulness evident
      •

The Work of Christ… (Romans 15b, 16b, 17b, 18b, 19b, 20b, 21b.)

      •  Through the grace of God… Jesus Christ was given… to all… GRACE Intro
      •    2 Timothy 1:10 but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
      •  Jesus broke the power of sin and death…
      • The scope of the offer of the gospel is the world…
      • John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
      • The offer of grace… the power of the sacrifice of Christ… is all of the world.
  • The Scope of His act - world
      •

    • 18b even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men.
      •  All have the offer…
      •  To all men… to everyone…
      • Through the sacrifice of Christ…
      •  1 Timothy 2:3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
      •  The Scope of His Act… to all the World and to everyone…
      •   Blanket and Personal
      •

  • The Nature of His act
    • 19b even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.
      •  If Adams actions were rings in a pond… sending ripples of sinfulness… *  Jesus, in his obedience to the Father… through his loving sacrifice…. His holiness… floods us with righteousness.
      •  Adam introduces us to sinfulness
      • Christ introduces us to righteousness
  • The Nature of His act
      •
      •

        • Salvation By Grace, Through Faith Alone
        •  Made right before God… by the free gift of God… through trusting in God
        •  Through Adam we have our initiation into Sin…
        • Through Christ we have justification before God

    • Sanctification:
      • 17 b much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.
        • Not only are we made right before God…
        • We are seen as holy… and we are being made holy…
        •  the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ… we will live life in Christ… being transformed into his likeness…. Clothed in his righteousness…
        •
        •
        •

    • Glorification:
      • 21b even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
        • To believe in Christ is to be justified… to be made holy, sanctified and to ultimately be glorified… *  NAU John 17:22 "The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one, just as We are one;
        •  We will spend eternity… wrapped in the glory of God…
  •  The Results of His act
    • Justification: Sanctified*
    • Glorified
        •
  • The relationship of Sin to this act
    • 20b but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more
      •  Under the law… sin became more evident… more condemning…
      •  Under grace… it becomes more and more evident the love of God, his compassion and mercy…
      • 42b When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?"43 Simon answered and said, "I suppose the one whom he forgave more."
