· 3 viewsThe annointed children of God have a story to tell, a testimony of the work of God in our lives, that needs to be told. The encouragement here by implication from John is that we should confess Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of the One true God who has promised us eternal life.

Review last week’s message briefly. Antichrist and antichrists. We watchful and wary of the false teachers and their false teaching, which can and will lead some who claim to be Christians to become antichrists.
We have been anointed by the Holy One. The idea of being anointed is not necessarily one that we have first hand knowledge of. Anointing is something that was done in the ancient jewish culture. A father or leader would take oil and pour it over a person’s head, to symbolize their blessing being poured out on that individual for a particular role or task. For instance, David was anointed as king of Israel by the prophet Samuel. Here we are told that those who accept Christ by faith have been anointed by God. They have been blessed with a knowledge and understanding of Him and the Gospel of Peace. They have also been sanctioned by Him to abide in the knowledge of Him and in Him.
But there is GOOD NEWS, for those who are in Christ Jesus.
20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.
21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.
24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.
25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
26 I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
27 But the anointing that you received from him abides in you, and you have no need that anyone should teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about everything, and is true, and is no lie—just as it has taught you, abide in him.
1 John 2:20-27
Go back to the beginning of the passage I just read. Look at the first phrase that we read just now.
It begins with the words But you… This signifies that it is in contrast to what had just been said.
But You have been ANOINTED!
This had significant meaning
Anointed= Supernaturally Sanctioned and Appointed
Anointed= Supernaturally Sanctioned and Appointed
We have been anointed by the Holy One. The idea of being anointed is not necessarily one that we have first hand knowledge of.
Anointing is something that was done in the ancient jewish culture. A father or spiritual leader would take oil and pour it over a person’s head, to symbolize a blessing being poured out on that individual for a particular role or task. For instance, David was anointed as king of Israel by the prophet Samuel.
Here we are told here in 1 John, that those who accept Christ by faith have been anointed by God. Then John goes on to explain or reiterate that we have been blessed with an effectual knowledge and understanding of Him and the Gospel of Peace.
This blessing is not a covering poured down over us, it is something that permeates our soul. We are indwelt by God’s Spirit which guides us and enlightens us to the truths of Scripture.
We have also been sanctioned by Him to abide in the knowledge of Him and in Him.
Oida is the greek word used in the original language that is translated “knowledge” This is the kind of knowledge that we have.
It is the same word that the disciples used in when they lacked understanding of the meaning of Christ’s words
18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.”
They knew Jesus said the words “a little while”. But they confessed that they did not know “oidamen” or comprehend what He was really communicating.
Here in , the writer says he is writing to them because they know, they comprehend, they understand the TRUTH.
20 But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you all have knowledge.
21 I write to you, not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and because no lie is of the truth.
1 John 2:20-21

1 John 2:21
This is one of many benefits that we have recieved from God, through the Holy Spirit.

The Holy One
The Holy One
It is God the Father, who has sanctioned us, appointed us, and blessed us and endowed us with (The Holy Spirit) who gives us an understanding of His grace, mercy and love. He has poured out on us a comprehension of Himself and the Son by His Spirit, to us, who are His children.
He has given us the (The Spirit of Wisdom) knowledge that His Son, is indeed The Anointed One, THE Christ!
Christ= The Anointed Christians= the anointed
22 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son.
1 John 2:22-23
The Antichrist
The Antichrist
Denying that Jesus is the Christ (Anointed One) He denies that Jesus is the promised one of God and He therefore denies the Father.
Do you see the direct contrast here? Antichrist and antichrists versus Christ and christs. We who are anointed by the Holy Spirit to comprehend and believe the Word of God are christs. We are little Christs.
BUT . . . denying Son to be who Scripture declares Him to be or the denying the Father and His Word is denying both! This is what the antichrists and Antichrist are guilty of.
John recorded the words of Christ in regard to this in his Gospel
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.”
9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.
11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
Christ made it very clear, that He was truly God and truly man. This is the TRUTH that John was defending. The Gnostics and possibly other false teachers were saying that Jesus was not the God Man, rather he was merely a good man, upon whom the Spirit rested for a short time, just like the prophets of old, but that was not the case and the false teachers, some of whom had been a part of their fellowship/church were antichrists.
23 No one who denies the Son has the Father. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

24 Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.

Do you recognize that you have been anointed by God the Father, with the Holy Spirit, who indwells each and every believer.?
We have been given knowledge and spiritual discernment as well as gifts, that enable us and endow us for the work to which we have been called. Stand firm in the faith, be encouraged, and listen carefully to the voice of God, through His Word by His Spirit.
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
