ROMANS 9: 6-33

*His Promise, His Purpose, His Revelation*

*Secular:*

* I Love Speeding Ticket Stories   

* Rarely do people deserve them

* Rarely is it their fault

* We get all defensive talking about it…

* Why don’t they go after real criminals

* Funny thing… we like Justice and consistency when it protects us.. when it serves us…

*  We love God’s Word when it promises us stuff….

Good stuff

*  We struggle when His Word challenges us…

* Israel has been the favoured child amongst all nations….

But Israel is more about heart and faith than nationality

* Israelites weren’t really warm to the idea of others in the covenant… others as the children of God…

*Biblical:*

9:6-33

His Promise

8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.

His Purpose

16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.

His Revelation

25 As He says also in Hosea, "I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,' AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'…

His Word

 

33 just as it is written, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED."…

* * It is hard sometimes….

Lots of times….

To let God be God*

* * Read his Word… accept his Word....*

* *Without manipulating it…*

* *Without massaging it*

* *Accept it (orthodoxy -tested against others and history)*

* *Apply it….

Live it…*

* * Easier to make it fit me!*

* *Israel** to hard to accept Christ…*

* *Upset their systems*

* *Allow gentiles*

* *Fulfilled Messiah… (new God)*

*Bridge: *

* * We live in a world bent on making God fit….*

* * Changing, rereading, misapplying his Nature….*

* *Others redesigning Him….*

* *We are benefactors of his Grace*

* *We are subject to his Sovereign Word*

* *He initiates the relationship in Grace*

* *We need to hear his Promise*

* *We need to understand his Purpose*

* *We need to honour his Revelation*

His Promise…

Romans 9:6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed.

For they are not all Israel who are descended from Israel; 7 nor are they all children because they are Abraham's descendants, but: "THROUGH ISAAC YOUR DESCENDANTS WILL BE NAMED." 8 That is, it is not the children of the flesh who are children of God, but the children of the promise are regarded as descendants.

9 For this is the word of promise: "AT THIS TIME I WILL COME, AND SARAH SHALL HAVE A SON." 10 And not only this, but there was Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God's purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, "THE OLDER WILL SERVE THE YOUNGER." 13 Just as it is written, "JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED."

* Funny Paul has to answer ask the questions that haven’t been asked yet….

(He just shared his heart for Israel… they question…has the word of God failed).

* Paul explains….

Not everyone grows up and hears the word, lives the Jewish life, shares the family tree.

- Becomes a devout Jew… inheritor of the promises of Abraham.

* Paul was correcting the prevailing idea that Jews challenged the church with…  why wouldn’t we get it if it is true?

If God was calling he would call us and we would answer… we would know!

* Ever explain something TRUE to your spouse… and they didn’t get it… it is not mechanical…

*  Faith isn’t mechanical… Paul uses some examples…

* Abraham’s first child was Ishmael…

* Isaac was the inheritor of the promise…

* With his Children…

* Esau was to be born first….

* Jacob was the younger who was served…

* The message… God is sovereign… 

*  In his Mercy the Father sent his Son…

* And calls to himself a people.

* Gal 3:6-7 tells us the truth… that failure of the Jews to Recognize the Messiah was not a failure of God… It was a failure of the Jews to recognize God.

“Hear Truth”

* For all who are Children of Faith are children of the promise… Galatians 3:6 Even so Abraham BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.

7 Therefore, be sure that it is those who are of faith who are sons of Abraham.

* 1 Corinthians 1:9 God is faithful, through whom you were called into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

* *His promise is to all whom He Sovereignly calls…*

* Regardless of race… or past… nationality… or lifestyle

* Whether WE like or not… (we benefited)

Application:

* Trust God

* Open to those He Brings

* Life

* Path

* Place

* Not closed

14 What shall we say then?

There is no injustice with God, is there?

May it never be! 15 For He says to Moses, "I WILL HAVE MERCY ON WHOM I HAVE MERCY, AND I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON WHOM I HAVE COMPASSION." 16 So then it does not depend on the man who wills or the man who runs, but on God who has mercy.

17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "FOR THIS VERY PURPOSE I RAISED YOU UP, TO DEMONSTRATE MY POWER IN YOU, AND THAT MY NAME MIGHT BE PROCLAIMED THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE EARTH."

18 So then He has mercy on whom He desires, and He hardens whom He desires.

19 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault?

For who resists His will?" 20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God?

The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it?

21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?

22 What if God, although willing to demonstrate His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction?

23 And He did so to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us, whom He also called, not from among Jews only, but also from among Gentiles.
