Being thankful is remembering

3:5-7 Remembering your old self and what you were - Who we were without God
3:5 You were a slave to sin: Put to death these things
Fornication - Sexual immorality
Uncleanness - impurity
Passion
Evil desire
Covetousness, which is idolatry
3:6 You were a condemned prisoner under wrath of God
3:7 You were living a sinful lifestyle
A life that leads to disappointment and death
A life that leaves your desires unsatisfied
3:8-11 Remembering the new self birthed at the moment of your salvation - Who we are now by God’s grace
3:8 A new self that is different: Put away
Anger -
Wrath
Malice
Blasphemy - slander
Filthy language - obscene
3:9 The new self is set free from the Devil: Be truthful to each other

Relationships free of lies
Lying was a characteristic of the old self and what it practiced
3:10 The new self is being made into the image of Christ
The new self is renewed by knowledge
The goal is to renew it to look like the image willed by the creator. That image would be Christ
3:11 The new self has it all it needs and wants in Christ alone
Greek or Jew
Circumcised or uncircumcised
Bararian or Scythian
Slave or free

Thankfulness for being part of God’s family

Longsuffering
3:13 Be patient with others and forgiving
3:14 Put on love

Thankfulness is to be expressed

Thankfulness is to be directed to the Father

Unbelief always produces an unthankful heart
Tendency to forget
Visible acts to remember
1:18 Their ingratitude is a result of holding down the truth
1:19 They refused to allow the their conscience to convince them about God
1:20 The refused to allow the evidence of creation reveal to them the attributes of God
1:21 The chose to reject God and refused to honor Him
1:22 Their choice led them to believe they were wise in reality they were fools
1:23 Their foolishness led them to create their own gods
1:24 Their choice led God to forsake them to their own desires
1:25 Their choice resulted in self-worship

Forgetfulness can lead to ingratitude
