Immiscible: It's Who Jesus Is.
INTRODUCTION
ILL- Saturday football - you can see their loyalty by the color of their clothes.
We brand ourselves and are proud doing it.
Then when it comes to Christ we want to blend into the world.
Jesus is separate from the world- He is holy- set apart
He is wanting this to be true of his disciples as well.
Jesus prays this prayer.
READ
John 17:1–5 ESV
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.
Pray
Glory- proof that Jesus is separate from the world.
3 Types of Glory at Play in this Passage. (Boice)

Honor

Worthy of Honor (The glory of Jesus’ earthly ministry and before.)
, ,   Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!     Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah
Psalm 24:8 ESV
Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!
Psalm 24:8 ESV
Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle!
Psalm 24:10 ESV
Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory! Selah
Linked to God’s attributes- love, truth, holiness, grace, power, knowledge etc.
Jesus, by his work on earth, revealed the essential characteristics of the Father. The disciples “beheld his glory” () by seeing God’s character through Jesus.
Ultimately fulfilled in the cross- glorification - In John the cross and resurrection are connected.

Shekinah Glory (The glory of Jesus had before incarnation)

Outward/visible manifestation of God’s presence- usually through light.
There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”
Psalm 4:6 ESV
There are many who say, “Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of your face upon us, O Lord!”
for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them.
Psalm 44:3 ESV
for not by their own sword did they win the land, nor did their own arm save them, but your right hand and your arm, and the light of your face, for you delighted in them.
Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.
Psalm 104:1–2 ESV
Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent.
Moses’ face in
not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. 14 But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. 15 Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts.
2 Corinthians 3:13–15 ESV
not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts.
Light over the tabernacle at night.
Shekinah was a new word the Jews introduced after the Old Testament writings were complete to distinguish this type of glory.

Our Glory

We share in Christ’s glory.
All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
John 17:10 ESV
All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them.
The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,
John 17:22 ESV
The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,
Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
John 17:24 ESV
Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.
We are to be filled with His glory now (work of the Holy Spirit in our life- context of )
We are to experience his glory later. Our glorification.
5 Reasons Jesus is Glorified

Time (1a)

It is time- the hour has come.
Fullness of time (birth)
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
Galatians 4:4 ESV
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law,
Same idea for his death. - seen language several times last few chapters of John.
ILL- teaching kids to wait-

God (1b)

It is about God’s glory.
It is Jesus’ prayer that his death brings glory to God.
However God blesses Jesus is ultimately a blessing to God.
Does our prayers reflect the desire that we want God’s glory for anything he does through us?

Authority (2)

Flesh= earthly life- physical life.
He has authority over the physical to give it spiritual life.
He has the authority to change us from one form to another (not mix)
Eternal Life
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Relationship (3)

Know God/Jesus (relationship, not knowledge of)
to know God and that we do not compare to him.
General knowledge, specific knowledge, personal knowledge. None are enough.
To Know God and Jesus in a relationship that was made possible because of what Jesus did for us on the cross.
ILL- Oil cannot have a relationship with water because they cannot mix.

Reward (4)

Finish Line
Run the race to win.
Return from Suffering
CONCLUSION

Does your glory bring God glory?
