B. Where We’re Going
a. Illust. Laurie prophesied week / so ago
1. word was encouragement 2 draw nearer 2 God, spoken as if by God
2. Does that make her a prophet, should we go around calling her Prophet Laurie?? lol
b. what is a prophet; what’s their purpose; is this role a relevant spiritual leadership gift 2day?
1. That’s what we’ll be talking about 2day
i. let’s look at our...
C. Main Text
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
D. Prayer
E. Context
a. Spiritual leadership gifts tend to be spiritual gift packages
1. like a vacation package: includes airfare, hotel, rental car, etc.
i. In the same way, these spiritual leadership gifts bundle multiple spiritual gifts 2gether
b. We aren’t all called 2 be prophets…not all called to the same ministries
1. We need ea. other operating in the roles we r called & empowered by the H.S.
c. Like, the Apostles, Jesus gave the prophets as a gift to the church for our good
1. They contribute 2 prepping us 4 doing ministry & bldg up the church
i. Let’s get specific & talk about...
II. BODY
A. The Spiritual Leadership Gift of Apostles
A. The Spiritual Leadership Gift of Prophet (What makes a prophet a prophet?)
a. The Supernatural empowering by the Holy Spirit to see what’s coming or what God is up to
1. To c / perceive; a beholder of visions
2. a Greek scholar said the prophet, “speaks from the impulse of a sudden inspiration, from the light of a sudden revelation at the moment.”
Sumrall, Lester. The Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit . Whitaker House. Kindle Edition.
b. In the OT, the prophet was a divine guide
1. They would speak the judgements o God,
2. articulate divine warning,
3. steer Isr. through God’s promptings, &
4. Anoint new leaders
c. The prophet was once called a Seer
1 sam 9:9
9 (Formerly in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come, let us go to the seer,” for today’s “prophet” was formerly called a seer.)
1. (This was written centuries ago, & yet) It might be said that the prophet is the eyes of the body of Christ
d. The prophet speaks from God & is carried by the Spirit
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Ministry Gifts . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition.
21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
2 Pet 1
The Bible arguably lists 78 OT prophets & prophetesses.
1. Carried here is more than simply being lead by; like being held, supported.
i. Illust. Jesus turned water in2 wine & the servant brought, carried the wine 2 the master o the feast
ii. Illust. have person come up & support my weight (vise versa)
-This is the rel. btwn H.S. & the prophet
B. Prophets tend to operate in gifts such as
a. Simple prophecy (duh)
1. defined as the supernatural utterance frm the H.S. in a known language 4 building up, encouragement, & comfort
b. words of knowledge
1. defined as the supernatural revealing of facts in the mind o God by the H.S.
i. Things that r happening right now
c. words of wisdom
1. defined as the supernatural insight by the Holy Spirit in2 the nature of God’s plan
i. Things that r fixin’ 2 happen / things God’s fixin’ 2 do
d. Distinguishing between spirits
1. defined as the supernatural gift frm the H.S. 2 c / hear in2 the spiritual realm
Word of wisdom: Supernatural revelation by the Spirit of God concerning the divine
acts 11:27-
i. What either the demonic / God is up 2 in the spiritual realm
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Ministry Gifts . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition.
-That’s what a prophet is; what a prophet does; I mean what is...
2. folks can operate in these gifts individually & not b a prophet, but...
i. a prophet tends 2 operate in several o these gifts as a kind o package gift set
C. The Prophet’s Role
a. Prophets laid the foundation of the Gospel with the apostles
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,
21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
a. Apostles laid the foundation of the Gospel
Eph
The prophets r regularly seen partnering w/Apostles as foundation layers
(how?)
1. Prophets are empowered by the Spirit to understand God’s mysteries & knowledge
2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.
i. This was written primarily 2 show the need 4 love 2 b motivation 4 flowing in spiritual gifts but,
-we do get incites in2 what a prophet does!
-Prophets r empowered by the spirit to c in2 God’s mysteries & knowledge
ii. what mysteries & knowledge?
what mysteries & knowledge?
ii. The mysteries & knowledge are the Gospel
4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ,
5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.
6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.
1 cor 13:2?
-(preach the Gospel)
Eph 3:4-
iii. The mysteries & knowledge r also how God’s going 2 invade “man’s space” w/ “God’s Space”
-This is the point o Revelation
-Thus, Revelation is a prophetic book, among other things
*It reveals God’s nature, God’s plan o salvation in the midst o suffering, & what the result of God’s mission is (New Heaven & New Earth)
*continuing w/the prophet’s role:
b. The prophet equips the church for ministry & building itself up
b. the prophet equips the church for ministry & building itself up
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers,
12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
how?
1. The prophet equips the Church for ministry by Preparing us for what is coming
how?
27 Now in these days prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch.
28 And one of them named Agabus stood up and foretold by the Spirit that there would be a great famine over all the world (this took place in the days of Claudius).
29 So the disciples determined, every one according to his ability, to send relief to the brothers living in Judea.
i. Here Agabus was given a word of wisdom so that the Church could see what was coming!
-W/ this info, Church leadership could decide what the Church response would b
*Here we c that the prophet acted as the eyes, but didn’t tell the Church what 2 do about that info
2. The prophet equips the Church for building itself up by Encouraging & strengthening us
Sumrall, Lester. The Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit . Whitaker House. Kindle Edition.
32 And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many words.
Acts 15:32
(If time)
C. Jesus operated in the gifts & office of prophet
a. Jesus told of God’s plan to tear down the old sacrificial temple system
2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
1. Jesus spoke that word of wisdom sometime in A.D. 30(ish)
i. In A.D. 70, the romans attacked & destroyed the temple & left it just the way Jesus described
b. Jesus told of God’s plan of salvation through suffering
b.
Sumrall, Lester. The Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit . Whitaker House. Kindle Edition.
31 And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
d. He told of God’s plan for Jesus’ return
c. Jesus told of God’s plan for His return
Matt 25:31-32
31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne.
32 Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
(the prophet here)…cause the office is still relevant
