Introduction- Thank You Note- A new way of responding to “How Are You Doing?”

Illustration:
365 Thank yous: The Year a Simple Act of Daily Gratitude Changed My Life by John Kralik
By the end of February, when someone asked, “How are you?,” instead of reporting the latest development in one of my struggles, I noted something for which I was grateful, even if it was only making payroll that week or keeping my business open. Often I mentioned that my youngest was doing well in school. She was always doing well in school, but it had just occurred to me to enjoy what a relief and a delight this success was to me. The new way of responding to “How are you doing?” happened unconsciously, but after I noticed it, I decided it was something I should keep doing. From now on, the way I would answer this question would be by noting something for which I was grateful. I found myself using words like thankful, even blessed, though I was not a great believer in God or a very good churchgoer.

Kralik, John. A Simple Act of Gratitude (p. 46). Hachette Books. Kindle Edition.
The instinctual response to negative experiences sets off cycles of avoidance that feed the beast of depression. That’s when it’s necessary to work against instinct.
Tho interrupt the cycle of shutdown, one needs both an attitude o hope and the willingness to we expend effort to do things differently.
Illustration: The Depression Cure: The 6-Step Program to Beat Depression without Drugs by Stephen S. Ilardi
“Blames modern lifestyles for what he sees as an emerging epidemic of depression. He cites people who live in traditional hunter-gatherer communities are much less likely to be depressed. There’s risk of an evolutionary mismatch between modern lie and the environment our minds and bodies evolved to live in.”
Tho interrupt the cycle of shutdown, one needs both an attitude of hope and the willingness to expend effort to do things differently.
Most obviously, we should minimize exposure to serious adverse experiences like neglect and abuse. Ilardi also recommends increasing intake of omega-3 fats, increasing activity (in order to decrease rumination), engaging in physical exercise, finding sources of social support, increasing sunlight exposure, and improving sleep hygiene. All are proven ways of counteracting pathways of depression.

Transition To Body: David is in the midst of affliction by wicked men (nations)

David starts out with a lot of good words and make you feel good statements of praise to the LORD God,
but make no mistake about it David is going through some difficult times and experiencing some potentially catastrophic challenges.
And I got a sneaky suspicion some of you who are here today...
you are saying don’t mistake me because I’m looking good and smelling good and got a big smile on my face
I do have some issues that I’m dealing with.
I do have some problems
That I need the Lord’s help
Well you are in good company with King David today.
They appear to be getting ahead while the poor are being forgotten
Psalm 9:13–14 ESV
13 Be gracious to me, O Lord! See my affliction from those who hate me, O you who lift me up from the gates of death, 14 that I may recount all your praises, that in the gates of the daughter of Zion I may rejoice in your salvation.
Psalm 9:19–20 ESV
19 Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail; let the nations be judged before you! 20 Put them in fear, O Lord! Let the nations know that they are but men! Selah
They appear to be getting ahead while the poor are being forgotten
Psalm 9:17–18 ESV
17 The wicked shall return to Sheol, all the nations that forget God. 18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten, and the hope of the poor shall not perish forever.
Psalm 9:18
Instead of throwing a pity party, David, who was a man after the LORD God’s own heart, does something that may seem awfully strange for many of us in this sanctuary today...

John 1:

Transition To Close

Illustration: Ingratitude
Many years ago, a boat was wrecked in a storm on Lack Michigan at Evanston, Illinois. Students from Northwestern University formed themselves into rescue teams. One student, Edward Spencer, saved seventeen people from the sinking ship. when he was carried exhausted to his room, he asked, “Did I do my best? Do you think I did my best?”
Years later, R. A. Torrey was talking about this incident at a meeting in Los Angles, and a man in the audience called out that Edward Spencer was present. Dr. Torrey invited Spencer to the platform. An old man with white hair slowly climbed the steps as the applause rang. Dr. Torrey asked him if anything in particular stood out in his memory. “Only this, sir,” he replied, “of the seventeen people I saved, not one of them thanked me.”

Hebrews 1:1–4 ESV
1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
Hebrews 1:
But let me tell you the story like the ole school preachers down south would say it...
He sat down!
What did Jesus do to deserve to sit down at the right of the throne of God?
He made purification for sins!
How did he do it?
On one Friday, we call good Friday...
He died...
But three days later, early on Sunday Morning...
He got up...
With all power and authority in His hands...
Not some power
Or little bit of power
But all power
Kind of like Tony Starks new and improved ARC reactor in Iron Man 2
So you get an opportunity to get a heart transplant too..
Do I have a witness...
Let the ole’ school saints sing:
I was sinking deep in sin,   Far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within,   Sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea   Heard my despairing cry, From the waters lifted me,   Now safe am I. Love lifted me! Love lifted me! When nothing else could help,   Love lifted me. Love lifted me! Love lifted me! When nothing else could help,   Love lifted me.
All my heart to Him I give,   Ever to Him I’ll cling, In His blessed presence live,   Ever His praises sing. Love so mighty and so true   Merits my soul’s best songs; Faithful, loving service, too,   To Him belongs.
Souls in danger, look above,   Jesus completely saves; He will lift you by His love   Out of the angry waves. He’s the Master of the sea,   Billows His will obey; He your Savior wants to be—   Be saved today.
Psalm 8:1 ESV
1 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens.
Psalm 8:2–3 ESV
2 Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
Psalm 8:4 ESV
4 what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?
Psalm 8:5 ESV
5 Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
