Jesus Heading to Jerusalem to Face the Cross
Jesus Heading to Jerusalem to Face the Cross
He’s ascending to Jerusalem where He knows suffering and the cross awaits.
Our calling is to deliver this message to others.
Message: Because of what Jesus did — Cross/Resurrection — He sets us free from the bondage of sin and death, and can enjoy forgiveness of sins through faith.
Zebedee’s boys are trying to position themselves to have seats of honor.
Jesus turns this typical worldly idea on it head by declaring that greatness is not from sitting on top of a lesser man, but the great man bearing the lesser on his back.
Being Served — Sinful Man Desires Places of Honor
Being Served — Sinful Man Desires Places of Honor
But, we want places of honor
We want success; pats on the back; “that-a-boys”
By worldly standards we deserve time off, paid vacation, etc.
Schedules keep us from our families
And, then, there are the unruly in our congregations — maybe, even, a Jezabel or two.
Lord, deliver us from this tribulation.
Jesus said that in this world we would have tribulation; He said that we would drink from the cup He chose to drink from.
St. Paul had a messenger of Satan, a thorn in the flesh to torment him.
Some of us have actually been persecuted by others, and Satan using this to cause us to doubt.
What Does Serving Look Like? — Jesus the GREAT Man Bearing the Lesser Men on His Back.
What Does Serving Look Like? — Jesus the GREAT Man Bearing the Lesser Men on His Back.
We were reminded last night that Jesus drank the cup given Him, and He drank every last drop, including the dregs.
Though we are sometimes sifted like wheat, Jesus was betrayed; scourged; nailed to a cross, had a spear shoved into His side, all the while he suffocated to death.
All of this He did for you and me.
Jesus Served You and Me in this way so we can be given the ultimate place of honor —
To be a son
Co-heir with Christ Jesus
A Son — a better seat than at His right or left
So, we prayerfully serve the congregations we’ve been called to, amid the trials / tribulations / even persecution, in the full knowledge Jesus paid the ransom for our sin and short-coming, and is continually carrying us on His back through it all, and all the way home.
God bless you brothers. Remember, you’re not alone. Not only do we have each other to lean on, the One who bore it all for us on the cross now says, “Never will I leave you! Never will I abandon you.”
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
