God is Light Week Three God’s Children Live in the Light

See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Amen and thank the Lord for central heating. For those that do not know me my name is Carson I am the Student Pastor here at SCC and and we are so excited that you are here with us this morning. These past few weeks we have been working our way through the first letter of John. Today we will be starting Chapter 3 and looking at the wisdom that God provides us from verses 1-10.
I want to start off with asking that everyone please close your eyes and think of the worst moment of your life as a child or the worst moment of your child's life.
ok open your eyes hold on to that it will come up later.
This Chapter defines Gods children, not Jesus Christ but us the church

Defining the world is tough.
When I think of the world I think of anything that keeps me from being totally dedicated to Christ. One of my favorites shows growing up was Recess, a tv show that centered around the best time for a kid!! these friends that were all very different pulled hiests and scams and got into a lot of trouble, but at the end of the day thats what they lived for Recess, nothing else. AS a kid I was the same and that might or might not be why I was not the valedictorian of my elementary school, but thats all I lived for was Recess but as an adult my love for recess became more and more strained, with bills, work, life, and everything else going on my love of recess started to become less and less and like our faith we all desire to the best for God, I truly beleive that but because of sin and the world we just cant. We cant live in this world and it not take work to follow Christ, We just cant. If we did then Christ would not have warned us so many times about the dangers of distractions and the world. When we live in the world we start to fade away from Christ.
AS a kids I was the same and that might or might not be why I was not the valedictorian of my elementary school, but thats all I lived for was Recess and because of this clothes ddid not get washed, homework did not get done and everything else seems to just fade away. When we live in the world we start to fade away from Christ. We start to move away from being centered on what He wants for us and start seeing more of what we want.

We now see the issue with living in the world. The little things that sway us from Christ remove us from being children of God. The problem is we are selfish all of us as humans wrapped in sin. But we are selfish.
Scripture backs this up with the parable of the prodigal son
a person who spends money in a recklessly extravagant way....
My wife and I are the most different when it comes to vacations. I am all about sleeping and taking it slow and she wants to cram every waking moment of the day with stuff to do.
Paris Airport fight story..
My wife and I argue about travel all the time and she loves to travel and loves to go where she can, I am one of those people that just want to be home and have a day of quiet.
We are selfish the part that separates us from God, that being sin and if we live by the lawlessness of this world we will always be selfishly seperating ourselves
1 John 3:
Jesus came to make the way, He came to change the direction that we were all headed. We cannot be Children of God without Christ. He did this freely He wanted us so badly that God saw no other way.
Who’s Your Daddy? Are you living everyday serving yourself? Are you selfishly pushing away a love that is so scandalous and reckless that will run after you
1 John 3:10 ESV
By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
Run home to God like the prodigal you are… run home to a God that loves you so much that He still wants you even in the momsnets where you dont even want yourslef.
I wanna close with this story, my dad having to stay with me throough youth group.
fact, Martin Luther even argued that it shouldn’t be in the Bible. Some might say it
contradicts Paul. But when studied closely, it’s evident that James is a book full of
supplemental wisdom to Paul’s writings. It is sometimes called “the Proverbs of the New
Testament” because it faithfully reminds Christians how to live. It takes the abstract idea of
faith and makes it real and actionable in our lives.
These little holes
and twists and gaps in what we believe about faith can manifest themselves in dangerous
ways in the lives of teenagers. This is where we see anxiety and uncertainty, cynicism and
doubt, arrogance and self-righteousness, despair and loneliness, jealousy and
unforgiveness.
In short, while our good works are often praiseworthy in Scripture—pleasing to God and truly good—they do not win for us our heavenly reward.
