INTRODUCTION

The text that beckons our attention is found in the gospel according to . In this passage we look in on an encounter between Jesus and a man who came up to him with a personal request. The subscription is entitled “The Rich Young Ruler”, but nowhere in the text does Mark address him as young; he does, however, address him as rich. Ultimately, this small issue (being rich), becomes the main point of the story. Jesus tells his disciples that it is “easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God (v. 25).
Even his disciples are blown away by the thought and question if anyone at all can be saved. Jesus says to them that in the natural it would be impossible, but not in the divine economy of God. This prompted Peter to remind Jesus that they (the disciples) unlike the recent personality had given up everything to follow Jesus (v 28). Mark and Luke record only this part of Peter’s comment while Matthew has Peter’s remarks extended to ask Jesus “what shall be we have?” (See )
Matthew 19:27 NASB95
Then Peter said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?”
The text is tailored to teach the followers of Christ that the disciples reward is not just realized when they die, but that they enjoy the rewards while they live. The lesson in following Jesus is that “Many who are first will be last and the last, first. This is part of the text that I want to focus our attention on. You are interested today, Aren’t you?
