Introduction

Recap Series
Week 1 - The Son Speaks…
Long ago, God spoke through the prophets and our fathers in dreams visions and various ways.
Now in the last days he speaks through his son, Jesus.
Then went on to describe the Son, so that we would know who we were to be listening to
Today - The Son’s Position
The book of Hebrews is written to just that… Hebrews, Jewish believers in Jesus as the messiah
We talked about not just the power of Jesus, but that he also sits in a position of authority and honor
Because He is Higher
Writer of Hebrews makes argument that the Son is greater than so many others
last week the Angels
but what does that mean to them
Because He is Higher
like us, we can believe that Jesus is the messiah, we can trust in him for salvation without having all theology about who the son is figured out
So the author is writing so that these believers will understand just exactly who this Jesus is and what that means
Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession. He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was in all God’s household. For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house. Now every house is built by someone, but the one who built everything is God. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s household, as a testimony to what would be said in the future. But Christ was faithful as a Son over his household. And we are that household if we hold on to our confidence and the hope in which we boast.
I can ask what you think about Jesus and I will get a lot of different answers
the point of the writer is not just to think about Jesus, but to rightly think about Jesus
there are some things that we do not care what others think about

we talked last week, what we think about Jesus defines our faith

Jesus is the Apostle and High Priest

I am not a greek scholar…
I have this nice computer program that will tell me more information than I can understand about different words in the Bible
I can see very quickly the different translations and the original language, how those words are translated ext…
This comes in very handy for texts like this
there are some words that in english, are very easy to understand and when we read them seems to come across very simple
consider - I think of kind of a generic think about
there is a little more to it, kind of a caution
like a teacher who is giving you notes before a test, telling you, “You might want to take note of this,” or, “You may want to write this down.”
Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession.
so lets stop what we are doing… focus on Jesus
What is an Apostle?
Definition - Sent one
12 Apostles - or disciples… what is the difference?
Apostles… the twelve that were sent out by Jesus in charge of the church, or group of believers that remained after Jesus ascended into Heaven
There are theological debates about weather Paul is one of the Apostles, or if it is Matthias that was to take Judas’ place as a part of the 12
Matthias was selected by casting lots in
Paul had his Damascus road experience in
Disciples are followers or student of a teacher
there were many who followed Jesus that listened to his teaching, you might remember in the gospels Jesus sending out 72 on a mission trip
all apostles are disciples, but not all disciples are apostles
fingers and thumbs
Jesus is not one of the sent ones, but THE ONE sent from Heaven to Earth to rescue a people
High Priest
Who is the High Priest ad what does the high priest do
What does the high priest do
go into the holy of holies
tie the rope around to make sure that he could get out if he died
this is why the book of Leviticus is so important
all the rules and regulations for the priests that we think are so monotonous and boring
they define the qualifications of what would need to be to go into the holy of holies
make sacrifice for sin
this was not a permanent sacrifice, this would have to be done each year
Jesus is 100% God and 100% man at the same time
the only one who was able to enter the holy of holies and remain there
the high priest of the OT would have to go in, make the sacrifices and get out
nobody could stay in the presence of the Lord
the only one who was able to make a permanent sacrifice for our sins
Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the devil—15 and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring. 17 Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement, for the sins of the people. 18 For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.
atonement or atone - propitiate - removal of offense from the offended party’s consideration

it is the act by which God and man are brought back together
Consider Jesus… Our Apostle and High Priest

Jesus is greater than Moses

I can ask what you think about Jesus and I will get a lot of different answers
the point of the writer is not just to think about Jesus, but to rightly think about Jesus
there are some things that we do not care what others think about
illustration - Heather told the Youth Group I was a MU fan, it backfired on her
we talked last week, what we think about Jesus defines our faith
the Jewish people hold Moses in high esteem, as they should
the deliverer that God sent to free the people from Egypt
parted the red sea, spoke with God, was the law giver, writer of the pentateuch…
if you were to claim, that anyone is even close to the stature of Moses, you better have a strong case
We compare past athletes with current, past theologians with current and argue over who is the greatest
who is the GOAT… Jimmy and I were talking about Travis Kelce vs Tony Gonzales, who was better and why?
He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was in all God’s household. For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house. Now every house is built by someone, but the one who built everything is God. Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s household, as a testimony to what would be said in the future.

Both were faithful
Moses was considered the most faithful of all of God’s household
Not so with my servant Moses; he is faithful in all my household.
Wow! Can you imagine being called the most faithful in all of God’s household
Household means the house and members
why is that important -
Moses is a member of the house that Jesus ran and built
Moses received his rewards for the things that he did on earth and have laid them down at the feet of Jesus
Jesus is the builder, owner and sustainer of the household
a member of the house will never be greater than the one who built it
Jesus is not just another character in the Bible
I always hesitate calling them Bible stories… I am afraid that we start believing that they are fairytales
No matter what great things that you do in your life, at the end, every knee will bow, every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord
not Moses… he is doing the same thing
not other great men and women of our day…
not any of us…

Jesus is our confidence and hope

The heart of a preacher…
I pray for you and for me, I want to deliver messages to you that God will use in your life
I want you to know him more, trust him more and live for him more
I have delivered some ok sermons… I have delivered some bad sermons
I have had several sermons where as I preach them, I feel as if they are bad,
I know I am my own worst critic, or at least I hope
it never seems to fail, if I deliver one that I think is awful Heather will tell me that she really enjoyed that one
then it is like an argument breaks out of me defending my point of why I thought it was bad
it is always because I am looking at myself…
I am not saying that a preacher should not work to be better at his craft,
but far to often, when I am being over critically of myself, it is because I realize, that I relied on myself, not God
I believe we all do that at different points and different aspects of our lives
places where we really are depending on ourselves and our abilities
We believe in God, we trust God, but we go out with an attitude of, “I’ve got this.”
But Christ was faithful as a Son over his household. And we are that household if we hold on to our confidence and the hope in which we boast.
it is so easy to second guess somebody when you are not the one in charge
arm chair quarterback...
we love to do it in other peoples lives, though we do not sit in their house around their table and really do not know everything they are dealing with
Moses was great, but Jesus is the one in charge, the one that is all knowing, the one that built the household that Moses is a part of
Our only response to the position of the Son is exaltation, is to worship him
our lives should be one of worship
Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.
Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.
Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
Our Confidence
confidence = boldness
the more you worship and exalt the Lord, the more confident you become in him
not just in the teaching of him, meaning your understanding
but living for him in tough times and good
this is not just a once a week event…
you cannot exercise once per week and expect your body to be in shape for a marathon
how many of you have ever eaten at a restaurant and never went back because the meal did not sustain you for a week.
but we hear people use that excuse all the time when it comes to churches… I am not getting fed
we worship, study his word and exalt his name and the more that we do this, the more that we trust and realize that he is our only hope!
Are you a member of that household
if our confession is real… parable of soils
The writer is saying, if your confidence in truly in Christ, not yourself
You are a member of that
not your abilities, not your performance, not the task list that you have completed
if you are holding on to Christ and nothing else, then he is your confidence and hope
and nothing can take you from the arms of Christ
Jesus said that He will not lose one that the Father has given him
tells us that nothing can remove us from the love of Christ
