Acts 2:38 NIV

The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1 Corinthians 12:7 NIV
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 1
spiritual gifts come from the Holy Spirit
it is for the common good of the people of God
the gifts are given to each one of us
these gifts are not in competition but are compatible with each other
Natural Talents
a talent is an ability that is there at birth as part of our makeup
a talent can be developed through discipline and training
God wants us to use our natural talents for His purpose
Spiritual Gifts
spiritual gifts are divine in origin and divine in receiving them
solely comes from the Holy Spirit
there is no man aspect to it - we cannot buy it or find it on the breakfast table when we wake up
1 Corinthians 12:8–11 NIV
To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
1 Corinthians 12:8-11
there are many gifts as listed in this passage: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles
there are speaking gifts: prophecy, discernment, tongues, interpretation
Purpose of the Gifts
Ephesians 4:12–13 NIV
to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Ephesians 4:12 NIV
to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
equip his people for works of service OUR SERVICE
build the body of Christ OUR CHURCH
reach unity with Jesus in faith and knowledge OUR SELVES
become mature in the fullness of Christ OUR WALK
Distribution of the Gifts
Holy Spirit gives a gift to a disciple as He sees fit
the gift is perfect for us
this spiritual gift is far greater than any natural talent
it has the full power and purpose of God behind its giving and use
Abuse of the Gifts
Not Using
1 Timothy 4:14 NIV
Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
1 Timothy 4:14
we all have a gift given to us
it is there but it has to be activated by us
we need to be open to the work of the Spirit inside us, in our spirit
we need to use the gift, to employ it in the moment
as we use it then it grows within us
2. Using Wrong Gift
so easy to become jealous of another gifting
sometimes we think that prophecy is better than administration
sometimes we try to heal because of the acclaim healers get
use of the gift is to honour Jesus and to progress his church
using the wrong gift makes it all about us
Acts
Acts 19:15–16 NIV
One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
3. Not Using Your Gift Properly
we can neglect our gifts
we can glorify in our gifts rather than honour Jesus
we can put our flesh over our gifts: use it for money or position or power
Reason for the Gifts
Ephesians 4:12–15 NIV
to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
become mature in the fullness of Christ OUR WALK
reach unity with Jesus in faith and knowledge OUR SELVES
equip his people for works of service OUR SERVICE
build the body of Christ OUR CHURCH
