Pneumatology
1 Thessalonians 5:19–23 NASB95
19 Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise prophetic utterances. 21 But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every form of evil. 23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Before I began to deal with the working the Holy Spirit our life I want to quickly deal with the human person.
Do not quench the Spirit.
1 Thessalonians 5:20 NASB95
20 do not despise prophetic utterances.
Do not despise prophecies.
Do not despise prophecies.
Test all things; hold fast what is good.
Abstain from every form of evil.
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Before I began to deal with the working the Holy Spirit our life I want to quickly deal with the human person.
God has created a being after His likeness and his image.
God is 3 parts. Father Son and Holy Spirit.
Man created after his image is 3 parts as well..
Body Soul and Spirit.
Watchman Nee says in his book “The Spiritual Man,”
The body is he “world-consciousness,” the soul is the “self-consciousness,” and the Spirit “God-consciousness.”
The body enable man to communicate with the physical world.
The soul comprises that part in man known as the intellect, which makes man’s existence possible. That pat of love generates affection toward other human beings or objects.
The body houses our sences and the soul produces them and generate infomantion from them
Our personality is not found in our body but in our souls.
Lastly the spirit of man.
The spirit is the part which communicates with God. With this part man worship and connects to God.
Now lets go back to the soul.
I love what watchman says here.
“the soul is the meeting point. Here the spirit and the body join.”
So remember it is in the soul that things are processed.
Now watch this. Look at
Romans 8:6–9 KJV 1900
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
So notice here the battle over and in the mind.
To be carrally mined fleshly lead by our bodies or to be spiritual minded lead and controlled by the Spirit of Christ Jesus.
One leads to life and peace the other leads to death.
Noel Jones in his book “the battle of the mind” asked the question. Why is the mind the battlefield fot conflict between flesh and spirit?
Where is your mind? In your soul
I think Charles Spurgen answers this question best when he says,
“Consider how precious a soul must be, when both God and the devil are after it. You never heard that the devil was after a kingdom, did you? No, he is not so foolish; he knows it would not be worth his winning; he is never after that; but he is always after souls. You never heard that God was seeking after a crown, did you! No, he thinketh little of dominions; but he is after souls every day; his Holy Spirit is seeking his children; and Christ came to save souls. Do you think that which hell craves for, and that which God seeks for, is not precious?”
Stephan Charnock says that the son the greatest glory of this lower world.
Whatever controls your soul through your mind controls you.
Now remember that your body soul and spirit are connected. And hanging in between these two world. Carnal and fleshy is our soul.
The devil wants your soul.
God want your soul.
The devil tries to draw you by your flesh your 5 senses
The lord tries to draw you by your spirit.
Which side will win. Which ever side you feed.
My heart and flesh cries out for the living God.
Lord you got to help me my flesh and trying to take me straight to Hell.
And here goes all the images. TV, radio, Internet, billboards, music.
Are we doomed? We are living in this world how do we disconnect from the things in it..
Remember our texted
Don’t quench the spirit God will sanctify our body soul and spirit. Wholly completely
The spirit will help us.
I can hear the Lord saying
John 15:19 NASB95
19 “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.
If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world
I choose you out of the world. Into a new kingdom.
So here we go the Holy Spirit starts the work by joining us with Christ.
Romans 6:5 NASB95
5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
This is the beginning of the work of sanctification.
Which is conforming to the image of Christ.
I was ask not long ago by someone what this meant.
I said
to sanctify means to make holy and to set apart... sanctification come after receiving our propitiation (Jesus) and after justification (which is the beginning of Salvation) Sanctification is a work of the spirit through the power of grace that brings forth purify and conforms us to the image of the Man Jesus (who is alive and a real man).. This is not about law but the spirit.. it is the thing that makes the Christian different and distinct from the sinner in the world.. and it is not an option it is a must to see Jesus in this age and the age to come...
2 Corinthians 3:5–6 NASB95
5 Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, 6 who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:17 NASB95
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.
2 Corinthians 3:17–18 NASB95
17 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.
Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, 6who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2 cor 3:17-
Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.
Look at
2 Corinthians 6:16–18 NASB95
16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them; And I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 17 “Therefore, come out from their midst and be separate,” says the Lord. And do not touch what is unclean; And I will welcome you. 18 “And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me,” Says the Lord Almighty.
And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you ◙ are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will dwell in them
And walk among them.
I will be their God,
And they shall be My people.”
17Therefore
“Come out from among them
And be separate, says the Lord.
Do not touch what is unclean,
And I will receive you.”
18 “I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.”
Sanctification is separation and separation lead to sonship.
Come out and be separate and I will be your father and you will be my sons and daughters.
How do we come out? How do we know the way to go?
Romans 8:14 NASB95
14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
14For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
The Father draws, Jesus seeks and finds, and the Holy Spirit does the work of adoption and place us as sons right in the presence of the Father
The Father sends His Son to gain sons and His Son sends His Spirit to make sons.
Ephesians 1:3–5 NASB95
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
)
As one is entering into sonship, which is being led by God’s Spirit, God the Father does a work in his heart ridding him from fear and bondage and giving him a pure love for the Father.
Romans 8:15 NASB95
15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”
)
)
So how is this done?
Remember the spirit joins us to Christ.
Romans 6:5 NASB95
5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Romans 8:16–17 NASB95
16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
Romans 6:16–17 NASB95
16 Do you not know that when you present yourselves to someone as slaves for obedience, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin resulting in death, or of obedience resulting in righteousness? 17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,
ro 8:16:17
At adoption and at rebirth the Holy spirit comes in and does the work of Regeneration.
Lets look at
John 3:3–15 NASB95
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 “That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 “Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear the sound of it, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things? 11 “Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know and testify of what we have seen, and you do not accept our testimony. 12 “If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 “No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. 14 “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; 15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
john 3:3-15
3Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”
10Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our witness. 12If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man ◙ who is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15that whoever believes in Him should ◙ not perish but have eternal life.
You got be born again to get into heaven
Not of the flesh. You cant be carnal you have to be spiritual. Sanitation.
The wind blows where it wishes. So is everyone born of the spirit meaning that they live lives led by the spirit sonship
Snake on a pole. The Holy Spirit keeps our gaze on Jesus.
Now let me just say that Regeneration starts in 3 places
At birth
Resurrection
And
Creation
Now why did I read john 3 because you see the work of regeneration at rebirth of the believer.
Resurrection look at
Romans 6:13 NASB95
13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.
Now your flesh because of the Spirit is alive from the dead as an instrument of righteous.
No longer trying to take you to hell but express what is being processed in our soul by the spirit
And in creation
Ephesians 2:10 NASB95
10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
Differences exist between nature and personality. God takes us, not simply our nature. Upon rebirth, we keep our own nature, the seed of Adam, and we receive the life of Christ (including Christ Himself) and become the residence of the Holy Spirit. "Making alive" doesn't mean transforming our nature. We partake of the divine nature. indicates that it is not an improvement but a creation.
Then the holy spirit places a seal upon us
Ephesians 4:30 NASB95
30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Song of Solomon 8:6–7 NASB95
6 “Put me like a seal over your heart, Like a seal on your arm. For love is as strong as death, Jealousy is as severe as Sheol; Its flashes are flashes of fire, The very flame of the Lord. 7 “Many waters cannot quench love, Nor will rivers overflow it; If a man were to give all the riches of his house for love, It would be utterly despised.”
And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Songs 8:6-7
Set me as a seal upon your heart,
As a seal upon your arm;
For love is as strong as death,
Jealousy as cruel as ◙ the grave;
Its flames are flames of fire,
◙ A most vehement flame.
7 Many waters cannot quench love,
Nor can the floods drown it.
I want to connect the last 2 things together that the Holy Spirit Does.
Gives us eternal security and zeal for Jesus.
Because you cannot have eternal security outside of the Holy Spirit.
If we commit our lives to being joined to Jesus and looking to him the God promises us that he will.
Romans 5:5 NASB95
5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
If we quench this spirit or we grieve this spirit. We are in danger. Because the devil will use our flesh to take us straight to Hell.
But we are not after the flesh but after the spirit.
