INTRODUCTION:
1. Do you know the God of Peace?
A. Week one, we must pursue the things which make for peace.
Romans 14:19 NKJV
19 Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify another.
1.
1. This means we have to chase after peace and catch it.
B. Week two, we must put to death the things that bring the wrath of God.
Colossians 3:1–7 NKJV
1 If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. 5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
1. This means we must run away from the things that bring the wrath of God and escape from them.
1 Corinthians 10:13 NKJV
13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
A. Flee the love of money.
1 Timothy 6:10–11 NKJV
10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.
B. Flee sexual immorality.
1 Corinthians 6:18 NKJV
18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.
C. Flee youthful lust.
2 Timothy 2:22 NKJV
22 Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
C. This week, we must let out requests be made known to Him—Pray to God.
Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Body:
1. If we want to get to know the God of peace we must let our requests be made known to Him-pray to God.
Phil 4.
Philippians 4:6–7 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
A. Anxiety is the opposite of peace.
1. Anxiety sometimes has a sneaky way of choking out our peace.
Matt. 13.22
Matthew 13:22 NKJV
22 Now he who received seed among the thorns is he who hears the word, and the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.
A. The cares of this world can be anxieties as to how we are going to take care of our families.
1. How are we going to put food on the table.
2. How are we going to put clothes on our kids backs.
3. How are we going to pay for our children’s college.
4. How are we going to pay for all the medical expences.
B. The cares of this world can be anxieties about who is going to lead our country into the future.
1. What is the condition of the country for our children and grandchildren.
B. The way to handle anxiety is prayer and being thankful.
1. When you are thankful for what you have it is harder to be anxious about what might happen.
Philippians 4:11–14 NKJV
11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. 14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress.
A. Godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Tim. 6.6-
1 Timothy 6:6–9 NKJV
6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.
B. This type of contentment can lead to being right with God.
1. When you are content with what you have, when the big decisions come around, it can be easier to make the right one.
2. When you pray to God it can lead you to understanding that God answers prayers.
James 4:2–3 NKJV
2 You lust and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and war. Yet you do not have because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.
James 4
A. We can have confidence that God will answer prayers.
1 John 5:14–15 NKJV
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
1. Confidence in God removes anxieties and brings peace that surpasses all understanding because we understand that He is faithful.
2 Thessalonians 3:3 NKJV
3 But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.
2 Thess
A. Understanding that God is faithful brings peace because you know all things work together for good to those who love God.
Romans 8:28 NKJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
1. When we understand that all things work together for good to those who love God then we know if God is for us, who can be against us.
Romans 8:31 NKJV
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Rom 8
A. Knowing that God is for us allows us to be more than conquerors through Him.
Romans 8:37 NKJV
37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
Rom 8.
B. Knowing that we are conquerors through Him allows us to have the confidence that nothing can remove us from His save care.
Romans 8:38–39 NKJV
38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Rom. 8
3. We have this confidence that God is going to answer our prayers because we keep His commandments.
1 John 3:22 NKJV
22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.
1 Jn 3.22
A. This is why anxieties are lifted by trusting in Jesus.
Philippians 4:6 NKJV
6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;
1. Seeking first the kingdom of God brings peace and takes away all the worries or anxieties of life.
Matthew 6:25–34 NKJV
25 “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28 “So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29 and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 Now if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Matt.
