Breaking The Cycles - Broken Relationships (Preaching to the Offended)
Breaking The Cycles - Broken Relationships (Preaching to the Offended)
It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father’s wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.
For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.
For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, if indeed by putting it on we may not be found naked. For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
1 Corinthians
“For A Man”
2 Corinthians 5:1-
Who is this Man?
What’s his story?
What’s his background?
“For a man has his father’s wife”
We don’t know if the father was dead or alive.
This woman was his stepmother and this was unheard of.
“This man had some issues”
Paul even said… “Let him who has done this be removed from among you.”
Paul wanted him to be restored but knew he had to deal with His flesh!
Paul even said… “Let him who has done this be removed from among you.”
In 2 Corinthians it is believed to be “this man” that is the topic of discussion.
Paul has to address the issue but from a different point of view
Pain Is Like Domino’s
Now if anyone has caused pain, he has caused it not to me, but in some measure—not to put it too severely—to all of you.
2 Corinthians
Sometimes we don’t understand that are decisions affects everyone connected to us.
When we are hurt, others around us are hurt.
When we hurt others, those connected to us are hurt and those connected to those we hurt are hurt.
The we begin to fight for those connected to us to pick a side of which hurt team they will be on!
We then begin to fight for those connected to us to pick a side of which hurt team they will be on!
If this text is talking about “the man” from 1st Corinthians. He felt the punishment by the majority.
The only way you can have a “broken relationship” you must first have a relationship.
The people in the church knew this guy but his actions caused them to pick a side!
Correction Shouldn’t Produce Excessive Sorrow
For such a one, this punishment by the majority is enough, so you should rather turn to forgive and comfort him, or he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.
Paul said.... “This punishment by the majority is enough”
This statement is interesting -
“This Man” was already Corrected and punished!
What’s Next… Petty and Messy
Broken relationships in our lives seem to have petty and messy somewhere around!
Paul said enough… “You should rather turn to forgive and comfort him.”
“Or, he may be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.”
Petty and Messy can bring a person to a low place!
Make A Decision
So I beg you to reaffirm your love for him.
“to enforce,” “to confirm,” “to validate
Paul says… I beg you!
Reaffirm: to decide on and make a formal declaration about.
to rule (judicially) v. — to decide on and make a formal declaration about.
Yes things didn’t go well…
Different parties were involved
You have to make a decision…
We can’t make these types of decisions without including our conditions.
I like to call it “selective grace!”
We always want Grace but pick and choose who should receive it!
Think about the stupid mistakes we’ve made!
We haven’t always been right…
You needed time to mature… So do they....
Before you come to final conclusion… Think about how this could’ve been you!
How would you feel from the outside looking in!
Paul tell us in verse 10 to forgive!
For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.
Matthew 6:
1 Corinthians 2:
Breaking The Cycles - Broken Relationship
so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
2 Corinthians
Satan design for Broken Relationships is the punishment of un-forgiveness.
