Spirograph

Illustration: Who in here is a terrible artist? Cannot draw? Never has been able to do so? May have them come up and use the spirograph to make an image. Show to the audience and explain that this person is not an artist yet with guidance and the proper tool set they were able to create a work of art.
You:
You may have experienced this at some point in your life...

God:
Deuteronomy 20:1–9 NRSV
1 When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots, an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt. 2 Before you engage in battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the troops, 3 and shall say to them: “Hear, O Israel! Today you are drawing near to do battle against your enemies. Do not lose heart, or be afraid, or panic, or be in dread of them; 4 for it is the Lord your God who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to give you victory.” 5 Then the officials shall address the troops, saying, “Has anyone built a new house but not dedicated it? He should go back to his house, or he might die in the battle and another dedicate it. 6 Has anyone planted a vineyard but not yet enjoyed its fruit? He should go back to his house, or he might die in the battle and another be first to enjoy its fruit. 7 Has anyone become engaged to a woman but not yet married her? He should go back to his house, or he might die in the battle and another marry her.” 8 The officials shall continue to address the troops, saying, “Is anyone afraid or disheartened? He should go back to his house, or he might cause the heart of his comrades to melt like his own.” 9 When the officials have finished addressing the troops, then the commanders shall take charge of them.
Their Weapons V My Weapon
Deuteronomy 20:1 NRSV
1 When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots, an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
“When you go out to war”
This was not a guess at what would come but was a certainty!
War- A struggle, a scuffle, combat, etc.
We need to understand that while God has the ability to grant peace, there would be no recognition of peace without some chaos.
You all have a fight with something. God is telling you to FIGHT!
“WHEN you go out...”
“horses and chariots”
ex 14 5-18 : They are called back to remember the Egyptians and their weapons and tools.
Exodus 14:5–18 NRSV
5 When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the minds of Pharaoh and his officials were changed toward the people, and they said, “What have we done, letting Israel leave our service?” 6 So he had his chariot made ready, and took his army with him; 7 he took six hundred picked chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them. 8 The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt and he pursued the Israelites, who were going out boldly. 9 The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots, his chariot drivers and his army; they overtook them camped by the sea, by Pi-hahiroth, in front of Baal-zephon. 10 As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. In great fear the Israelites cried out to the Lord. 11 They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, ‘Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 But Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you see today you shall never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.” 15 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why do you cry out to me? Tell the Israelites to go forward. 16 But you lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, that the Israelites may go into the sea on dry ground. 17 Then I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them; and so I will gain glory for myself over Pharaoh and all his army, his chariots, and his chariot drivers. 18 And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I have gained glory for myself over Pharaoh, his chariots, and his chariot drivers.”
:God destroyed their methods of destruction in mud even though the Israelites walked through on dry land.
Deuteronomy 20:1 NRSV
1 When you go out to war against your enemies, and see horses and chariots, an army larger than your own, you shall not be afraid of them; for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.
“...you shall not be afraid of them...”
WHY?
“…the Lord your God is with you...”
YHWH= The Great I AM your Elohim= Supreme God Creator is with you!
Any time the adversary tempts you!
Any time that man/woman attacks you!
Any time you begin to doubt yourself!
God is telling you… It’s an unfair battle! I already won! I’ve BEEN winning!
War is going to happen in life and it will cause you harm if alone. Who are you fighting with?
How is your Preparation
Deuteronomy 20:2–3 NRSV
2 Before you engage in battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the troops, 3 and shall say to them: “Hear, O Israel! Today you are drawing near to do battle against your enemies. Do not lose heart, or be afraid, or panic, or be in dread of them;
The text continues...
Before battle...
The priest= God’s appointed vessel for the keeping of the place where God dwelt. The one who made sure that they could always keep in close proximity to God by keeping a clean life. THEY ARE GOING TO SPEAK TO THOSE FIGHTING AND GIVE INSTRUCTION!
“Hear, O Israel!”
Shema- Is not just listening to content but it also is inclusive of obedience!
“Do not lose heart, or be afraid, or panic, or be in dread of them...”
Lose heart= Do not have a soft heart (inner mind)
Be afraid= to be intimidated
It’s not more than you can handle, it’s not bigger than you, you CAN do it!
Panic= Be in dismay. (Present)
Running around like a chicken with your head cut off.
“For every action there’s a reaction. And God is mine!”
Dread- In distress over future events
Before we go into battle we need to be consistently preparing and knowing what type of attitude to bring to battle! I need my HEAD in order to fight!
You’ll get that on the way home! God is the head! His messenger will present Him to us!
God fights for me
Deuteronomy 20:4 NRSV
4 for it is the Lord your God who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to give you victory.”
Lord your God
God is name dropping again!
He tells us that his name packs a punch! And He is with us!
“…to fight for you against your enemies...”
God handles my battles!
Yes I may have to march around the walls of Jericho
Yes I may have to blow my trumpet!
Yes my feet get tired!
BUT I know them walls of opposition are coming down!
“…to give you victory...”
God doesn’t start fights to cause drama his intent is victory!
Do you want it?
VICTORY!
