It’s been called or really titled “Moses’s Upper Desert Discourse.”
Written by the the 120 year old leader, Moses.
The “who” in the Book of Deuteronomy is the New Generation that God is preparing to enter into the Promise Land soon.
Moses begins by reminding the New Generation that obedience is critical if they are to learn from the bad example of the older generation.
In , God once again remind the people.
“He brought us out of Egypt so he could give us this land he had sworn to give our ancestors.
23He brought us out of Egypt so he could give us this land he had sworn to give our ancestors.
Deuteronomy is a series of Farewell messages, kind of a “recap” of the books of Genesis to Numbers.
Lots of details, legal detail however unlike Leviticus focusing on the Priests, Deuteronomy focuses on the people, the layman.
In just before He died, knowing he was not going into the Promised Land from God, He told the people, “ 1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all the people of Israel while they were in the wilderness east of the Jordan River.
They were camped in the Jordan Valley near Suph, between Paran on one side and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Di-zahab on the other.”
1 These are the words that Moses spoke to all the people of Israel while they were in the wilderness east of the Jordan River.
They were camped in the Jordan Valley near Suph, between Paran on one side and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Di-zahab on the other.
The date believed that Moses wrote this book is somewhere around 1405 B.C..Moses wrote this book to continue encouraging the people to believe and obey God in order to receive God’s Blessings.
Theme and Purpose.
“Beware lest you forget” is a key theme in Deuteronomy.
Moses once again emphasizes the danger of forgetfulness because it normally leads to arrogance and disobedience.
Lesson one from Moses: When the people prospered, it is God who has caused it, and the second lesson is: When they disobey God, He will discipline them as He did when the previous generation failed to believe in Him.
Key Verses would probably be “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you?
He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul.
13 And you must always obey the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.
AND
12“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you?
He requires only that you fear the Lord your God, and live in a way that pleases him, and love him and serve him with all your heart and soul.
13 And you must always obey the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good.
19 “Today I have given you the choice between life and death, between blessings and curses.
Now I call on heaven and earth to witness the choice you make.
Oh, that you would choose life, so that you and your descendants might live!
20 You can make this choice by loving the Lord your God, obeying him, and committing yourself firmly to him.
This is the key to your life.
And if you love and obey the Lord, you will live long in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
Halalula!

(NLT)
The contribution to the Bible is simple, Deuteronomy is a supplement to the rest of the Pentateuch, (first 5 Books of the OT).
Deuteronomy fills in missing elements and gives the spiritual significance of the history found in the other books of Moses.
Genesis to Numbers portrays God’s ways, Deuteronomy reveals to us God’s unending Love.
OK, a little chart here: From Genesis to Numbers, 1) these books discuss the Development of Israel’s History.
2) Divine performances, (miracles) and 3) God speaks to Moses to teach His people.
In Deuteronomy God instructs Moses to focus on Israel’s History, their background, their Divine principles and lastly, rather than God speaking to Moses, Moses is not speaking directly to the people, his thoughts, his recollections, his teaching from the 40 years in the wilderness.
If we want to really see what God is doing through Deuteronomy, it has been said that it is an outline, a record of the renewal of the old covenant given to the people at Mt. Sinai.
Moses gives three sermons to the people of Israel.
His first sermon focuses on the moral judgment of God upon Israel’s unbelief and the deliverance and provision of God during times of obedience.
His second sermon dials in on Israel’s moral and legal choices.
Statutes, testimonies and ordinances.
Criminal law, system of justice, laws of warfare, rules of property, personal and family morality.
Moses third sermon.
Moses begins writing history in advance.
He predicts what is going to happen to the people (both blessings and curses) because of their hard hearts, their selfish attitudes, their choices.
Deuteronomy closes with these final words concerning Moses.... 10 “There has never been another prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.
11 The Lord sent him to perform all the miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, and all his servants, and his entire land.
12 With mighty power, Moses performed terrifying acts in the sight of all Israel.”
