Text -
Mark 8:34–37 NKJV
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Title - The Foundation of True Blessedness

Background

Word Meaning
Blessedness - means happiness
Grk. MAKARISMOS, from MAKARIOS
Makarios - means blessed, happy
Secular Worldview
happiness is a goal to achieve
Biblical worldview
happiness is the result of doing the right thing
Example -
blessed are the poor in spirit…
blessed are those who mourn…
blessed are the meek…
true happiness comes at a price - it is costly
are you willing to pay the price

The Main Point

True blessedness/happiness is the reward of giving up your most precious possession for something that you cannot gain by your own effort.
To illustrate - think of a business transaction
you sell something - this is your loses
you earn something - this is your gain/profit
your profit is what you received on top of your gain

Sermon Points

Life is like Trading (business)

Mark 8:35–37 NKJV
35 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Mark 8.35-37
Jesus shows how miss true happiness
People sell their own souls in order to gain the world
no profit - because when you sell your soul it’s gone forever
Jesus gives us a much better trade-off
give me your soul
your gain - Christ Himself and the gospel!
your profit - you save your soul
Matthew 25:20–21 NKJV
20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’
Matthew 25.
IN the parable, the servant receives 5 talents and trade them
the profit/gain - 5 more talents
the real profit - happiness with his master
1 Timothy 4:8 NKJV
8 For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.
Godliness versus physical activity
exercise produces healthy and strong body
the profit - little profit in the form of strong physique, and maybe longer life
Godliness - produces a healthy spiritual life that is pleasing to God
the profit - all things in this life and in that which is to come!
- there is no REAL profit in the flesh

What’s the Point?

True blessedness is not gained in the flesh
True blessedness is not attained by gaining the world

How do we gain true blessedness?

True blessedness is found in Christ

Romans 4:4–8 NKJV
4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. 5 But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6 just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: 7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.”
True blessedness is attained when one is forgiven of his sins and is declared righteous by faith in Christ!
Work Versus Faith
when you work you are paid according to your work
the problem is - human effort does not meet God’s standard
when you believe you receive the gift of grace!
your faith is accounted for righteousness
True blessedness is attained when one is forgiven of his sins and is declared righteous by faith in Christ!
blessed is the man whose sins are forgiven!
blessed is the man whose sins are covered!
blessed is the man to whom the LORD does not impute sin
In this trade -
your investment - you surrender your broken life to God
your gain - the righteousness of Jesus Christ put in your account!
your profit - eternal happiness, both now - in this life - and forever!
