Al ion went out into the jungle one day
swaggering - for he was a lion
tiger and looked at tiger & roared
“Second rate, second class tiger, who is king of the jungle?
why you are mighty lion. you are king of the jungle
strutted up to a bear
“hey bear, you hibbernating bear. who is king of the jungle?
why you are mr lion.
Then the lion went down to the pond and saw a bull elephant
roared and said “hey fat elephant who is king of the jungle
elephant looked at him
stomped lions little paw with his big foot
picked him up with trunk & dunked him in the water
pulled him out and flung him against a tree
The lion slid down to the base of the tree and said
“look here, elephant. you don’t have to get so mad just because you didn’t know the right answer”
The lion had a problem with pride
We are looking in the book of Daniel again today
you can’t please God if your proud
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble
Did you know that when the Lord talks about the sins that He hates, that pride is the first on His list
Proverbs 6:16 ESV
There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him:
Proverbs 6:16–17 NKJV
These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood,
abomination:
Pride: The spirit that makes one overestimate himself and underestimate others
pride:
independent spirit
I can do things on my own
When God says that He hates pride, pride is not so much an action, it’s an ATTITUDE
Today we will look in Daniel chapter 4 at King Nebuchadnezzar
a man who was stuffed full of himself
learn what happens when we walk in pride
learn to be cautious of pride
guard up
Bible says that Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before stumbling
Backstory:
Nebuchadnezzar is king of Babylon 605-562 BC
great king in terms of power, splendor, & wealth
Babylon had the Hanging Gardens of Babylon - one of the seven wonders of the world
ALSO- great wall in babylon - so 2 of 7
He built them both!
In chapter 2 dream no one could interpret
wouldn’t tell them the dream
God shown it to Daniel after Daniel prayed
1st dream of Neb big statue
head made of gold
Daniel told him it was about kings and kingdoms
about your kingdom & ones to come
you are the head of gold
Neb loved that - head of gold
So in chapter 3 Neb builds a statue 90.9
of gold -
everyone had to worship but Shadrach, Meshach, & Abednego wouldn’t
God delivered them from fiery fernace
Chapter 4- Neb has another dream
calls in his brightest interpreters and tells them the dream
Dan 4:10-
Daniel 4:10–17 NLT
“ ‘While I was lying in my bed, this is what I dreamed. I saw a large tree in the middle of the earth. The tree grew very tall and strong, reaching high into the heavens for all the world to see. It had fresh green leaves, and it was loaded with fruit for all to eat. Wild animals lived in its shade, and birds nested in its branches. All the world was fed from this tree. “ ‘Then as I lay there dreaming, I saw a messenger, a holy one, coming down from heaven. The messenger shouted, “Cut down the tree and lop off its branches! Shake off its leaves and scatter its fruit! Chase the wild animals from its shade and the birds from its branches. But leave the stump and the roots in the ground, bound with a band of iron and bronze and surrounded by tender grass. Now let him be drenched with the dew of heaven, and let him live with the wild animals among the plants of the field. For seven periods of time, let him have the mind of a wild animal instead of the mind of a human. For this has been decreed by the messengers; it is commanded by the holy ones, so that everyone may know that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world. He gives them to anyone he chooses— even to the lowliest of people.”
None of the other magicians or interpretors knew the dream
but Daniel got in tune with God and God revealed it to him
Daniel 4:24–27 NLT
“ ‘This is what the dream means, Your Majesty, and what the Most High has declared will happen to my lord the king. You will be driven from human society, and you will live in the fields with the wild animals. You will eat grass like a cow, and you will be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses. But the stump and roots of the tree were left in the ground. This means that you will receive your kingdom back again when you have learned that heaven rules. “ ‘King Nebuchadnezzar, please accept my advice. Stop sinning and do what is right. Break from your wicked past and be merciful to the poor. Perhaps then you will continue to prosper.’
Dan 4:24-
this would be a tough one to interpret
Daniel 4:28–33 ESV
All this came upon King Nebuchadnezzar. At the end of twelve months he was walking on the roof of the royal palace of Babylon, and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” While the words were still in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you, and you shall be driven from among men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field. And you shall be made to eat grass like an ox, and seven periods of time shall pass over you, until you know that the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will.” Immediately the word was fulfilled against Nebuchadnezzar. He was driven from among men and ate grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair grew as long as eagles’ feathers, and his nails were like birds’ claws.
Dan 4:28
WOW! That’s what happened to King Neb
He ends chapter 4 by saying that God is able to humble those who walk in pride
3 lessons on pride
Pride is a problem for everyone
No one is immune to pride
start of all sin
caused lucifer to become satan
it’s obvious on some
very obvious
you can be around someone for a few minutes and see it all over them
that was Neb
somewhere before building a golden statue of self crossed a line
all that and a bag of chips
cat’s pajamas
bee’s knees
wanted everyone to know he was great
Here is the kicker:
Was Neb a great king?
YES- dan told him in chapter 2
your a great king and leader
he was the most powerful man in the world during that time
but where did all of that greatness come from?
God
but Neb forgot
1 Corinthians 4:7 ESV
For who sees anything different in you? What do you have that you did not receive? If then you received it, why do you boast as if you did not receive it?
Neb - all that came from God
but he thought it was all from himself
Difference between a dog and a cat
dog
excited when you come home
master pets
dog happy
my master is good to me
cat
couldn’t care less taht you came home
master pets
cat yawns & stretches
this master worships me - I must be a god
some people have obvious pride
do you have obvious pride?
Some don’t have obvious pride
they have hidden pride
Daniel 4:30 ESV
and the king answered and said, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?”
he’s looking at the hanging gardens
looking at the great wall
so big & thick that you could run 4 horse-drawn chariots side by side on the wall
thinking
Look how great Babylon is
THAT I BUILT MYSELF BY MY MIGHT FOR THE GLORY OF MY MAJESTY
I, myself, my my
Pride is focused on I right
someone said that a person who is all wrapped up in himself makes a very small package
pride is preoccupation with self
Now I heard about a preacher
breakfast on Monday after a good Sunday
talking to wife
“Honey, how may really good preachers do you think that there are in the world?”
she said “ Well, I don’t know, but I imagine it’s one less than you think”
You may have a hidden pride problem if you say
I’m nothing like king neb
I don’t walk on my roof and say look at what I have or what I have done, how great I am
BUT you are still preoccupied with self
always talking about your job, kids, this or that, everythign that you do
Depressed people have inverted pride
depressed person is always thinking about self
consumed with self
God loves everybody but me
he can do anything except in my life
forgive any sin but mine
they are the exception and life is all about them
a depressed person is hard to be around
because they are takers
never giving to a relationship - constatantly taking
some are depressed and wander why they don’t have friends - pride
stop focusing so much on you and focus on others
we often misunderstand what the bible talks about with humility
Romans 12:3 ESV
For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned.
Galatians 6:3 ESV
For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.
but at the same time we are not to think more lowly of self than we aree
some think humble- I’m no good, I can’t do anything
your just slumped over
Jesus said “blessed are the poor in spirit
you think that you are just poor in spirit
that’s not poor in spirit that’s just poor posture
The Lord never says to run yourself down and that’s how your humble
humble person doesn’t think too highly of self
HE DOES THINK HIGHLY of self but not too highly
you should think highly of self if your a Christian
your the kings kid
royal blood in your viens
you should think highly of self
but not too highly
The humble person, if you want to put it in a nutshell. The humble person just doesn‟t think much about himself at all. He‟s thinking about other people. He‟s thinking about the Lord.

Also how to walk in humility
God is patient with the proud
but God wants everyone to know that He is Lord
we need to learn proper placement
don’t worry so much about yourself
think more of others & think more often of God
