Who do you look like?
Who do you act like?
Do you have brothers and sisters?
How did you get along?
John is writing to his church again.
He wants to offer some reassurance to those who have remained faithful to the true gospel.
The gospel that centers on God’s love for the world that he gave his son that whoever believes in him will never perish but have eternal life.
He shows the difference by comparing Children of God and Children of the Devil.
BUT the most important part of this passage and the message of 1 John cannot be lost.
We are God’s children if we trust him because of what Jesus did on the cross.
So, here comes the choice many of us have already made.
Who’s your daddy?
Children of God
1 John 3:1-
1 John 3:5
1 John 3:7
: 1-Out of this world love lavished on us
What does it mean to be a child of God?
Out of this world love lavished on us
We will be like Christ
We won’t be known by the world
We will be a reflection of our father.
1 John
More to us than we know
What we will be is not known
We will be like Christ when he appears
We will see him as he really is
If we want to be like our daddy, we need to know our daddy.
If we want to be like our daddy, we need to know our daddy.
Our focus is on him.
Our desire is him.
We abide in him
We hope in Him
Hope in Christ’s appearance
Hope we will be like Christ
Hope we will be made new
We are purified like Christ because we are like Christ
We are also purified just as Christ is pure
Another Father
They break the law of our father
We see this as a contrast to what it means to belong to God.
1 John 3:
1 John 3:4-
Jesus came to bring us back to THE father
He sets us free from sin
This is a reminder to all who believe, that Jesus has taken away our sins.
1 John 3
Sin Breaks
We have to keep in mind that if we believe we have been forgiven, we are made new.
Remember who John is talking to, his church that had been divided by people who acted like they were part of the family, but they were not changed.
They believed in a special knowledge that led them to God, not a personal, life changing relationship with God.
If we live in the father through Christ, then we are something new.
A different father
We really don’ t like to talk about the devil.
We want to ignore that he exists
We would rather bury our head in the sand, believe me I would rather skip this passage, but we cannot ignore the enemy.
But the truth is he is the prince of this world.
1 John 3:
1 John
1 John 3:6-They break the law of our father
They break the law of our father
We see this as a contrast to what it means to belong to God.
1 John 3:
1 John 3:7-
Those that lead us astray do not belong to the father.
John is not saying doing what is right makes you right with God, but rather he is reiterating what he has been saying all along.
When you trust and believe in Jesus, your life changes.
You have been saved by his grace, but you don’t look alike.
I want to stress this is John saying the same thing he has been saying in a different way.
Light vs Dark, Life vs Death, Living in Sin vs living in forgiveness, Keep commands vs ignore commands, loving and living in God vs loving and living in the world.
We really don’ t like to talk about the devil.
We want to ignore that he exists
We would rather bury our head in the sand, believe me I would rather skip this passage, but we cannot ignore the enemy.
But the truth is he is the prince of this world.
Jn 14:30; 16:11; 2 Co 4:4; Eph 2:2; 1 Jn 4:4; 5:19
Jn 14:30; 16:11; 2 Co 4:4; Eph 2:2; 1 Jn 4:4; 5:19
;9
Jesus came to destroy the devil’s work!
God’s seed: the holy spirit, life, sonship, you are HIS.
He is in you.
You are in him.
Be like your daddy!
We are no longer sinners because we have been made new.
We are not the same as we used to be.
John has been telling us since the beginning of 1 John that we will not stop sinning completely, but he is pointing out that we who believe are no longer slaves to sin.
It is not our master.
God is our daddy and we have been reborn.
Our nature is now pure, as he is pure.
However, because we are God’s children we should look like him.
We can only look like him if we know him and are growing in him.
Trust him and obey him
Love your brothers and sisters
Give your life up for others
Who’s your daddy?
Who do you look like?
Who do you want to be like?
My Daddy is bigger than the world’s daddy
Daddy’s Children
This passage is about reassurance.
reminding us that we belong to God.
