Intro

What’s your favorite way to relax?
Is it ok to just share with people about God’s love and not his wrath?
Work, Rest, Worship
“We can easily get bogged down with the busyness of life, but it’s important to take time to rest so we can focus on Jesus without all of life’s distractions.”
Israelite Deliverance from Egyptians
Busy Teen lives
Find worth in “being busy”
Busyness = i’m doing important stuff
What happens when we are busy?
Doing important stuff is not tied to how many things we do, but rather WHAT things we do.
Do you think rest is something that God gave us? Or something that we have to do?
We should learn to slow down and enjoy the rest that God gives us.

PART1

Exodus 20:8–11 CSB
Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy: You are to labor six days and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. You must not do any work—you, your son or daughter, your male or female servant, your livestock, or the resident alien who is within your city gates. For the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and everything in them in six days; then he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and declared it holy.
What is Sabath?
When did God command Sabath?
Not only creation, but also the 10 commandments!
God commands us to take a Sabath Rest.
Who was the Sabath created for?
Man was not created for the Sabath, but Sabath was created for Man
When we ignore God’s command to rest, we will have consequences.
When we obey God’s command to rest, we will see benefits:
-Physical Rest: God knew our bodies needed it.
-Spiritual Refreshment: We need to take time to connect with Christ. Spiritually drained vs. Spiritually energized.
-Time for reflection: we need time to examine our lives and what we have done.
Sabath keeping involves two parts: a break from the busy, and a time to focus on Christ.
1: Why do we often struggle to slow down and take a break
2: What distractions can keep us from resting and reflecting on the Sabath?

PART2

Exodus 31:12–14 CSB
The Lord said to Moses: “Tell the Israelites: You must observe my Sabbaths, for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, so that you will know that I am the Lord who consecrates you. Observe the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Whoever profanes it must be put to death. If anyone does work on it, that person must be cut off from his people.
From these verses does it seem like the Sabbath is important to God or not important to God?
Why?
Things seem to start with the Sabbath being Holy. God is very concerned about it being a holy day.
The world does not see the Sabbath as important. The world wants us to Go go go.
What do you think he meant by the Sabbath being a sign?
They kept the sabbath to show that they belonged to God, and we should do the same.
Because we belong to Christ, we are called to be different than the world. When the world wants to Go Go Go and be Busy busy busy, we need to rest like God commands us. We need to show that we are different from the world because we belong to God.
As Christians, we do not observe Sabbath in the same way as the israelites, but the principle is what is important for us. What is the principle that God was trying to show about the Sabbath?
3: What does it mean to keep a day “holy”?
5: What might need to change so that your Sabbath practices improve your relationship with God?

Part3

Exodus 31:15–17 CSB
Work may be done for six days, but on the seventh day there must be a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord. Anyone who does work on the Sabbath day must be put to death. The Israelites must observe the Sabbath, celebrating it throughout their generations as a permanent covenant. It is a sign forever between me and the Israelites, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, but on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.”
Setting boundaries for Avenleigh because we love her. Boundaries are an essential part of the relationship.
Have you ever seen kids with no boundaries? Are those the kids you want to be with?
What are some boundaries that your parents have set that you don’t like?
God sets boundaries for us as well. If we obey God, be blesses us with a relationship with him. If we disobey God, there will be difficult consequences.
When we disobey God, what happens to us?
Do we loose our relationship with him?
We will lack peace and joy until we make things right with God. Confessing our sin to him.
There is no place worse for a Christian than in unrepentant sin.
Thankfully we serve a God who is waiting to forgive us.
As we keep the sabbath, obeying God in this command will help us keep a close relationship with him.
6: How does the sabbath rest impact our relationship with God?
7: How can we practically implement Sabbath rest?
8: What does your Sabbath rest say about your relationship to God?
9: How does the sabbath help you to remain close with God each week?
10: How does busyness affect your relationship with God? What do you need to change?
11: What do we gain when we regularly observe the sabbath?
When we are busy all the time, who do you think we are trusting in?
This can be lots of different things. Maybe “I have to do this sport workout every single day so that IIIIiiiiiiIIIIII can do well.”
Maybe “I have to study every day so that IIIIiiiiiIIIII can do well at school”
Northland
Maybe “I have to work everyday so that IIIIiiiiIIII have enough money.”
15: How have you demonstrated trust in God for what you need?
16: How can you this week use the Sabbath as a way to help a non believer see who Jesus is to you?
Maybe through not practicing. Maybe through not studying. Maybe through resting.
