It doesn’t make us unholy if we have been anxious or suffer or have suffered from anxiety. If that’s you your not alone. Paul wrote out of his own battle.
Philippians 4:4–7 ESV
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Joe Blakes
This series is born out of weakness, i have suffered with this, these verses were the main verses i would read before i went to bed & before i got out of bed every day.
worriment
Paul says be anxious for nothing but is that possible?
Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This generation is probably the most stressed
Elijah.
He loved God incredibly but suffered with anxiety & God looked after Elijah incredibly well.
now Elijah predicts a drought, He raises a widows son, He confronts Ahab. God feeds him bread & meat, for 3 years Ahab pursues Elijah, confronts Ahab again & tells him to bring all his prophets.
Your thinking fearless, this prophet of God is fearless, he’s got it all together
We move on he mocks & then slaughters 850 prophets of baal & asherah, this man is great you are thinking & you would be right thinking that.
But then the Kings wife, Jezebel happens.
Elijah experienced non-stop provision, protection, presence, power of God, but 1 really grumpy woman makes a threat & he falls apart.
1 Kings 19:1–3 ESV
Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
1 Kings 19:1
1 Kings 19:4 ESV
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
1 kings 19:4-5
I can’t just take it anymore.
Have you done something for someone a hundred times with no thanks, parents you’ll know about this. & then the 101 time they don’t say thanks you snap.
Elijah made some mistakes that are not uncommon to us.
We run ourselves into the ground.
Elijah’s fear was of death, God swept him away on chariots of fire, he didn’t have to face death.
Like us, his worst fears never happened, it was just in the mind.
What happened is that Elijah had run himself out,
2. Shut people out.
Elijah went of on his own, he left his most loyal person behind.
He internalised the problem, i can carry this alone because no one understands this like me, it affects me, but what we don’t realise when we internalize is that we affect other people around us.
3. We focus on the negative.
What did Elijah say:
1 Kings 19:4 ESV
But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
1 kings 19
But when we focus on the negative it drives us further down the track of despair, i’m no better than my fathers, life isn’t going to get any better, we start having a self pitty party, where only one is invited. i shouted at my kids, i’m a terrible mum or dad, iv’e got no money, it goes on beating yourself up, focusing on the negative.
4. We forget God.
God has been with Elijah every step of the way, wherever he has gone so has God, God has provided at all times, God has protected at all times. but Elijah forgets God in the midst of his anxiety, it’s what happens.
What does Elijah mean:
EL(Elohim-God) I-(mine) JAH-Yahweh
My God is Yahweh- Breath
My God is my breath.
Craig Groeshel. When you are anxious- can’t catch your breath-shortness of breath.
Facing your fears while forgetting your God.
look while Elijah was falling apart God doesn’t rebuke him or ask where is your faith, He just meets him in his need.
1 Kings 19:11–12 ESV
And he said, “Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper.
God wasn’t in the wind, he wasn’t in the earthquake, he wasn’t in the fire.
God wasn’t in any of it.
God wasn’t in the loud
God wasn’t in the remarkable, he was in the ordinary! God was in the whisper.
(get someone up)
When we are stressed, overcome by anxiety why does Gods voice seem so quiet.
Why doesn’t he speak to us in spectacular & powerful ways?
The enemy shouts his accusations because he is far off, God is close.
The devil shouts lies, God whispers the truth, drawing close, He is with you, He is here! He will never leave you!
He is close to the brokenhearted, the overwhelmed, those who are crushed, struck down, there not abandoned.
Why does he whisper? it’s because he is close
i came through because God is near.
what Elijah feared was death, but it never came.
He was anxious for nothing, what he feared didn’t come to pass.
There is nothing that God can’t bring you through,
storm bring you through, obstacle he can’t overcome, enemy defeat, heartache he won’t heal.
