B. Where We’re Going
C. Main Text
Ephesians 4:11–12 ESV
11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,
D. Prayer
E. Context
a. What is an evangelist?
1. Sometimes we think that they r folks traveling frm 1 church 2 the next stirring up a congregation w/signs, wonders, & passionate preaching & then moving on
2. This doesn’t seem to be the biblical model
i. Yes, evangelists travel frm place 2 place, but their focus isn’t the saved!
ii. They may regularly operate in spiritual gifts such as exhortation, miracles, healings, etc.
-but their focus isn’t the churched
-They’re main concern is the Un-churched!!
3. We’re all called 2 make disciples (don’t forget ), But evangelists have a special anointing 4 it!!
3. We’re all called 2 make disciples (don’t forget ), But evangelists have a special anointing 4 it!!
b. Interestingly, evangelists r only mentioned 3x in the entire NT!
1. Our main text (which is how we know it’s a spiritual leadership gift)
2. Acts describing Philip’s role (we’ll get there)
3. & Paul talking 2 Tim in (which we’ll talk about there too.
i. Let’s narrow our focus in on the...
II. BODY
A. Spiritual Leadership Gift: Evangelists
a. The Supernatural empowering by the Holy Spirit to bring the message of God’s redeeming grace through Jesus Christ to folks who haven’t heard it
1. Evangelists are set apart as disciple makers
Matthew 28:19–20 ESV
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Ministry Gifts . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition.
2. Evangelist brings the good news o Salvation through Jesus’ death & resurrection 2 folks who haven’t heard.
i. This is primarily a ministry to the unsaved on behalf of the church
-We r all called 2 make disciples, but the evangelist is especially set apart 2 this end…making disciples
An Evangelist views life through the lens of the gospel being preached and souls being saved.
ii. An Evangelist views life through the lens of the gospel being preached & souls being saved.
-There is nothing more important / mission more worthy o their attention!
-they eat, sleep, drink, & live sharing the gospel!
*When their not evangelizing they feel empty, as if their’s a piece o ‘em missing…incomplete even
-Whether they r forging new ground in unreached areas / continuing the work of an established church their primary concern is winning souls in2 God’s kingdom
iii. Whether they’re speaking 2 the multitudes / talking to 1 it’s all about sharing the love & forgiveness o God & the salvation that is available 2 all through God’s Son Jesus Christ.

B. Philip was an evangelist
a. What we know about Phil is simple
1. He was 1st commissioned by the Apostles as a Deacon (acts 6:1-6)
2. Next time we c him, He’s in Samaria during the persecution by Saul as an evangelist!
3. He continues as an evangelist 4 years, as we c in...
Acts 21:8 ESV
8 On the next day we departed and came to Caesarea, and we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.
a. An Evangelist is often found forging new ground
1. Phil, driven away frm Jerusalem by Saul’s persecution o the church...
i. “those who were scattered”found himself in Samaria & guess what he did
Acts 8:4–8 ESV
4 Now those who were scattered went about preaching the word. 5 Philip went down to the city of Samaria and proclaimed to them the Christ. 6 And the crowds with one accord paid attention to what was being said by Philip, when they heard him and saw the signs that he did. 7 For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who had them, and many who were paralyzed or lame were healed. 8 So there was much joy in that city.
i. “those who were scattered”…who did the scattering?
-so often we think that H.S. is only leading us to easy things, plush jobs, happiness & comfort
*Jesus was “driven in2 the wilderness” by H.S. in2 40days o fasting & then tempted
*The Apostles were regularly driven in2 unsafe environments where they were jailed & / beaten
-I’m not saying that God caused the persecution o the saints here
*I’m saying God never waists anything…not even our suffering
*God uses these 4 our good & the good o his church…bringing his kingdom 2 earth
ii. So, Phil found himself in Samaria & there he stepped in2 his calling!
2. Philip drew a crowd & captured their attention w/ miracles & healings, but this wasn’t his primary goal.
i.
3. Philip drew a crowd & captured their attention w/ healings, but this wasn’t his primary goal.
3. Philip drew a crowd & captured their attention w/ healings, but this wasn’t his primary goal.
i. His mission was 2 win souls!!
Acts 8:12 ESV
12 But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
Acts 8:
ii. Notice it wasn’t the miracles that caused them to believe,
-Luke records in Acts that, “they believed Philip as he preached good news”
-
b. It is the evangelists’ preaching that wins souls to God’s Kingdom!
1. Miracles accompanied Phil’s preaching, but it wasn’t the miracles that saved those folks!
i. It was the proclamation o the God’s kingdom
1. Philip drew a crowd with healings, but this wasn’t his primary goal.
Romans 10:14 ESV
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
ii. Paul said it this way in...
ii. & again in...
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
-It won’t b our good works, signs, wonders or good looks that win people to Christ...
*It’s declaring the truth that Jesus is “the way, the truth, & the life. No one comes to the Father except through him” ...
~through accepting Jesus as Lord & savior by his death & resurrection
c. God hasn’t called Evangelists to set up churches
1. Once Apostles heard about what was happening in Samaria, They sent Peter & John down 2 investigate
i. It’s there that Pete & Jn laid hands on the new believers & they were baptized in the H.S. (vs 14-17)
ii. It doesn’t expressly say, but I believe that Pete & Jn began 2 do what apostles do best:
-Continue Preaching the mysteries of Christ
-Set up new Jesus centered communities called churches
-establish leadership & move on
2. Philip had no desire to establish a church, get people rooted & grounded in the Word, / 2 teach ‘em.
i. He didn’t even baptize ‘em in H.S. (we c the apostles do that!)
ii. Evangelists’ chief concern is making disciples
-maybe they baptize the new disciples, but after that…Their moving to the next unchurched person/persons
iii. 1 person will never b able 2, & should not do everything.
-All of us are limited, but God is not!
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Ministry Gifts . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition.
-& so, we need 1 another… That’s how God designed the body of Christ
3. What happened 2 Phil?
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Ministry Gifts . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition. What happened 2 Phil?
i. (vs 26) An angel came 2 him & said, it’s time 2 go!!
-What did Phil find?
Acts 8:27-
ii. On the way the H.S. said, “hey go stand by that chariot over there”
III. Phil heard this Ethiopian Eunuch reading from the book of Isaiah
-When he saw there was only 1 guy, Phil was like, ‘Man…what a waste o my gifts! I’m outa here!”
*NO!!
d. A mature evangelist gives equal value to declaring to the multitudes as one person
Acts 8:30–31 ESV
30 So Philip ran to him and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet and asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?” 31 And he said, “How can I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.
Acts 8:30-
1. The Ethiopian invited Phil to teach him who Isaiah was describing…who is this suffering messiah?
Acts 8:35–38 NKJV
35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. 36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?” 37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” 38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
Acts 8:35-38
i. The word “preached” is evangelize!
ii. Philip ...
C. An evangelist continues the work of an established church by preaching
a. Once a church is created it’s evangelizing work must continue
1. Paul writes to Tim in...
2 Timothy 4:5 ESV
5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
2 Tim 4:
1. This isn’t a declaration that all pastors are evangelists, but that Tim was anointed to b an evangelistic pastor!
b. Even though not every church has an evangelistic pastor, every church must have evangelists!
1. Ea. local church must have Jesus followers set apart for the work of evangelism
i. folks who’s heart is 2 see the lost hear the truth that Jesus saves!!
-To see God’s “Kingdom Come & will be done” starting w/the preaching 2 “repent 4 the KOG is at hand”
D. Evangelism at GMCC
a. Kiomi
b. Mayfest, Fallapalooza, Green Mountain Christmas
c. We need 2 pray as Jesus taught us...
c. A mature evangelist gives equal value to declaring to the multitudes as one person
Matthew 9:37–38 ESV
37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
Luke 9:
Luke 10:1–2 ESV
1 After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.
1. Jesus is talking about needing workers 2 GO OUT & bring the lost in.
i. Jesus declares that there r just not enough folks doing the work o an evangelist so we should pray that God send out more & more & more
ii. So often the Church has an “if we build it they will come” mindset, but Jesus says go out and build my church, & it starts w/us going in2 all o our world and sharing the Good News that Jesus saves!!
-& especially that God would rise up, call & set apart evangelists to forge new ground & support the continued growth o the local church
d. Bring up Kiomi & any others called 2 b an evangelist
d. Bring up
1. Pray
i. 4 evangelists
ii. 4 more evangelists
