John
John 16:1 NIV84
“All this I have told you so that you will not go astray.
“This”refers back to . It refers to what Jesus had to say about the believer’s relationship to the world. That relationship, Jesus promised, would be strained, hostile at times, and even deadly.
Jesus wanted to make sure that His followers knew this so it would not be a stumbling block for them. However, many stumbled, many fell, many fled, and many doubted. But when the Holy Spirit was given to them, they acted decisively and spoke boldy.
The word ASTRAY is worth looking at further. It comes from the Greek word skandalizo which means to put a snare in the way in which it would cause one to stumble.
Matthew 11:6 NIV84
Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me.”
John 16:
John 16:2 NIV84
They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
The Jews had already decided that whoever acknowledged Jesus as the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. This was evident in :
John 9:22 NIV84
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
Many leaders who believed feared this as well as seen in :
John 12:42 NIV84
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
John 12:42 NIV84
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;
Here, Jesus is telling His disciples: “You will be kicked out.”
Even worse was to happen.
This is evidenced in
Acts 7:57–60 NIV84
At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him, dragged him out of the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” Then he fell on his knees and cried out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Saul of Tarsus who became Paul, believed he was in the right for persecuting Christians.
Acts 8:3 NIV84
But Saul began to destroy the church. Going from house to house, he dragged off men and women and put them in prison.
Herod had James put to death in .
Acts 12:1–2 NIV84
It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them. He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.
Saul/Paul felt his persecution of the Christians was evidence of his zeal for the Lord.
Philippians 3:4–6 NIV84
though I myself have reasons for such confidence. If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a Pharisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless.
Philippians
One source, Martyrs in the 20th Century 1900-1990, reveals that 26, 625,000 Christians died for the cause of Christ.
John 16:3 NIV84
They will do such things because they have not known the Father or me.
They couldn’t be on the side of the Lord because they didn’t even know the Lord.
Here are some strong words from John in Revelation:
Revelation 2:9 NIV84
I know your afflictions and your poverty—yet you are rich! I know the slander of those who say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan.
Revelation 3:9 NIV84
I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.
They are enemies until they find the Lord, but those who do, know Christ.
1 Timothy 1:13–16 NIV84
Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.
John 16:4 NIV84
I have told you this, so that when the time comes you will remember that I warned you. I did not tell you this at first because I was with you.
I imagine when these things happened, the disciples realized that Jesus’ words were true.
When jesus was with them, He was the reason for persecution. After He went to be with the Father, the disciples were to experience themselves.
Remembering helps strengthen faith. It also reassures us that what is happening is not outside of His knowledge or His control.
John 13:19 NIV84
“I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He.
John 14:29 NIV84
I have told you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe.
John
John 16:5 NIV84
“Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
This is an example of the use of language Jesus used. The disciples had questioned where Jesus was going.
John 13:36 NIV84
Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.”
John 14:5 NIV84
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
In Jesus’ use of language, He is saying, “no one is asking NOW where I am going, at a time when they really need to.”
John 16:6 NIV84
Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.
The word for grief is LYPE. It occurs in verses 20, 21, and 22.
Jesus recognizes the grief of the disciples. If Jesus recognized their grief, He can recognize our grief.
In fact, not only does He recognize it, He responds to it in verse 7.
John 16:7 NIV84
But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.
The prophets of the OT comforted the people with hope and assurance.
Isaiah 9:6 NIV84
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Micah 5:6 NIV84
They will rule the land of Assyria with the sword, the land of Nimrod with drawn sword. He will deliver us from the Assyrian when he invades our land and marches into our borders.
Zechariah 3:8 NIV84
“ ‘Listen, O high priest Joshua and your associates seated before you, who are men symbolic of things to come: I am going to bring my servant, the Branch.
Zechariah
Jesus, in the same fashion, is saying hope ans assurance is coming with the arrival of the Counselor/Comforter.
One thought here, if this was good for the disciples to know the Holy Spirit was coming, then how much better is it for us to already have the Holy Spirit?
John 16:8 NIV84
When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
Literally, this is saying, “to show someone his sin and summon him to repentance.”
Some translations have the word “expose”instead of convict. Expose is a good understanding here. It reiterates :
John 3:20 NIV84
Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
The word utilized here is ELENCHO. It is translated 18 times in the New Testament and is best translated at expose, convict, and rebuke. It was a word used by Greek moralists in relation to the conscience. The Counselor’s work will lead to repentance and salvation, or the hardening of the heart and condemnation.
John explains this further in verses 9-11.
John 16:9 NIV84
in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;
Sin comes as a refusal to have faith in Christ.
Jesus gives several warnings in John’s gospel about the seriousness of sins:
John 8:21 NIV84
Once more Jesus said to them, “I am going away, and you will look for me, and you will die in your sin. Where I go, you cannot come.”
John 8:24 NIV84
I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the one I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins.”
John 9:41 NIV84
Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.
John
John 15:22 NIV84
If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not be guilty of sin. Now, however, they have no excuse for their sin.
John 15:24 NIV84
If I had not done among them what no one else did, they would not be guilty of sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.
John 15
One role of the Holy Spirit is to convict of the sin of unbelief. The sin of unbelief is extremely serious as it is the rejection of the one God sent. It is rejection of God Himself.
John 16:10 NIV84
in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
The Jews had applied their righteousness as a standard. Jesus was considered a sinful man according to the standards of the Jewish righteous. The On who was sent by God for the atonement of mankind was declared by human righteousness as condemned. The Counselor will convict the world for its false standard of righteousness.
John 16:11 NIV84
and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
Jesus has already described the devil as a liar and the father of lies:
John 8:44 NIV84
You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
He is the source of all false judgement. Jesus said that the prince of this world will be driven out:
John 12:31 NIV84
Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.
As a result, the prince of this world, the author of all false judgement is condemned and the role of the Counselor will be to prove wrong those of this world who distort true judgement.
John 16:12 NIV84
“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
Once again Jesus is being tender to His disciples. He gives them only what they can handle. He has compassion on them. Instead of confounding them or causing them to stumble, He as assured them of the Holy Spirit.
John 16:13 NIV84
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
Jesus promises the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Remember how the Israelites were guided by the pillar of cloud and fire? The Holy Spirit would guide them in what to say, what to write, and what to do. The Holy Spirit does the same for us.
Romans 8:14 NIV84
because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
Romans 8:6 NIV84
The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
Romans 5:5 NIV84
And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
Romans 8:9
Romans 8:9 NIV84
You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
The Holy Spirit not only shows the way, but goes along with us all the way!
1 John 2:27 NIV84
As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him.
The Spirit will teach nothing but the truth.
The Spirit knows and searches all things.
1 Corinthians 2:10–11 NIV84
but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians
The Spirit’s teaching and testimony always aligns with the teachings of Christ.
1 John 5:7–8 NIV84
For there are three that testify: the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
1 John 5:7 NIV84
For there are three that testify:
The Spirit gives prophecy
Joel 2:28 NIV84
“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.
The Spirit gives revelation:
1 Timothy 4:1 NIV84
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
1 Timothy
John 16:14 NIV84
He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
The Spirit being sent was glorifying Christ. God glorified Christ in heaven and the Spirit glorified Him on earth.
John 16;14
All the Spirit did - the gifts, the graces, the preaching, the teaching, the writing, the miracles were to glorify Christ.
The Spirit glorified Christ by leading His followers into the truth as it is in Jesus.
Ephesians 4:21 NIV84
Surely you heard of him and were taught in him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus.
John 16:15 NIV84
All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.
John 16:15
The Holy Spirit is the teacher in the lives of Christians. He helps the Bible to become real and applicable to us from which we get insight.
John 16:16 NIV84
“In a little while you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me.”
Starts a new pattern of thought.
