Intro

3 obstacles that others have told me about
Lack of time/Discipline
Make time
Every little step helps
Lack of Direction
SOAP by Wayne Cadero
Bible resources: Youversion, Bible Gateway, Blue Letter Bible
Intentional vs Ambiguous: Plan vs not
quality is more important than quantity but some in better than none
Find what works
Lack of Understanding
I may have a plan or approach but I still don’t understand what I am reading
Getting into the weeds/different opinions/Tools
How to Read the Bible for All It’s Worth and Book by Book by Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart
A really good study Bible - warning
The Bible is meant to be read/heard, understood/explained and applied/obeyed
Whatever you need to do to accomplish that process- do it.
Reading Correctly
Genres - different genre reads differently-History/Poetry, Law/Wisdom, Hebrew Narrative/Greek Narrative, Apocalyptic Literature.
different genre reads differently
Nature of Scripture - Divine/Human
History/Poetry, Law/Wisdom, Hebrew Narrative/Greek Narrative, Apocalyptic Literature.
Historical Context - Then and There
It is important for us to understand what it meant to them if we are to truly understand what it can mean for us. Primarily it was written to them even though it was written for everyone.

My Process

Different for different things

Personal Devotional time
Right now I use Book of Common Prayer
Bible
Journal (prayer and personal)
Study Time
Can coincide with personal devotional times
Studying a topic that God has placed on my heart
Going through a particular book of the Bible
Study to teach
Can coincide with the above times
I use it for those times because of the time committment
Full library of resources
Not only what does it say and what does it mean but how can I teach the truth to others
Lots of time and prayer
Sermon Prep
Think myself empty - write down everything that comes to mind
Read myself full - read as much as I can about that passage, reading the text over and over, any other direct parallel passages over and over, any research but not just now at all times.
Write myself clear - once it is in me, I start to write what I want to say and develop my message
Pray myself hot - throughout the process I am praying to make sure I am passionate about what I am teaching and that I am also empowered to teach it - I know what I can do, but changing a heart is God’s job, so I need the Holy Spirit to do what only He can do
Be yourself but don’t preach yourself - I can only be me, teach like me, preach like me, I can even use myself as an example, But I don’t want to point people towards me, I want to point them to God’s word and ultimately Jesus because that is where their hope is.
