Introduction
What is the ultimate purpose of being a Christian? Certainly, some might say to know God, which is true. Some might say to tell others about Jesus, which is an important responsibility of a Christian. Some might say go to church on Sundays. However, when all that is done at the end of your life…when Jesus Christ comes back to end human history and we enter into the New Heaven and the New Earth, the ultimate purpose for which we are saved for and for which we were created as human is to WORSHIP God.
Music was God’s idea.
Exposition
What is the ultimate purpose of being a Christian? Certainly, some might say to know God, which is true. Some might say to tell others about Jesus, which is an important responsibility of a Christian. Some might say go to church on Sundays. However, when all that is done at the end of your life…when Jesus Christ comes back to end human history and we enter into the New Heaven and the New Earth, the ultimate purpose for which we are saved for and for which we were created as human is to WORSHIP God.
What is the ultimate purpose of being human?
What does it mean to worship? Worship literally means “worth-ship.” In other words, it means ascribing WORTH to an object. It means giving praise, adoration and honour to the worthiness of the object Although worship seems to be a Christian jargon or word, the behaviour and expression of worship are practiced by everyone, including non-Christians. Non-Christians are guilty of worshipping other gods that is not the true God. That is called idolatry. It may not be gods in other religions, but it may be other objects, such as famous celebrity, money, a significant other...
How do you know if you’re worshipping an idol? Well, ask yourselves this question, “Do I spend a significant amount of time on this object? Do I have a deep affection for this object?” If this object disappears, went missing, or died, then would I be deeply grieved because you relied on this object to give you eternal joy and happiness that only God can give?
How do you know if you’re worshipping an idol? If it’s a celebrity pop star, video game, or fashion, then you may have to ask yourself, “Do you invest significant amount of
The Bible says that God alone is be worshipped because He is WORTHY of worship. , “For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.” God alone is WORTHY of worship because of His love, His greatness and His saving work.
Worship can be expressed in many elements, such as prayer, thanksgiving, reading of God’s Word, dancing, confession of sin, but one of the elements is through Singing And Music.
Have you ever wondered why Christians sing and play music? We sing and play music to express
Christians sing and play music to express our response, praise and gratitude to our Great God and Saviour. Music is God’s idea. The first human to ever make music was Adam. Adam sang to Eve in , “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” There are songs written in various places in the Bible. The longest book of the Bible is Psalm. The whole book of Psalm is actually a SONG.
What does it look like to worship? How can we know if we are worshipping either God or an idol? There may be two thing that could stir you towards worship: Time and Affection.
It was the Jewish people’s songbook. The book of Psalm is supposed to be sang.
Now, Psalm or worship music doesn’t always have to be about gratitude or happiness. When you read through Psalms, there are different types of songs. Of course, you have Psalms of praise and thanksgiving, Psalms of joy and celebration, Psalms of victory and deliverance, Psalms of lament and grieving…
Worship songs
In the Bible, music was used to relieve depression
With worship and music, we have multiple instruments that we could use to worship God: piano, violin, cello, organ, trumpet, trumbone, harp, guitar, bass guitar, drums, and keyboard. But, I think the main instrument in worship music that should dominate all instrument is THE VOICE.
Music was God’s idea
Singing is a command from the Lord. , “Let the word of Christ dwell in your richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” When we sing, we should and we must sing praise songs that accurately reflect the truth of the Bible.
Time, how much time to you spend?
Affection, does
For me, I prefer singing hymns
The song, “Come Behold The Wondrous Mystery,” is so filled with good theology and good doctrine. Verse 1 talks about the incarnation of Christ or the birth of Jesus. Verse 2 talks about the perfect and sinless life of Christ. Verse 3 talks about the death and atonement of Christ. Verse 4 talks about the resurrection of Christ.
The song, “Holy Holy Holy,” we sang and .
“How Great Is Our God” we sang the greatness of God from and .
Johann Sebastian Bach said, “All music should have no other end and aim than the glory of God and the soul’s refreshment; where this is not remembered there is no real music but only a devilish hub-bub.”
For instance, people get very excited and pumped up to see a famous celebrity star.
Conclusion
Consider this lesson on worship. What songs are you singing from your lips? I’m not saying singing secular music is bad, but if we want to worship our God on a daily basis, God has given us many songs to put in our mouth and lips to sing and declare His praise whether if we’re at home or at school or at work.
If you’re not a believer, then what song will you sing at the end of your life on your deathbed? For me, there are loads of hymns and spiritual songs for me to sing of the hope of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on my deathbed. Hopefully, at the end of your life you can sing of the grace and majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ who gave His life to save sinners.
