1. Today’s Bible verse

Matt
Matthew 9:36 ESV
36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

2. Emotions mentioned in

Compassion
distressed
helpless

Jesus had more positive emotions than negative one as recored in the NT.

The disciples saw ZEAL when he cast out demons. See
John 2:17 NASB95
17 His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for Your house will consume me.”
His zeal is a messianic fulfillment of
Psalm 69
Psalm 69:9 NASB95
9 For zeal for Your house has consumed me, And the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me.
ZEAL is a deep emotion
ZEAL (noun) - great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause or an objective.
Whatever Jesus felt He felt DEEPLY!

3. Definition of Hope.

Hope- The present enjoyment of a future blessing.

4. Name two positive emotions of Jesus.

GLADNESS - the celebration of continuing inner joy.
Gladness occurs when joy expresses itself on a particular occasion.
Example:
John 11:14–15 NASB95
14 So Jesus then said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, 15 and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe; but let us go to him.”
John
Jesus was GLAD of Lazarus death because when He brings him to life it will a demonstration of Jesus claim as messiah then as a result they will believed eliminating the disciples issue of lack of faith.
JOY - it characterizes the conduct of Jesus’ life.
Examples where Jesus experience JOY:
Luke 10:21 NASB95
21 At that very time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight.
Jesus also expressed JOY on the evening of the Lord’s Supper as He headed toward the cross.
John 15:11 NASB95
11 “These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.
It is unusual for Jesus to express joy in a situation where humans would express sorrow. He express joy as he about to be betrayed leading to His humiliation and eventually crucifixion.

5. How can we miss the mind of Christ in the experience of Joy?

By borrowing tomorrow’s hurt. - not understanding the events of the future. Had they understood that Christ death is the only way to bring about salvation then the outlook of His death would have been more welcomed and anticipated.

6. Can you remember a time when you borrowed tomorrow’s hurt?

When Ruth was diagnosed with developmental delays, I worried about her future what it will be like.

COMPASSION

Five instances when Jesus had compassion:

Jesus had compassion for THE MULTITUDE
Matthew 14:14 NASB95
14 When He went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and felt compassion for them and healed their sick.
Matthew 9:36 NASB95
36 Seeing the people, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.
Mark 8:2 NASB95
2 “I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.
Matthew
Large crows stirred Jesus’ pity. He saw the great need among people. (WHAT IS ONE GREAT NEED TODAY AMONG HUMANITY?)
Jesus had COMPASSION when He healed the leper.
Mark 1:41 NASB95
41 Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
Jesus had compassion when He encountered the funeral procession of a young man in Nain, He halted it. He felt compassion for the mother of the diseased who happened to also a widow.
Luke 7:13 NASB95
13 When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her, and said to her, “Do not weep.”
His heart was tender toward NEED and HURT.
His compassion DROVE Him to meet the need of healing and hurt.

7. Based on Jesus’ example, what are some reasons you can demonstrate the mind of Christ by showing compassion?

on similar cases where Jesus felt compassion, review what they were.

LOVE

The HIGHEST emotion of Jesus was love.
Examples where Jesus felt love for the individual:
a. When the rich young ruler came to Jesus.
Mark 10:21 NASB95
21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”
b. When Lazarus became sick.
John 11:3 NASB95
3 So the sisters sent word to Him, saying, “Lord, behold, he whom You love is sick.”
c. At the beginning of the Lord’s Supper.
John 13:1 NASB95
1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, Jesus knowing that His hour had come that He would depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
John
John 15:9 NASB95
9 “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.
d. John’s love
John 13:23 NASB95
23 There was reclining on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.
e. Jesus’s love
John 13:23
John 19:26 NASB95
26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”

8. Read about LOVE in page 233-234 and review ways you can show love. What for opportunities to show the Love of Christ.
