What is Common Grace?

“Undeserved blessings that God gives to all people, both believers and unbelievers.”
“The Grace of God by which he gives people innumerable blessings that are not part of salvation.”
Common - for all people, not just believers.
Grace - undeserved blessing
Distinct from saving grace.
Important: God does not have “two attributes” of grace; he IS gracious, and his grace manifests itself in two different ways.

What Makes Common Grace Significant?

, , - We deserve death/wrath
- God does not owe common grace to us.
He did not extend it to angels.
He removed it from Noah’s generation.

How is Common Grace Different from Saving Grace?

Distinct from saving grace.
Important: God does not have “two attributes” of grace; he IS gracious, and his grace manifests itself in two different ways.
The difference:
Results: CG does not bring about salvation; SG does
Recipients: CG is given to everyone; SG is only given to believers
Source: CG does not flow directly from the cross; SG does
CG indirectly from the cross? 1) The presence of believers as salt and light, and 2. God’s postponement of judgement to allow for salvation.

Examples of Common Grace

Pg. 274: “If we look at the world around us and contrast it with the fires of hell that the world deserves, we can immediately see abundant evidence of God’s common grace in thousands of examples in everyday life.”
Categories: physical, intellectual, moral, creative, societal, religious.

How is Common Grace Displayed in the Physical Realm?

Every breath: given by God’s grace.
Provision: the curse is not total ( - work and childbearing). The natural world often yields food, shelter, etc. (, , , ).
Beauty: the beauty of the natural world is an undeserved pleasure for both believers and unbelievers.

How is Common Grace Displayed in the Intellectual Realm?

People are not totally given over to the irrationality and lies caused by sin. They are enlightened by God’s creation (, , , ):
About God’s nature.
In order to distinguish between truth and error.
For productivity: pg. 275, 3rd paragraph (pg. 659, last paragraph for me)

How is Common Grace Displayed in the Moral Realm?

God intervenes by restraining human evil:
Through the conscience (, 32). [Do these verses point to the conscience as an act of God’s grace?] Also Luke 6:33.
Through human law ().
Through the consequences of sin that he has designed into the fiber of the natural world.

How is Common Grace Displayed in the Creative Realm?

Through the ability to produce beauty.
Through the ability to appreciate beauty.

How is Common Grace Displayed in the Societal Realm?
